Game 77: Minnesota at San Diego
Posted by ubelmann on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Slowey vs. Peavy
Going into the series, team leaders in VORP:
30.1 -- Adrian Gonzalez
18.5 -- Brian Giles
9.2 -- Jody Gerut
6.5 -- Edgar V Gonzalez
5,4 -- Kevin Kouzmanoff
22.4 -- Joe Mauer
19.8 -- Justin Morneau
7.7 -- Alexi Casilla
7.5 -- Jason Kubel
2.9 -- Nick Punto (this is not a typo)
I heard someone recently say that Adrian Gonzalez might be creeping into the NL MVP debate, but I don't see that. Adrian's had a good season so far, but Lance Berkman and Chipper Jones have just been out of their minds, and have something like a 20+ run lead in VORP so far.

Yesterday, there was a discussion about being 'green'.
There is a feature on the Twins Radio Network talking about the new ballpark. Todays feature had a pretty cool story. The ballpark will be designed to collect rainfall, and that gets filtered and they will use that for watering the landscaping outside and such.
The Nat's new ballpark is very, very green.
Laddie continues to deliver.
evening folks- Late ball game tonight, just in time for the Balvenie.
Meat, I can't drink for 6 months!
d'OH, Thats a travesty. Why, God, Why!?!
I'm gonna be on blood thinners because of frickin blood clots in my lungs. Blood thinners + drinking can't be a good thing.
I think I'll brew a couple of well aged lagers when I get the strength back to do it, so they'll be ready just in time for me.
man, thats the sh!ts. I don't know what else to say.
It was pretty awful, but I'm on the mend. Getting out of the hospital tommorrow. Luckily, Madison has Wi-Fi so I can still follow the gamecast.
Get well, man.
Luckily you have the WGOM - a balm in Gilead.
Here's hoping you're rockin' a morphine drip. Shame you need to be hospitalized to use one, though.
If you want one E-6 I know a dude who can 'hook' you up...
I was alternating between morphine and oxy-codone last night. That stuff works good, if I may say.
Luckily, I'm able to get by using Ibuprofen now, so I'm definitely heading towards recovery. Should be back to a relatively normal life by next week.
what was the cause if I may ask?
I'm not entirely sure. Apparently, it might be partly genetic, though those tests aren't in yet. The thinking amongst the doctors is that it may have been a combination of a lot of driving last weekend for my brother's wedding, dancing (which I almost never do), possibly hitting my leg on something and having it start there, then driving a long ways back home.
It was about a 6 hour drive from where I live to where the wedding was, plus there were 2 hour drives in between to my mom's house. So it's definitely possible that wherever it started, sitting in the car that much caused it to move into my lungs.
my thoughts are with ya mate, good to hear that you're on the mend.
Same here, pal.
ditto, cheaptoy. And if you need someone to clean out your homebrew inventory to remove the temptation....
Warfarin blues...
Jokes aside, best wishes, man.
Thanks, and I definitely tore through my deductible this week.
won't you get thirsty?
damn fancy word games.
My wife had to get tested for TB for one reason or another, and her mother was explaining to her, that if she was a carrier she would have to go through a treatment that wouldn't allow her to drink liqour for 9 months.
Mrs. Mak's brother was in the room and heard "no liquid for 9 months" and said something like "man, I couldn't do that, I'd get too thirsty". My mother-in-law asked "how often do you drink?" and he responded "every day". She was about to sit him down for a good talking to before they figured out the misunderstanding.
Needless to say, we were greatly amused.
I think that could rank up there as one of the funniest misunderstandings I've ever heard of.
by the way, wordplay aside, hope you feel better soon.
Dazzle uses 'carom'. Thought that was an exclusive Gordo meme.
probably picked it up through osmosis
Atta Boy, Cuddy.
Nice execution.
flash of the speed from cuddy there.
Just me, or was that a real slow catch-to-throw transfer by Barrett?
the Padres are terrible at trying to nab stealers
Well, I'll take one in the first if that's all we can manage. Laddie continues to impress, Cuddy does what he can with a tough full count breaking ball.
one in the hand worth two in the tank?
My criticism of Bremer for calling for a Cuddy steal a week ago is looking kind jerkish. (of course, this was a completely different situation)
Criticizing Dick always in order.
I just read ubelmann's intro. Nick Punto (and thus the team) has benefited from his limited playing time, it appears.
safe to say he's in line for the most improved VORP this year.
NBBW inquiring into u'man hireability.
Q: Could the hot stat blogomeister fit into a corporate underwriting underworld? Discuss amongst yourselves.
tick tick tick BOOM!
He might be wired a little tight for the gig. He's prolly overqualified, too.
Yeah. Solve this, pally.
Done.
Umm, O.K. how about...
dw: any chickanery lately? (NBBW asking)
last one I gave away was 6/13
Uh, oh. Gordo already sounding tired in the bottom of the 1st. This could get bad...
jetlag maybe?
Night game, shot poor on the back nine.
Does this AB qualify as no out pitch?
No Rhubarb tonight? I'll pinch hit.
Padres radio guys were talking up Gonzalez for MVP as ubelmann referenced, saying they'd put his numbers up against anyone's this year. They ignored Chipper and Berkman, and instead cited Ryan Howard and Pujols as guys having "down" years. I can't disagree that much on Howard, but it's beyond me how .347/.475/.631/1.105 is a "down" year. He's missed some time, I think, but other than that...
I guess he's hurt right now, as a matter of fact, but still, it's not like he's missed half or more of the season so far.
Gonzelez is the Padres only offensive threat. he's got that going for him
Yanquis get Shanghai'd by Pirates (12-5). Heh.
Mets continue the trend too, 11-0, at the hands of the M's. Thats a shame.
I've got the college world series on in the background. All I hear while hitting refresh on this page for new comments is *ping* *ping* *ping*...
They really need to get rid of metal bats and that awful sound at all levels.
Metal bats == Al Franken.
My brother-in-law from Anaheim is at the game tonight. Lucky stiff.
I'm just noticing how the road records of AL Central teams are all pretty similarly bad:
Chi 17-23
Min 15-20
Det 16-23
Cle 15-23
KC 18-24
Another nice inning for Slowey.

I have to say, that field at Petco is mighty pretty. Can't wait until we have real grass.
they only thing I do not like about the stadium is that stupid right field wall that sticks out
considering the naming rights of the park, they should have made the field look like my yard: some urine spots, and random thick green spots from dog fertilizer.
It's 10-15 in the bottom of the 7th in the CWS, they use metal bats, and this dude is up there bunting...
The way the ball flies off those things, he's probably trying to bunt for extra bases...
touche.
Peavy appears to be settling in. Not a good sign. We need to make him work, and he is at 49 pitches through three innings. We do seem to be taking patient at bats for the most part.
DazzL: "Mauer is the best catcher in the ML, well the AL at least..."
did someone leave the kool-aid out for dan?
someone forgot the arsenic for the kool-aid...
Nice work, Slowdog.
Gordo-Gladden discussing the architectural aspects of the SD ballpark...
John: Not real scenic.
Dazzle: I like it.
John: Yep.
is the radio crew bagging on PETCO park? I can't tell what they're talking about. Is there a ball game on?
Baseball is a storytellers sport.
It's like eavse-dropping on a couple of seniors at the food court.
you got that right. I'm not asking for much here, just tell me what happened on the field then tell me how I should buy my motorcycle from your good friends near my hometown.
LOL
Pitch count getting up there (56), but Slowey's looking good.

Cuddy 2-2.
Cuddle-bear!
Harris is pissed, but with two strikes you have to swing at that pitch. The black has been getting called all night.
it's an umpire's conspiracy against Harris for the whole timeout thing.
so mlb.tv comes on with its ad for the All-Star game, and it's Jeter, A-Rod, Giambi, and a couple other Yankees. And I'm thinking "oh sure, only Yankees can promote this" with severe eye-roll.
Then I realize it's in Yankee Stadium this year... crap. I guess I have to roll my eyes the other direction and take it back.
Mak its okay to be a hater.
I'm still generally PO'd about the invasion of commercials into the broadcasts this year. I always kinda liked the Pacman game between innings
I'm a bit pissed as well at the ads in front of the highlight reel on the main page of any ML team. WTF do I care about Aquos TVs I can barley afford the $14.95 radio package.
NHL.com still had the worst, it was a 30 second Verizon commercial just to get to the menu to choose the highlight to watch.
HEY BABY HEY BABY
YOURE THE BEST
was it that commercial?
Someone should tell Dazzle that Kouzmanoff's name sounds like Coors beer, not Cosmonaut
Rhymes with Guzman off?
+1
This is like seeing the second coming of Bradke. Me likey.
I'm going to channel New Guy and predict a productive AB for Slowey in this inning.
Bunt time.
