Cup of Coffee: July 19-20, 2008

Posted by SBG on Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at 7:45 am

No one selected "Swept" in the poll on this series and I guess that makes us all smart (although, to be sure, the *CORRECT* answer was "ZOMG! I just LOVE Josh Hamilton...". I missed out on the game, but the Twins shut the Rangers out? That's fantabulous!

I'm going to try to do a few things with the site this weekend, but I'm pretty sure that nice weather and a HoneyDo list stretching the length of my arm will preclude that. I did see The Dark Knight last night, although I will say that BabySBG did not cooperate, so I was not able to pay as much attention as I would have liked. It is showing at the IMAX at the Minnesota Zoo, so I might take that in, too. The Drive In was surprisingly not all that full. We were in the front row, which is GREAT. Plus, there were about 10 college girls sitting next to us, which would have been great if I was single and Andrew's age. Ah, the wife was better looking than any of them (true!).

Hey SBG, I'm making good headroads into updating and tagifying The Library posts, but CarterHayes posted the Hrbek autobio, so I can't edit that particular one. With some luck, I'll have them all done (or close) before band camp next week.

Speaking of band camp, I'm going to miss the Twins -- might have to finagle a way to get a paper in the mornings so I can at least have a boxscore to pour over.

And I really thought I'd see a "Twins will shut out the Rangers" comment from New Guy near the top of last night's gamelog. I'm disappointed.

I'm working on the site this morning. See any changes? Hint, look at the LTE form.

OMG, img! Our button options are expanding. Coolness!

I noticed the tag buttons as well; cumbersome, but it'll prevent typoes when re-entering existing tags, I guess.

And hey, speaking of LTE form, I always thought "Mail Your Letter" wasn't the best wording for the Post Your Comment button.

(guess I'd better test out the img button!)
cool!

"Post Your Comment"?

hmmmm...now how are AMR, Banjo, or Andrew getting on the tag list entries?

How early did you get there to get the front row spot? Also, does the movie get canceled in rain (since it's looking that way tonight)? Inquiring minds want to know so they can plan their evening.

SBG
SBG replied on July 19th, 2008 at 8:57 am

No cancelling because of rain. We sat through a rain movie last year (sparse crowd). We were there ~8:00. I don't know if that will be early enough tonight or not.

went to the early matinee today. I have to say that all the hype about Heath Ledger's performance doesn't do justice to it. He was awesome.

and the movie was excellent, too.

but what's up with Rachel Dawes sleeping with her bosses? What a sad stereotype.

Neil replied on July 21st, 2008 at 7:12 am

I saw a matinee yesterday too - awe-some. I can't remember the last time I walked out of a theater feeling as convinced that I had gotten my money's worth.

SBG
SBG replied on July 21st, 2008 at 7:16 am

Ledger certainly stole the movie. I am going to have to see it again, but I think I liked the first one better. Maybe I'll watch #1 and then go see number #2 at IMAX.

It's amazing how crappy the other Batman movies were. I mean, I didn't like the first one with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, but as the sequels came out, it was brilliant by comparison. Compare Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey Dent (that grated on me like fingernails on a chalkboard) and the one in this movie. A bazillion times better. I don't know who first thought camp was a good idea for Batman. Batman has to be dark, dark, dark. The darker the better. Film noire noire, so to speak.

Haha, I saw the same thing and did a scooby doo. Whaaaa?

I actually saw Rick Springfield in concert... he was the headliner. Not a proud day in my life.

Looking at team stats this afternoon ... seems like the big difference between Twins and White Sox is pitching on the road:

Runs allowed per game (home/road)
Twins: 3.84 / 5.60
W Sox: 3.83 / 4.22

Runs scored per game (home/road)
Twins: 5.06 / 4.71
W Sox: 5.70 / 4.20

Everything pretty much equal otherwise - both teams have a half run advantage in one of the splits. So who is responsible for the terrible pitching on the road?

ERA by starting pitcher (home / road)
Livan: 4.04 / 7.48
Blackburn: 2.70 / 4.52
Baker: 2.67 / 4.01
Perkins: 4.02 / 3.52
Slowey: 4.00 / 4.47

Bonser: 5.40 / 9.13
Liriano: 5.40 / 16.88 (Super Small Sample Size)

Plenty of those splits are pretty small sample size, 30-50 IP or so. But Blackburn's already pitched 117 innings, and Livan's at 120, so it seems like their combined "extreme" splits have made an impact thus far. The 27 road innings from Bonser/Liriano didn't help either.

Super Small Sample Size

I nominate S4 to the SBG Lexicon

Nice use of the superscript. S3T could be small sample size theater.

Oh, man. Rick Reilly on golf coverage this morning. I can't believe I used to like this guy. Of course, I used tp like Chris Berman, too. He's ten times more insufferable on TV than he is in print. His speech consists only of one-liners and dated analogies. It's like he's the devil spawn of Shecky.

"I've always said winning a major championship takes guts, courage, and a lot of Tums. Kind of lile marrying Elizabeth Taylor. It's fun for a while, but eventually it gives you heartburn."

WTF!?!?!

Norman is just killing me. For years I've been cheering for this guy and he keeps looking like the greatest choke artist in any sport in the history of the world.

Oh well, I guess he still makes pretty good wine, married my first BIG crush and has more money than god. Perhaps its not so bad to be The Shark.

Hi, guys. Nothing in particular to say, but just thought I'd let you know I'm back after two and a half weeks spent moving and getting things under control.

Looks like you've redecorated. Not bad. It'll take some getting used to, but I seem to be having more and more changes in my life to get used to, and so far they've all been good.

Anyway, hope everyone is doing well. I haven't checked to see if SBG has the archives back up and running, but if he does, I'll take a look around and see if I missed anything major. I'll post some "Keeping up with the ex-Twins" when I get the time.

Moss replied on July 21st, 2008 at 7:34 am

Dark Knight is now #1 all-time on the IMDB rankings, ahead of Godfather and everything else. That's pretty incredible. It went to #1 yesterday after getting enough votes...before that, it had a 9.7 or 9.8 average but not enough votes to displace Godfather.

Typically a movie's average rating will go down over time. But even if that one comes down some, the movie will probably land in the top 10 or 20.

Moss hasn't seen it yet...looking forward to it. Batman Begins was a very well done movie, in Moss' humble opinion.
