  • what??? No fireworks?

  • Good Morning Boss! Happy Independence from a fading monarchy Day!

Regarding the new look.... I like the overall format. It looks a bit more professional and seems simpler, or neater in style. My first reaction was "wow... sharp!" My one critique would be a need for more color. I know we are more than just a Twins blog, and I know all the Twins blogs are similar in the good ole Red, White and Blue slapped all over their homepages, but I am thinking just a little bit of highlighting around the edges.

By the way, I think the E-6 painting is freakin awesome and totally classes up the look. Have you thought of having that image anchor the look of the homepage??

    Overall, nicely done sir!

Yep, the picture is going to go in the header. By the way, he gave me the original and it is sitting in my office so that I can see it when I'm working on the WGOM.

The new look is a little different in that there isn't a main loop. Instead, I'm going to have highlights of each post and have people click through. The main tabbed window portion allows me to put a ton of stuff in that space without cluttering things up. You will see that the WGOM Headlines part is finished.

  • BTW ... Kelly T. has an interesting (and sure to be target material) take on the Twins success.

With all of the keys to success that did not happen this year (Liriano, Lamb, DeYoung, Neshek, etc.), I am having a hard time discounting her opinion too much.

    • The links in the comments are not colored, so click on "target material" to see the article I linked to.

I tell you what. I really think that the job of the manager, more than anything, is to show the leadership a club needs. If Gardy is lifting the chins in the clubhouse, that's doing his job. I know he wants guys to police themselves, but sometimes "clubhouse lawyers" end up "policing things" in ways that are not exactly in the best interest of the club. There's a former clubhouse lawyer playing in LA now and Gardy can do a little more shaping of his club with his loud mouth gone. So, I'll give Gardy credit for herding this crew in the right direction.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to have your starting pitching staff go out there and pitch well every single day.

      • The one thing that jumped out at me was Leyland's comments. "Gardenhire is the best"

I agree that Jim probably does not use the word "best" lightly. I have always thought Leyland as one of the best, so his opinion has me scratching my head a bit.

I have always been pretty hard on Gardy, and some of his moves are absolutely maddening, but when you back up and take a look at his body of work.... he's been pretty good. His lack of manager of the year awards are the result of things like: Giving Punto 500 at bats last year, ignorinng obvious platoon splits, letting Nathan rust on the bench in a tie game.

        • Lack of Manager of the Year awards has more to do with stuff not under his control. In 2003 and 2006, Tony Pena and Leyland orchestrated bigger turnarounds for their clubs, turning last-place teams into contenders. In 2002, the Angels had a terrible April record and then went on to win 99 games. In 2004, the Twins were expected to win the division. This year, Gardy will probably be 2nd to Joe Maddon of the Rays, unless they completely collapse in the second half.

      • Moss

Hell, even Moss has to concede that Gardy has done a good job with this crew. Moss' expectations were pretty low this season, and a lot of the individuals have not even lived up to Moss' low expectations (that would be you, Lamb, Cuddyer and Young). Yet the team is winning and contending. Gardy must be doing something right.

For Moss, it is the "prepared to play" point that davidwatts mentions. The times that are frustrating is when they appear to not be prepared -- the fielding mistakes, the times when they look collectively clueless against a crap pitcher, the dumb baserunning (and STILL, the LNP slides into first base) -- and there does seem to be a lower incidence of those moments lately.

Even if there is a second-half slide of some sort, the taste for winning will only pay dividends in the long run, much like how they competed but faltered in 2001 and then went on to three titles in a row. (Or in 1984 how the Twins competed and then, well, it took three years but they became baseball's WORLD CHAMPIONS!)

    • I was thinking about this during the Detroit series. The phrase you hear from other club officials and fans from around the league is 'The team is always prepared to play.' and 'They don't beat themselves very often'
Listening to Detroit throw the ball around like it was a gernade, and not taking extra bases on a gapper, stuff like that made me appriciate the local squad.
      I've been brainwashed

    The new look, I hope you are looking for constructive criticism. Here are 3 things that I feel are missing from the old layout;

1.) There is no date attached to the individual posts.

2.) The number of comments isn't listed in the WGOM Today section.

3.) I liked how the old layout put the news articles in the sidebar instead of mixing everything together.

Aside from that, as long as you don't change the site's content I won't have any issues with the look.

    • SBG

Thanks. The front page isn't done. I have the WGOM Headlines in a separate tab. The front page (WGOM Today tab) will not have posts like it has now. That's just there for the time being so that people can see what has actually been posted recently while I fix up the page.

  • E-6

A very amusing piece in The Onion spotlighting 21 "Patriotic" songs. The video to #6, Dennis Madalone's "America We Stand As One", has got to be seen to be believed.

    • I believe even laying the flag against the hillside behind you violates the unwritten tenant of not letting a flag touch the ground. But that song/video violates worse things than that.

  • A quick note/bug fix:

There are two links to the about page now. There is the one under the title bar and another one on the top bar of the main content area. The one in the main content area looks a bit screwed up when you click on it and have two of these seems a bit redundant. I'd consider gettering rid of the one in the main content area. Maybe you could replace it with something else like a "Recent Comments" tab.

  • Joe Borowski, DFA and thats not Doctor of Fine Arts

  • Huston Street with a 5-out save yesterday vs. the Chisox. I demand an investigation by the Competition Committee. Clearly, Bob Geren doesn't understand The Right Way to Play the Game©

  • It's the 4th of July and the only baseball on television here in Seattle is the afternoon Mariners game. Rrrgh.

  • I have the Yanks-Red Sox game on in the background as I catch up on some magazine reading (im about a month behind on Newsweeks and 2 issue back on Rolling Stones. jeesh!) and Michael Kay, YES's main man, has a case of the Dick Bremers. Every single medium deep fly ball, fair or foul, is a threat for a HR.

  • Food fight!!!!!

I love how it came down to a furter-foto-finish and they had to go to a "Sudden Chunks" playoff.

but what slays me is the quotes from the nutrition expert. Duh-uh.

  • Hey boss - new duds! I'm not one to shy from change, so I'm looking forward to when things get closer to completed. I'll second the need for color; might I suggest gray with pinstripes, and the word "MINNESOTA" in red? Always loved those visitor unis...

    Happy 4th, btw.

  • holy moses, look at this boxscore
