I can just feel the excitement around here.
Everyone left after another frickin bunt.
stuck at work today for the majority of the afternoon. Fortunately no one else is here, so mlb.tv is allowed.
I'm around as well. Just for fun, I'll predict a GWRBI for Mike Lamb
I would like to play this game as well. I am thinking a prediction of a bunt single for Go Go
I'll go with a Buscher HR.
I'm going with a prediction of Denard Span's first HR.
your predictions seem more fun.
I'm just feeling good on a fantastic July day.
Verlander doesn't seem interested in enabling any of those predictions so far.
Seems like he's getting some nasty stuff called inside - yikes.
Looks like Morneau will be in the derby
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080713&content_id=3127636&vkey=allstar2008&fext=.jsp
lets hope that he doesnt go into a HR funk like he did last year after the derby.
I heard that, and I was kind of surprised because Morneau seemed to (at least in his own mind) blame the derby for messing up his swing last year in the 2nd half.
Also, this year he's hit about half as many HR as last year at this point, hopefully he doesn't have to make too many major adjustments for the derby.
My lord, terrible call
awful call
Was Thames out at first? I am watching on Gamecast.
Morneau had to stretch into foul territory for Buscher's throw, while he adjusted his foot came off the base, but it was definitely back on the base when he caught the throw.
Time for a double play
Dick and Bert are right - that was a horrible call! How could the ump miss that?
And the Tigers get a free run off of it! For pete's sake!
Tigers 1, Umpires 1, Twins 0
These umps owe us a run now.
Ok, I gotta ask. What was the bad call?
They said the throw pulled Morneau off the base when his foot was clearly on it.
Luke Hughes is batting the the Future's game on ESPN 2 now.
That would have been a perfect time for a makeup call.
We'll get the make-up call sometime when it doesn't matter. /bitter
Jim Wolf is the evil umpire.
Add him to the list. Runge, Hernandez, Reliford, Bucknor, West....
I think when we hit a ball just to the right of the foul pole will be a good tme for that makeup.
Morning folks.
hey everybody! it's meat!
So the Twins aren't making Verlander work very hard today.
Meat- Heading over to the Taste of Buffalo in an about 1/2 hour.
Man, that just makes me salivate. Have some chiavetta's for me.
You betcha. I will not be making the mistake of eating an "Elephant Sub" again this year. Though I do plan on enjoying some Lance Diamond.
Oh boy. I thought he'd be dead by now. Is the Elmwood still open, I would have thought that the health department would have shut the doors on that place.
Lance is alive and the Elmwood Lounge is still open. He is actually working with a friend of mine attempting to put together an album of original material. So far, all reports are hilarious.
Let me know when that comes out. I have a few friends who need that for christmas.
You know that he has a Christmas , right?

Verlander with 4K the first time through the order
Ugh...Gomez watching two meaty fastballs. I smell a strikeout coming
My boy David "Raptor" Benefield is one of the chip leaders going into Day 6 of the WSOP ME.
http://www.pokernews.com/live-reporting/2008-world-series-of-poker/main-event/chip-counts/day6/
A close personal friend, Greekhouse? You ever have designs on playing the WSOP?
I once thought that I could do well in the WSOP because I dominated on Pokerstars.net. Then I realized that the other people playing for free on that site were morons, like most of the internet.
Yeah, the play money players are absolutely awful. They don't think, they just call. There is plenty of money to be made in the low stakes real money games, but you have to know what you're doing. Most people assume their good without actually having a good reason for believing it. If you learn basic skills, that's good enough to beat many of the games online (although live games are typically much softer).
Hmm, if I had even a little bit of spare change I'd think about giving it a shot. I haven't played a whole lot since college, so I'd probably be a bit rusty.
Not a close friend, more of an acquaintance. I hung out with him a bunch and stayed in his room for a night when I was in Vegas a few years ago.
If I can continue to dominate online poker the way I have been for the past few months and can get myself into a good financial situation while moving up in stake, I might consider playing in an event someday. Right now though, I'd much rather have $10k than an entry to the ME.
Were I Dick or Bert, I would refer to the Thames play at first as the Jim Wolf error every time it's mentioned. Nothing like giving a team an extra run.
Alright Lexi, now lets see some M's do some things.
COME ON KUBES!!!!
Random fact:
That was Justin Morneau's 100th plate appearance with a runner on first.
He's driven that runner in 10 times. Only Craig Monroe has a higher percentage on the Twins (4 of 31).
Was that payback? Was Morneau out on the play?
I think he was safe, but it was a really tough angle and I think most umpires would have given the fielder the benefit of the doubt.
I think he was safe, but it was close.
That first pitch was get me over fastball I wish Kubel would have turned on.
This would be nice.
Our best friend, a Mr. W. Pitch just entered the stadium.
They didn't even need our second best friend, Mr. Productive Out to tie.
awesome. now a hit.
Pretty good PA for the Dude there.
Heh heh heh, The Dude walks.
Jason Kubel has driven in 24 of the 107 runners in scoring position in his at-bats this year (not counting intentional walks). His 23% success rate is last on the active roster (Everett [20%] and Tolbert [15%] are the only hitters lower this season).
Somebody's been hitting the stats this afternoon ...
like i said, I'm alone at work...
Harris!
Right on squinty!
Nicely stroked, Harry. 5 RBI in 2 days so far.
YUSS!
Alright folks, I have a street festival to attend. take care, go Twins.
Afternoon, folks
nibbs, yo.
And what is your avatar, BTW?
A miniboss from the old game 'Descent'. I liked the game, and at the time, it was the only smallish/squarish pic I had on the work computer. Might get changed sometime, might not.
Yeah, I remember Descent. I just never played very far into it. Seems like the vehicular 3D omnidirectional navigation FPS genre never really caught on.
Well, Descent especially tended to give people motion discomfort, hard to sell people on that sort of thing.
Salutations, nibbish.
How's the game been going thus far?
I'm out for the rest of the game, if the twins do indeed sweep here is the broom.

have a good one.
Have a good one, meat
Gardy inexplicably brought in Bass, so it doesn't look like we'll need it.
Terrible route my Gomez. Man, he needs a couple of years of seasoning yet
I don't know that he would have had a play at 2nd even if he played it on the first hop.
Doesn't change the fact that it was a bad route, but I don't think it hurt us in this particular instance.
Not disagreeing, but that ball had some wicked slice on it going away from center.
Yeah, it seemed like he had a reasonable chance of catching it for a while there. I'm not going to blame him for that happening every once in a while. He gets to so many balls that nobody else in the league comes close to.
Nice defusation(?) of that threat by Blackburn
Blackie looking okay today. No complaints.
Wow. Comparing Gomez to Granderson is an insult
Hey foks. Folks are gone, the girls of the house are sleeping. One more win before the break would be nice.
I think if we work the count this next inning we've got a good chance of making that hope a reality.
Damn Polanco
Nice hustle there by Miguel Cabrera.
Harris in a double play situation is always "that close" it seems like.
Well, in his defense, that would've been quite a double play, but I agree... I like Harris a LOT better at third than at short (where he moves like a battleship in a desert).
right, you can't expect the diving stop up the middle to get turned. But the one before that, just a little bit quicker turn and it could have been. And again, its not that he was noticeably slow, but it seems to always be a lot closer play at first with him out there.
Holy cow, that was a close inning. I'm glad we got out of it with only one run allowed.
I know it's a cliche, but this ump might well need corrective lenses.
Bad calls are the order of the day today, I'm afraid.
Okay, time for that GWRBI
Aww man, another fifteen feet
He's set up for a 9th inning AB with runners on, though.
Or that first HR.
If this ends up a 3-2 loss, I'm going to be doing some serious statfreakin' over here.
Verlander's at 108 pitches now. Wish we could have got him there an inning sooner.
Kubel has made a couple nice catches in LF today, one going back to the track, and that one with a long run into foul ground.
Compared to Delmon he looks rather fleet of foot.
According to Detroit's announcers, he (Kubel) feels more comfortable as a DH, and feels uncomfortable in the OF.
He's like the anti-Shannon Stewart (or the anti-Insanity)
Good game by Blackburn. Stayed cool through mistakes, prevented a big inning.
Blackburn solid as usual. C'mon offense, let's get him one of the overrated 'wins'.
Nice outing for Blackie today. Too bad Jim Wolf is an idiot.
Another day of out-making for Carlos McSlumpy
But Gardy says he has no intention of moving him out of the leadoff slot because he's afraid that would mess with his head. Gardy, his head's a mess already. Do the kid a favor, move him to the 9 hole and take the frigging pressure off him.
Coincidence that the only inning we had a runner on for Mauer/Morneau/Kubel is the only inning we've scored?
Who else just had a flashback to 2006 with Morneau coming up against Zumaya.
Alas, he gets intentionally walked.
That is exactly what crossed my mind, though.
a strategic wild pitch to set up the intentional BB?
We need some serious abiding here, Dude.
I'll say it again, COME ON KUBES!!!!!
Hey, Boss, looks like we lost the edit feature for comments. How am I gonna cover up my mistakes now?
I think I still have it on mine?
I'm still seeing it.
Not there for me. I logged out, cleared cookies and cache, logged back in, still not there. Ah well, guess I'll just have to appear fallible for awhile.
What. the. hell.
BASS??
Guess Gardy's ready for vacation.
OK, I maybe get that against the right handed batter - but why not bring in Breslow or Reyes against the lefty with power? Ugh.
Well, you know, Gardy has to make sure he has pitchers available for after the all-start break.
Brian Bass SUCKS.
Bass in the eighth
+1 Rotting fish
Bass needs to put through waivers and sent to AAA. If he's claimed, no big loss. Boof can do long relief and mop up. Having Bass there is just a temptation for Gardy that needs to be removed, like Tyner getting dumped so Gardy couldn't DH him anymore.
Bass has passed Rincon now for "most outings with a negative WPA" this season.
Bass - 14 (of 35)
Rincon - 13 (of 24)
Crain - 12 (of 38)
Reyes - 12 (of 43)
Livan - 11 (of 20)
Boof - 11 (of 23)
Thanks for putting this one a little further out of reach, Mr. Bass.
Anyone just have a flashback to last week?
hope (n.) - Todd Jones is warming in the Tiger's bullpen.
+1 Websters New Edition
Of the 25 people on the roster, Bass might be 24th on the list of players I wanted to see pitching the 8th inning of this game. (Punto is seemingly hurt, after all)
Well, Nathan DID just pitch 3 straight days. Crain and Cheese both have gotten a lot of work too. Limited options.
The fact that Todd "I have a 9.00 ERA" Jones has the same number of saves as Rick Aguilera is a modern day travesty.
Boo - no offense, a horrible call and a bad bullpen decision. Well, at least we took 3 of 4.
This is why no one picked the 4-game sweep in SBG's poll at the beginning of the series.
The WGOM citizenry, smarter than your average commenters.
Add to that Verlander being on today.
Twins with 5 total bases today, that's their fewest since Gavin Floyd nearly no-hit them on May 6.
I just got home to see the 2nd and 3rd out of the 9th inning
:(
3 out of 4 heading into the break is not too shabby
Go Rangers!
Yup, they just tied it up 4-4.
Hamilton 0-2, 0 RBI so far. I was hoping for a 5 RBI day from him to go into the break at an even 100. (Also that would mean Sox pitching was getting destroyed)
5-4 Sox now
looks like its going to be a good ol fashoned 14-12 final
geesh, I turn away for 5 minutes, and its now 7-5 Rangers top of the 4th
Sox looking to score more
An insane end to that game. Sox produce 3 runs in the top of the ninth, have runners on, but Konerko strikes out after four hours of baseball. Rangers win 12-11.
Just 1 1/2 games back at the break is real good. The years the Twins didn't win the division under Gardy the Twins were 8 (2007) and 9 (2005) games back. Only once (2002) have the Twins been in first place at the break under Gardy. The Twins are 11 games over .500, which is tied for the best record under Gardy (also 2002). Surprisingly, the Twins were still only 9 games over .500 at the break and 11 games back in 2006.
The last time the Twins were in this good of position and didn't win the division was 2001 when they had a five-game lead at the break before going into a big tailspin right after the break. Since divisional play began, the Twins have been in this good of position or better and didn't win the division just three times (2001, 1992, 1984). The Twins have been in worse position at the break and won the division twice (2006, 2003). So, since divisional play began, the Twins have been in this position or better at the break nine times and won the division six times.
Good research. I'm sure the dynamics there are pretty idiosyncratic, but that clearly indicates that we're in surprisingly good shape.
ESPN's standings have Twins at a 38.8% odds of making the playoffs.
that's nice.
BP's PECOTA-adjusted odds for the Twins are at a mighty slim 19.6 pct.

hrm. sorry about that. suddenly I am powerless to self-edit.
powerless to self-edit Emasculation. Like losing your own K. Rove.
