Game 101: Twins at 1927 Yankees

Posted by ubelmann on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at 11:00 am

Perkins vs. Mussina

Coming off of a 2-day break, the Twins head into their LAST GAME EVER AT YANKEE STADIUM (EVER!!!!1oneone!!!1111!!!), with Perkins and his 4.80 xFIP facing off against a borderline (or better) Hall-of-Fame candidate in Mike Mussina, sporting a 3.67 xFIP so far this year.

But! The Twins' two-day break will hopefully allow them to overcome those odds.

davidwatts
davidwatts replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Red Dawg is in because its a day after night game
Justin probably asked for the day off from the field, Lamb is the only backup

meat
meat replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 12:38 pm

Oh, I get the reasons, but if our regulars can't get it done against the Yanks I have little faith that Lamb / Punto / Harris can do it. Stranger things have happened.

On the positive side Gomez is no longer batting lead off.

nibbish
nibbish replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Well, Span's leading off, with Gomez in 9th again, so we're at least trying to look smart out there.

It seems like FSN always televises Wednesday afternoon games, but never Thursday afternoon games. I wonder if there's a reason for this.

nibbish
nibbish replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 1:06 pm

The only one my friends and I have come up with is that Thursdays are Senior Citizen's days, so maybe keeping them off the air on Thursdays is designed to encourage force them to come to the game instead of watching it on their TV.

Tailor-made DP he gets the force at 2nd and starts trotting off the field like there were 3 outs. Runs Like a Field Plow Molina was the batter. Stooooooopid.

Those won't show up as unearned runs because you can't assume the DP, but those are not Perkins' fault.

Dread Pirate Will Young replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Again, as I mentioned in the CoC yesterday - it seems odd that the Twins can't win at Yankee Stadium since 2001. If only we could figure out something that changed in the organization. Something that might have an impact on the the players' focus and preparation.

E-6
E-6 replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 1:25 pm

So what was TK's record at Yankee Stadium, Will?

Dread Pirate Will Young
Dread Pirate Will Young replied on July 23rd, 2008 at 3:24 pm

Tom Kelly in Yankee Stadium: 34-46 (.425)
Tom Kelly in all other games (postseason excluded):1106-1198 (.480)

Ron Gardenhire in Yankee Stadium: 3-19 (.136)
Ron Gardenhire everywhere else: 586-463 (.559)

TK's teams struggled in Yankee Stadium, but he could pretty consistently at least steal a game or two. Plus, the talent divide was much, MUCH, MUCH100 greater during the late 90s than at any point during the Gardy Era.
