Cup of Coffee: July 17, 2008

Happy Birthday to the WGOM! It's been four years since I started what has become this site. Back then, I was studying for the Minnesota Bar Exam. This site was started as an excuse to not study. Let me assure you, if you haven't done it, that the whole bar exam process is just about the most unfriendly process I've ever been through. The site has made it through four years and multiple design changes. I am appreciative of all of you who have participated to make it truly a lot of fun. Thank you!

If you are someone who posts on this site, including WGOM Headlines and WGOM Videos, make sure you read the upgrade to 2.6 posting that I put up this morning.
WGOM is one of the few sites that remains a daily read for me. Thanks for all the work you put into it, SBG. I like the new look too.
Happy Birthday WGOM. You look great for your age!
Many happy returns, WGOM!
I learned to juggle during college finals week; a healthy distraction (in moderation) is almost a necessity to maintain your sanity in those situations.
I learned how to solve a Rubik's Cube during finals.
I learned to juggle right at the beginning of my first year.
I'm raising my cup (coffee) right now to the WGOM!
I got my golf handicap down to an 8 while I studied for the bar exam. Then I had kids and I'm way, way, way up there again.
4 years? Whoo doggie, it doesn't seem like that long at all. That was the summer after my freshman year. I started my (now defunct) blog that same summer. Congrats on the success.
It was about the same time I started my blog too. I remember it back then...it was pink and didn't display properly in firefox.
It was supposed to be sepia.
Yesterday saw a huge tech upgrade at the slaughter house (aka the meat household). We bought a new mac keyboard, a wireless router and a laser printer. We bought a brother HL 2140, small, b&w and really cheap (thanks for all the suggestions I wanted to go with either the brother 5240 or the hp banjo recommended but the price was right and it fits out needs pretty well). I feel like a
20th21st century man.more like
congrat meat! (slaughter house...I laughed at that)
I've been on a technology buying spree lately as well. I'm getting ready for my move in a few months, so I got a new laptop and external HD. My current laptop I've had since freshman year. It's still plugging along, but I don't want to be an ocean away if it decides to give up the ghost. I'm going to sell it to my little brother. The external HD I've been meaning to get for awhile now. I need to backup all my pictures, and they are kinda large when shooting with my dSLR.
I've put all my music, genealogy data, etc. on a 120GB Passport that I picked up for $69 last November; it works great, and now I can port my listening between work and home PCs with no problem. Again, pricewatch is the place to shop for them.
Well, this calls for cake.

I like this picture. It took a little snooping, but I found it. (Chocolate cake): from a portfolio. "Seven still lifes and a rabbit" by Wayne Thiebaud. I'll have to have a look at more of his work.
Happy birthday!
Ditto. Thanks for saving me from the STRIB comment sections and giving me an outlet for my burning need to be heard (despite my being too lazy to run my own site). Thanks for making this an on-going community of interest.
Thanks as well to ubelmann for stepping up to the plate so many times to keep the baseball content flowing when the Boss shifted more and more into Bill Gates mode.
Thanks to Rhu_Ru, Andrew, zooomx, AMR, Big Mak, Banjo, GreekHouse, E-6, FW, etc., for ponying up so much additional, quality content, which has made the WGOM not just the WGO Twins blog, but the WGOM.
Funny you should mention the Bill Gates mode. I've been providing precious little content these days (I know, content is King), but in truth, I've been working very hard on the site. The tags thing will eventually get done -- the idea being that people who come to this site should understand context. By linking old material to new, one can see that. So, when ubelmann writes something and you are new, you can see where his line of thinking is. I'm also working on "author pages" for everyone who registers. They are far from done, but when done should provide a nice little piece to the whole magazine. I don't know how much use that will get, but it is FUN for me. Plus, I'm trying to figure out how to make the damned thing run faster. I'll get it, eventually, but right now, I'm frustrated by the errors that come up.
Finally, I hope to write about the Twins more. It's been a long time since I have done that. Those of you new to the site might be surprised to hear that I used to write quite about the Twins on a regular basis. I hope to return to at least a semi-regular schedule, but I know now not to promise too much.
I look forward to year five of this thing. I'm proud of this site. I hope you all enjoy it.
By the way, one little feature I added recently is the number of posts an author has made on the site at the bottom of each post. Look above, you'll see it. I'm at 2150 something, which doesn't count the 900+ posts that I made prior to switching to Wordpress. Yep, I've posted over 3000 times on this site.
~3000/(4*365) ~= 2 per day. Holy cr@p, bossman.
I never suggested that Bill had stopped working
Oh, I know. I've taken on a different role. I really see the site as less of a sounding board for me and more of a group place. I have focused on working on making it easier and more pleasing to use, with mixed results. I am now looking at AJAXed posts and comments! That might go a long way to eliminating the server problems. We'll see.
I look forward to year five of this thing. I'm proud of this site. I hope you all enjoy it.
The WGOM has been a near daily read for me during the last two years. Thanks for the hard work that everyone puts in here. Heres to another year of community at the WGOM.
Congratulations on four years, SBG, and thanks for letting us hang out in your mom's basement with you.
There are plenty of other Twins blogs, but only the WGOM has grown to become a real community of fans. Watching a Twins game on TV is great, but being able to share the experience with SBG Nation is the next best thing to being at the game. My only regret is that I haven't been able to make it to any of the conventions yet to meet more of the citizenry in person.
Also, during finals week in college I learned to play the harmonica. My roommates came very close to committing homicide.
I am glad I got a chance to share a ball game with you this summer, even if I left you out standing in the rain for an inning. I've been thinking about having a precinct meeting sometime yet this summer. You know, a WGOM sponsored ball game, but without all the glitz of a picnic.
Count me in.
I picture Stick's mom's basement more like the apartment in Pi

+1 power tool to the temple... wait, that doesn't sound right.
Well, someone knew the reference, anyway

I caught it, too. I really liked that movie.
It's a happy birthday all around. Meat bro and sis' in law just delivered a 7lb 6oz baby girl! I'm an uncle again!
Congrats! Your niece shares a birthday with my nephew, who turns 11 today. And my first cousin. And, it's also my half-birthday.
It's also my FIL's B-day today. A good day to be born.
Congrats to the meat family.
Another little meatball on the plate. Congrats!

Have a cigar!
I don't mean to step on the good Father's toes, but former Twin Terry Tiffee is on the US Olympic baseball roster.
In commemoration of this momentous occasion, I'd like to offer you a laurel and hearty handshake.
The sheriff is near!
Liriano angry.
I heard about this on the radio here (Chicago) on my way back to work from lunch. And was actually going to post the same article here, but you beat me to it... I don't know how you don't have room for an arm like that, no matter the rotation.
The Pioneer Press had an article yesterday that had Assistant GM Rob Antony saying that the Twins have to make room for Liriano because he has done all he can in Rochester.
I think that is BS. The Twins make a good point when they say they had him up earlier in the year and he wasn't ready yet. It's not like Liriano had been tearing up AAA all season. It's just been the past few weeks he's really started to strike people out again.
I have no doubt the Twins have been guilty of keeping guys in the minors too long to put off arbitration but I don't think this is an instance.
I don't think he has a leg to stand on. Why shouldn't the Twins be caeful with him after the disaster in April?
Happy Birthday, WGOM. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is one of my absolute favorite sites on the whole of the interwebs. I hope you'll all come check out the blog I start in two years when I am preparing to take the Minnesota bar.
Where are you in law school, DK?
The U of Minnesota.
Congrats on 4 years.... It is also the 70th anniversary of Wrong Way Corrigan's infamous flight.
for those of you who have cable, a lot of outfits are running a Free preview of the Extra Innings baseball package. If you are jonsing for some ball tonight, check that out
How you liking me now, Stickman?
I'm hoping he's great.
he looks exactly my best friend from high school
but about a foot taller
Hey boss -- I'm wanting to update the Library posts and add tags, etc.; where does one add Related Links? Anything else I should update?
I'm pretty sure that the related links are automagically updated as you add tags and such.
RE: my only one category, keep using the Featured Articles category, but also add one more. I'm going to remove that category eventually.
The Related Links is an automated feature. When you add links, posts are linked together.
I really want only one category per post. For the Library, the category is SBG Library. Also, because you will have an author page, don't put your name in the tags. Look at the most recent SBG Library posts for guidance. I've updated them.
By the way, I have the full tag cloud on the front page. That's basically for the last two months! Eventually, I'll trim that back on the front page, (but I'm going to put a full tag cloud on a page).
Got it -- danke.
Oakland's quasi-fire sale continues
Joe Blanton to the Phils
Blanton has been Livan-esque this year. No great loss to the A's. He might come around to "ok" in the NL, however.
3.12 ERA in 34 2/3 innings in wins (21:13 K:BB, 4 HR, 674 OOPS); 5.88 ERA in 75 innings in losses (30:17, 7, 799); 4.67 ERA in 17 1/3 innings of no decision (11:5, 1, 775).
What I like is Stick's continuous dinking around with the site.
Nary a month goes by without major renovattion going on. We will know the WGOM is over when Stick hasn't done a makeover lately.
Congrats on the milestone, pally!
Hey Boss, congrats on the milestone! Of course, that correlates directly with a spike in time-wasting activities by Moss...
