Cup of Coffee: July 23, 2008

Another day, another embarrassing loss to the Yankees. I just want to know why it is that the Twins broadcast was showing little vignettes about Yankee Stadium last night. Do we all care about that? Are the Yankees supposed to be revered by everyone? Pffft.

JoePos changes his story on Musial. Instead of a walkoff three run triple in 1952 after a homer was disallowed because a ball came rolling on the field, negating the grand slam, the story is that Musial hit a liner into the right field corner in a game in Chicago where the Cubs led 3-0 in the top of the seventh. The first base umpire called it foul. Two Cardinals (Solly Hemus and Eddie Stanky) were ejected. Musial then hit another ball into the right field corner to double in a single run, cutting the lead to 3-1. The Cards went on to score six in the inning and win 6-4. That story lacks more than a little of the punch of the other one.
This is not a big deal, but it reminds me of this story. Stories that are untrue are of no value. I don't care who writes them.
Kudos to him for the correction... I would think lots of people wouldn't have bothered.
Right. Like the Jeter story I linked to from above. I (and others) emailed ESPN -- absolutely no response -- and the story still stands today.
Joe Sheehan of BP on Johan Santana. (By the way, BP is free this week. Check it out if you are interested.)
And I didn't realize this: Santana pitched 8 innings last night and gave up 2 runs, leaving the game ahead 5-2. The bullpen coughed up 6 in the ninth and Mets lose.
Can't Santana just once carry the baton to victory?
Seriously?
Judging by this article it would seem that Mets beat writers would like to blame the Twins for Santana's poor performances. I love this quote:
Definitely concrete evidence that Santana is a puss, while also admitting that the bullpen coughed up 6 runs to lose the game. Man, what a freaking joke. I know that Santana wanted to pitch on that stage, and deserves some of what he gets there, but I feel for the guy. Then again I can think of 137 Million reasons that I don't have to feel for him either.
I shouldn't justify that with a post, but I think I'm going to anyway.
The Twins need to start a brawl with the Yankees. Bean Jeter in the first inning.
Not a bad idea. The Twins are just like cowering puppies in New York. Time to stand up to the bullies.
Plus, then the likelihood is that the retaliation will help the Twins bump up their league-worst (tied with Seattle) HBP of 18. Cleveland leads the way with an astounding 60 HBP. That is an extra 42 baserunners just from bruises. Jason Giambi has almost caught the Twins with 14 all by himself.
The rest of the league wants the Injuns to wear their caps straight.
The amazing thing is that all 60 batters were hit by Captain Cheeseburger before he was traded.
The Indians total is magnified by the fact that Travis Hafner is as slow as molasses and I'm not just talking about his bat speed.
Of course, he's only been HBP four times, but I wanted to take a shot here, facts be damned.
pffft. Brawls aren't tough. They even have them in the WNBA.
Meanwhile, NHL fans flock to the WNBA.
I wouldn't do that, every time Jeter is beaned, a baby Koala bear falls out of a tree...and we don't want that on our conscience.
Every morning, I flip to my digital music channels (I call them the 900 channels, because that is where thye are located on my cable) and then do my internet browsing
its usually on the Classic Rock channel, because thats the kind of music I love the most.
In the last hour, I have heard 2 Neil Young songs, both of the from the album 'Rust Never Sleeps' (My My Hey Hey, and Hey Hey My My)
I have never been bothered to get this album, and I don't know why. It is now added to my amazon.com 'need to purchase this' list
Inspired by Neil Young week here at the WGOM, I downloaded Rust Never Sleeps a month or two ago. I also raided a friends classic rock collection to get After the Gold Rush (with his permission, of course)
I really like these albums, my dad is an enormous Neil Young fan, so I had heard the songs before, but I have definitely gained a new appreciation for him recently.
Glad to hear it, boys.

This calls for cake.

edit- Oopsie. That cake was s'posed to go to the anniversary couple...
No need to be sad today. There's Beer on the front page!
Last night the Pork Chop and I had the best dinner that we've had in years. If you ever make it to Albuquerque and are in the mood for some excellent dining I suggest that you eat at the Slate Street Cafe. I had sliced steak with stout glace, she had pan seared scallops. They have an excellent wine list, and fancy cupcakes for dessert. All in all (except for the Twins drubbing) it was a great anniversary night out.
Article on Darryl Strawberry and the ST. Paul Saints mentioning the American Association All Star game played last night.
I turned on the TV last night while eating some late dinner and caught the ninth inning of that game on channel 45. I was glad I did. I'm watching the Northern Division pitcher going through the top of the ninth, while his team was down something like 11-1. For no reason, Bill Murray walks out to the pitcher's mound to talk to the pitcher and the bemused infield. And he starts handing out bubble gum. He yucks up the players for a few minutes, and the ump comes up do do the typical thing of breaking up the "conference" on the mound - except Murray gives him a bag of sunflower seeds and sends him back to home plate. Murray continues to cheer up his losing side on the mound for a bit, then heads back to the dugout (making a pit stop to also give a piece of gum to the Southern division guy in the batter's box).
Pretty funny moment. I didn't think Murray hung around much at Saints games these days. He was clearly doing his part in cheering up his team during a blowout and having a good time himself.
So I heard a clip on ABC News radio from John McCain, where he credited President Bush for the drop in oil this past week (Its down almost 20 bucks a barrell)
So, if the Pres gets credit for the drop, why doesn't he get blame for letting it raise a billion percent in thelast few years? I wish politicans would just try to tell thier story without resorting to spin all the time. (Obama spins the facts his way too, its just not as noticable). Yes I would be living in a dreamland if that happened
