Cup of Coffee: July 9, 2008

It appears that the Wolves will get Utah's number one pick next year in their deal with Philadelphia, not the 76ers. I would imagine that Utah will be a better team than Philly in 2008-09. But, yep, the 76ers got a whole lot better, in part because of the Timberwolves. Maybe the four picks that the Wolves have next year can be parlayed into something good. For a team that has never done much (outside of one HUGE exception) on draft day, this'll be a chance to remake the club.

  • I think McFail's goal is to corner the entire first round next year.

Okay, can you imagine how happy Twins' management in the 80's would have been if they'd had Nathan instead of Ron Davis?! You can bet he wouldn't have sat much then!

  • Well, I wrote my schedule for the rest of the month and somehow was able to set up a weeks vacation. With no travel plans, I have a list of things to accomplish during this down time:

    1) Catch up on much neglected yard work/home improvements.
    2) Play a few rounds of golf and work on the swing.
    3) Finally catch a Twins Game - Sunday the 20th against the Rangers is the only possibility.
    4) Come off my hiatus from WGOM. I am going to try to knock off a few wine reviews and possibly a movie review.

SBG - for the "about us" section - Do you just want a blurb emailed to you?

I can't believe that summer is pretty much halfway gone. The months and years seem to fly by more quickly the older I get. Good Grief!

Yeah, you can e-mail me something or just leave your "bio" as is. Your choice. I kind of like the fake bios.

      • I will pick choice "b". I will keep the ubelmann-like veil of mystery for a while.

Also, for the wine column... I just ordered 3 bottles of white wine from Montelle Winery in Missouri. I purchased the Seyval and River Vally White per Rhubarb Runner's recommendation. I also ordered their 2006 Chardonel.

I thought I would tweak my format a bit and put a couple wines in the ring together and see which one comes out on top.

So... "Ladies and Gentlemen, in this corner, we have the young upstart Seyval varietal hailing from Montelle Winery in Missouri. A French-American hybrid grape winning fans throughout the midwest. And in this corner, we have the grizzled veteran Vouvray (Chenin-Blanc Grape) hailing from Chateau-Montfort in the Loire Valley of France"

"The Ring" in this battle will be my world famous buttercrumb walleye dinner. Both wines should pair well with this fish dish. My recipe uses Ritz Crackers for the breading of the fish, and I top it with an almond butter that is to die for. Mrs. zooomx has offered to be an associate judge for the fight.

Both wines weigh in at about $12-$15 a bottle, so it is a fair fight right? We just added the Vouvray onto my restaurants wine list and I thought it was a very solid white, especially for the price.

It will be the end of next week before I post the results, so feel free to go online, as both wines are available and reasonable priced. I would be interested in hearing other's opinions of both wines.

I have dumped the top 50 Citizens list from the sidebar in an effort to speed things up. The site is chewing up about double the bandwidth that it did before the change, which isn't a whole lot (700 MB/day), but it seems to be enough to slow things down to an unacceptable level. I don't know when I'll be able to address some of the problems, but I'll try to do so relatively soon.

I'm wondering if the T-Wolves trade yesterday means that they will NOT sign Bassy Telfair. The salary cap was announced at just over $58 million next year. The Wolves are at $50.7 million without the two guys they just took on. They have to sign Kevin Love, that's about $3 million. They have those two guys, that's $2.7 million. That puts the Wolves at about $56.4 million. Then, they have qualifying offers to Gomes, Craig Smith, and Chris Richard. That'll put them over the cap and into the mid level exception. I just don't see how they bring back Bassy. So, who's their backup point guard (after Randy Foye)? Could have been Mario Chalmers, right?

    • So, who's their backup point guard (after Randy Foye)?

That leads me to ask who is their starting PG because I just don't see the ability in Foye to be a starting PG. This team has zero legit PG options on the roster right now.

Neyer on that A's-Cubs trade that landed Dan Haren in Chicago:

In fact -- and I'm surprised that I'm writing this -- the A's might be better right now than they were yesterday. Beane's giving up on 2008? Nah. He's just retooling for the stretch run.

    • That was Rich Harden in Chicago, right?

    • what was the gist of his argument leading to that conclusion?

There is no way that Gallagher and (fill in blank in callups from the River Cats) will match Harden + Gaudin this year. Murton could contribute, or he could spend most of the season in Sacramento. Patterson is nothing more than a AAAA infield depth guy, and Donaldson is a long ways away (struggling at the plate in Single A).

So I don't see how this makes Oakland better now (or next year, or the next, frankly).

      • There is no way that Gallagher and (fill in blank in callups from the River Cats) will match Harden + Gaudin this year.

Even if Harden goes on the Harden...er...Disabled List?

Gallagher has control problems (much like Gio Gonzalez), so I'm not sure how much I like him as a prospect, but Harden had troubles staying healthy (he must be getting more expensive soon, too, so there's the opportunity cost of locking up those dollars) and Gaudin's good, but a 4.15 xFIP isn't irreplaceable.

I don't know that I especially think this is a great idea for the A's, but I haven't looked at everyone involved all that closely, either.

        • Even if Harden goes on the Harden...er...Disabled List?

          ok, there's that way Smile

but Gaudin still is about as good as Gallagher (if not better) at this point. So I think my claim would withstand another Harden Vacation.

  • Interesting fact: Paul Erdos refused to believe you should switch doors in the Monty Hall problem. (From the book "The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules our Lives")

Greekhouse, are you sure you want to be linked to this guy?

    • In his defense, it depends on the hypotheses of the problem. If you assume Monty Hall will always open a door with no prize, you should switch. If you assume that sometimes he'll open the door with the prize, it doesn't matter what you do.

    • I love the Monty Hall problem. It's like an optical illusion. Even if you know what you're supposed to see, it's still hard for your eyes to send the right signals to your brain.

  • someone should make a t-shirt

"I survived the great WGOM redesign
and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"

  • For some reason these last couple of Twins games have me hearing a John Prine song over and over in my head.

That's the way that the world goes 'round
You're up one day, the next you're down
It's a half an inch of water, you think you're gonna drown
That's the way that the world goes 'round

  • This is your new office correspondent New Guy reporting live, embedded within the ranks of the cubicle army.

It's a sad day, folks. I hate office jobs. At least it's a day game today so I have something to distract me while I get used to fooling around with spreadsheets and databases again.

  • PAGING ALGONAD:

Iowa has a new hockey team - The Chops. They are in the same division as the Chicago Wolves, and as I remember your buddy works for the Wolves, right? You should see if they play in DSM the same weekend as a Drake game. Just a thought.

    • Thanks for the head's up. That's a done deal.

We're also planning on Relays this year. Two DM trips within 3 months! And I'm planning spring break in StL for the MVC tourney. I really hope the team is at least average this year.

  • jerry zgoda with the details on the Wolves' trade:

That first-round pick from Utah by way of the Sixers is top 22 protected in 2009, top 17 in 2010, top 15 in 2011 and the top 16 in 2012 and 2013.

The Sixers also gave the Wolves some cash money and a 2010 second-round choice the Wolves threw into the deal gets paid only if the Wolves are selecting 55 through 60 that year. That means they’d have to be one of the league’s six best teams just two seasons hence.

Good lord! "Top 22 protected"?? "top 17 protected"??

I withdraw my approval. McHale paid $2.8 million to get what will almost certainly be a junk pick, plus Carney and a cadaver. All this when he could have just kept Chalmers, who likely will be as good or better than whatever that draft pick eventually yields. In full context, this is a mediocre deal at best. I hope he at least got the pictures back from Philly's GM, plus mebbe an autographed Elton Brand jersey.

I think it's fixed. I had put an "if" loop, looking for a specific category in the comments code and it was querying the database 25 times a second. I had a total of 2.1 million database queries in 12 hours. Let's see how this goes.

    • I had a total of 2.1 million database queries in 12 hours
I knew your site your site was popular, but wow!

What was happening is that every time a comment got printed, every comment in a post, it was a query. So, when you refreshed the post at 300 comments, bang, 300 queries. There were 50 people doing that pretty much all day. Mayhem.

        • SBG

Plus, today was a heavy day. We've had almost 7000 page views in the last 24 hours.

            its a superdelaic freakout!!!! LOL

7000 views...sweet! I hope some of the visitors stick around and join the fun!

  • Have we discussed the Crasnick column yet? quoting an unnamed "front office executive whose team recently faced Minnesota":

I'd be very surprised to see the Twins hang in there for a playoff run,'' the official said. "They basically have two very good position players, a great closer, and a bunch of complementary role players. There is no way they can continue to hit even close to [.317] with runners in scoring position, which will make it hard for them to score runs. And without scoring runs, it's hard to win with a staff of No. 4 and 5 starters.

A staff of No. 4 and 5 starters? That's a bit harsh, I think. Baker and Slowey look to be above-average starters and Blackburn about average (well, so far anyway). How many ML teams have 4th and 5th starters who are above league average overall? Otherwise, a fair assessment.

According to BP, the Twins currently (before today?) rank 8th in both hitter VORP and pitcher VORP in the AL, but a nasty 13th (26th in the Majors) in Defensive Efficiency. Good lord! So defense is the real problem? Bring back the Cuban Dictators!!!!

    • quoting an unnamed "front office executive whose team recently faced Minnesota":

I wonder who that was? Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, San Diego, Arizona, Washington?

    • I'd say the Crasnick article was surprisingly well done. I bet the GM who said it was the putz in Washington. Even if he's right, which he basically is, the guy would probably give his right nut to enjoy the success the Twins have had this decade.

  • The Royals better hang on for the win tonight
they are up 6-5 in the eigth. apparently, Joakim Soria is unavailable tonight after a heavy workload this week

  • I hate the Sox. Red, White, it don't matter. I hate 'em all.
