Top Jimmy: Excuse Me, But These Twins Stories Are Pretty Good, Too

Posted by SBG on Friday, July 18th, 2008 at 9:32 am

TJ makes some sense, and says he'll take the Twins All-Stars over Josh Hamilton.

Redemption is a glamorous story-line, but isn't it better this way, following three model athletes with no need for it?

Yeah, I can get behind that.

Sure, the Hamilton story line has officially been beaten into the ground like a tent stake. That doesn't make it any less remarkable of a story--just one that's been told too many times.

True. The backlash isn't against him, it's against people like Peter Gammons comparing him to Babe Ruth and Jackie Robinson.

If the Twins make the playoffs and the Rangers don't, I can see Morneau surpassing Hamilton in MVP votes if their numbers are at all comparable (and I'm guessing they will be except for the RBI totals).

Yeah, I didn't touch that one. JOE MAUER IS THE MVP OF THIS TEAM!!!!!!!!! (Of course, I should point out that the SBG Nation citizenry are torn on that as evidenced by the poll that we conducted earlier this week.)

Morneau's not even the most valuable player at his position. But, it's not like anyone bothered to consider position in the 2006 MVP voting, so I don't know why they'd do anything sensible like that this year.

And, like Morneau, Hamilton hasn't even been the most valuable player on his team so far this year--that would be Ian Kinsler, leading the league with a 52.5 VORP. He's not great on defense, but might be good enough to hold off Grady Sizemore at 42.5 VORP. Mauer and Morneau are both around 30-35, so there's no way I would really put them in the discussion at this point, especially Morneau, who is a below average defender.

Is VORP park-adjusted?

It is definitely park-adjusted. Kinsler, Bradley, and Hamilton are just animals.

Watching the ASG, I completely forgot that Kinsler didn't get the start. In like inning 14, I thought "...and Kinsler's still in there!" Wait, that can't be right...

I have to agree with Jimmy on this one. Probably because I always identified a lot more with the brother who stayed at home in the prodigal son story.
