I'd say the Crasnick article was surprisingly well done. I bet the GM who said it was the putz in Washington. Even if he's right, which he basically is, the guy would probably give his right nut to enjoy the success the Twins have had this decade.

they are up 6-5 in the eigth. apparently, Joakim Soria is unavailable tonight after a heavy workload this week

Thanks for the head's up. That's a done deal.

We're also planning on Relays this year. Two DM trips within 3 months! And I'm planning spring break in StL for the MVC tourney. I really hope the team is at least average this year.

Have we discussed the Crasnick column yet? quoting an unnamed "front office executive whose team recently faced Minnesota":
I'd be very surprised to see the Twins hang in there for a playoff run,'' the official said. "They basically have two very good position players, a great closer, and a bunch of complementary role players. There is no way they can continue to hit even close to [.317] with runners in scoring position, which will make it hard for them to score runs. And without scoring runs, it's hard to win with a staff of No. 4 and 5 starters.

A staff of No. 4 and 5 starters? That's a bit harsh, I think. Baker and Slowey look to be above-average starters and Blackburn about average (well, so far anyway). How many ML teams have 4th and 5th starters who are above league average overall? Otherwise, a fair assessment.

According to BP, the Twins currently (before today?) rank 8th in both hitter VORP and pitcher VORP in the AL, but a nasty 13th (26th in the Majors) in Defensive Efficiency. Good lord! So defense is the real problem? Bring back the Cuban Dictators!!!!

I think it's fixed. I had put an "if" loop, looking for a specific category in the comments code and it was querying the database 25 times a second. I had a total of 2.1 million database queries in 12 hours. Let's see how this goes.

jerry zgoda with the details on the Wolves' trade:
That first-round pick from Utah by way of the Sixers is top 22 protected in 2009, top 17 in 2010, top 15 in 2011 and the top 16 in 2012 and 2013.

The Sixers also gave the Wolves some cash money and a 2010 second-round choice the Wolves threw into the deal gets paid only if the Wolves are selecting 55 through 60 that year. That means they’d have to be one of the league’s six best teams just two seasons hence.

Good lord! "Top 22 protected"?? "top 17 protected"??

I withdraw my approval. McHale paid $2.8 million to get what will almost certainly be a junk pick, plus Carney and a cadaver. All this when he could have just kept Chalmers, who likely will be as good or better than whatever that draft pick eventually yields. In full context, this is a mediocre deal at best. I hope he at least got the pictures back from Philly's GM, plus mebbe an autographed Elton Brand jersey.

PAGING ALGONAD:

Iowa has a new hockey team - The Chops. They are in the same division as the Chicago Wolves, and as I remember your buddy works for the Wolves, right? You should see if they play in DSM the same weekend as a Drake game. Just a thought.

Even if Harden goes on the Harden...er...Disabled List?

ok, there's that way :-)

but Gaudin still is about as good as Gallagher (if not better) at this point. So I think my claim would withstand another Harden Vacation.

There is no way that Gallagher and (fill in blank in callups from the River Cats) will match Harden + Gaudin this year.

Even if Harden goes on the Harden...er...Disabled List?

Gallagher has control problems (much like Gio Gonzalez), so I'm not sure how much I like him as a prospect, but Harden had troubles staying healthy (he must be getting more expensive soon, too, so there's the opportunity cost of locking up those dollars) and Gaudin's good, but a 4.15 xFIP isn't irreplaceable.

I don't know that I especially think this is a great idea for the A's, but I haven't looked at everyone involved all that closely, either.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Not the guy I want on the hill when trying to salvage the last game of a lost series against the Beantown lineup. I'm hoping Livan will fool me again, but of course, that's just a fool's hope.

what was the gist of his argument leading to that conclusion?

There is no way that Gallagher and (fill in blank in callups from the River Cats) will match Harden + Gaudin this year. Murton could contribute, or he could spend most of the season in Sacramento. Patterson is nothing more than a AAAA infield depth guy, and Donaldson is a long ways away (struggling at the plate in Single A).

So I don't see how this makes Oakland better now (or next year, or the next, frankly).

It's a sad day, folks. I hate office jobs. At least it's a day game today so I have something to distract me while I get used to fooling around with spreadsheets and databases again.

For some reason these last couple of Twins games have me hearing a John Prine song over and over in my head.

That's the way that the world goes 'round
You're up one day, the next you're down
It's a half an inch of water, you think you're gonna drown
That's the way that the world goes 'round

Bandwidth isn't the best indicator for your problem - with the 500 errors, it's most likely too many concurrent MySQL queries. Does Dreamhost have any indicators in their control panel for memory/cpu usage and MySQL errors? I'd look for that stuff rather than bandwidth. That's where the cheap hosts get you - they offer tons of storage and bandwidth, but not enough actual system performance where you can actually utilize that much of it.

In his defense, it depends on the hypotheses of the problem. If you assume Monty Hall will always open a door with no prize, you should switch. If you assume that sometimes he'll open the door with the prize, it doesn't matter what you do.
