LEN3 reporting that Span is leading off and Gomez is batting 9th. Also, Punto at SS batting 8th. The rest of the lineup is standard (as of late, anyways) for a righty.

The Twins usually take longer to make these types of moves, but they usually get it right and do it so its not a shock to a player who is receiving the perceived demotion.

Has Gardy ever heard of advancing a runner with hits? With a runner already in scoring position, the sac bunt is such a wasted out..

Big Mak
Big Mak replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 6:38 pm

but with no bunt you have to rely on Mauer or Morneau to get a hit, what are the odds of that?

Seth says Shooter Hunt is promoted to Beloit, I hope it works out for me to see him pitch sometime.

twayn
twayn replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Shooter gets bumped up, but Revere has to work on his leadership and urgency. I mean throws from the outfield.

bodly
bodly replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:17 pm

The problem with just looking at the batting stats for a hitter is that hitting is only part of the game. Fielding and throwing are very important too. How are his reactions to the batted ball? Is he getting a good jump? How are his routes? When he throws, is he making the right decisions? Is he hitting the cutoff man?

For a pitcher, pitching is pretty much all you have to do so the stats basically tell you everything you need to know.

Presumably, the managers and coaches in rookie league and low A ball are the best teachers of fundamentals. That is their main job. I certainly don't see any reason why they would keep him down in Beloit other than what they said.

twayn replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Sorry, bodly, I forgot to apply the snark tag. I don' t see any reason to rush Revere before he's ready.

Hello all,

Longtime lurker here. I like rhubarb, the Kinks, and Dr. Strangelove (as well as baseball and stats) so based on the avatars I am in the right place.

Went to last night's game with a pal who had great seats about a dozen rows up from first base. A few random observations:

1 - Almost without exception, any good looking woman in a baseball jersey was wearing Jeter's. Among all other jersey wearers, there was a much wider variety, from A-Rod to Munson to Abreu.

2 - There were a lot of people in Twins regalia, which was heartening. One guy had a Yankees hat and a Twins jersey. Perhaps he loves LaTroy Hawkins...

3 - As I recollected from a few visits in the 1990s, Yankee Stadium is underwhelming. Doesn't have the charm of Wrigley or Fenway or newer parks like Camden Yards or Coors Field. Probably because it was totally made over at the nadir of stadium architecture eras, the late 1970s.

4 - The exterior of the new stadium is not promising. Lavelle today wrote that it reminded him of the Bellagio, which is astute. To me, it called to mind an outlet mall.

Anyway, I have enjoyed basking in the wisdom among the posters on SABG and look forward to more of the same... and I just realized that the game is on television here in NY (I'm a little slow sometimes)...

I am amazed at how often Twins' batters can make a mediocre pitcher look like a cy young candidate. It's been less true this season than last, but this is 3 games in a row now.

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

It happens to everyone. I'm sure Rangers fans were pissing and moaning about that the entire series against the Twins. Just last night, Jarrod Washburn held the Red Sox to 2 runs over 5.2 IP.

brianS
brianS replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:36 pm

SSS: in 301 PA this year, Rasner has allowed 303/350/474 with a .341 BABIP. 6.18:2.42 K:BB per 9, 7 HR, 21.9 pct LD.

so, uh, he has sucked. So he should kill us.

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:40 pm

4.43 xFIP is essentially leage average for a starter. He's decent.

brianS
brianS replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:50 pm

so far, the league-average hitting line is 264/333/411. The average line against relievers is 253/334/394. His line looks to be significantly worse than the average line against starters. Just sayin'.

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Looks significantly worse, but is not significantly worse.

brianS
brianS replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 8:07 pm

ubelmann
ubelmann replied on July 22nd, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Could be some of that and some bad luck. Plus, over 12 starts, you don't necessarily see a typical cross-section of the league.
