According to BP, the Twins currently (before today?) rank 8th in both hitter VORP and pitcher VORP in the AL, but a nasty 13th (26th in the Majors) in Defensive Efficiency. Good lord! So defense is the real problem? Bring back the Cuban Dictators!!!!

All this when he could have just kept Chalmers, who likely will be as good or better than whatever that draft pick eventually yields. In full context, this is a mediocre deal at best. I hope he at least got the pictures back from Philly's GM, plus mebbe an autographed Elton Brand jersey.

but Gaudin still is about as good as Gallagher (if not better) at this point. So I think my claim would withstand another Harden Vacation.

Gallagher has control problems (much like Gio Gonzalez), so I'm not sure how much I like him as a prospect, but Harden had troubles staying healthy (he must be getting more expensive soon, too, so there's the opportunity cost of locking up those dollars) and Gaudin's good, but a 4.15 xFIP isn't irreplaceable.

I don't know that I especially think this is a great idea for the A's, but I haven't looked at everyone involved all that closely, either.

There is no way that Gallagher and (fill in blank in callups from the River Cats) will match Harden + Gaudin this year. Murton could contribute, or he could spend most of the season in Sacramento. Patterson is nothing more than a AAAA infield depth guy, and Donaldson is a long ways away (struggling at the plate in Single A).

So I don't see how this makes Oakland better now (or next year, or the next, frankly).
