Cup of Coffee: July 24, 2008
July 24th, 2008 by SBG
That was fun, wasn't it? Three non-competitive losses, perhaps the worst series of the season. And it seems like the Twins always play that way in New York. It makes me wonder if there is some sort of "can't win the big one" thing with this club. That's a little absurd, of course, but think back now at the current manager's playoff record -- 5-16, including a 2-14 after that Oakland series in 2002 -- and one begins to wonder what is going on. Couple that with a 3-19 record in Yankee Stadium and S4 be damned, I'm getting sick of this team laying an egg when the spotlight is on them.

Moss has been willing to give Gardy more credit this year than in the past, but there does still appear to be a bit of the "underdog" mentality with this club.
There have also been several instances lately when players have been mentally out of the game. Moss has noticed three or four times in the past few weeks (and Moss isn't even watching the games all the time) when players have forgotten how many outs there were -- that was the first time it really hurt bad though. (As an example, Gomez was running in with two outs the other week, but he wasn't involved in the play.) Seems like there is still a lack of preparation and mental toughness, and that is an area for the manager to have some accountability.

NBA star Josh (not Brad) Childress sigs with a Greek team
I would not be surprised to see more 'name' players sign overseas. The dollar is super weak compared to the Euro. So even after taxes (if there is any) one is still making a fortune. I know in Hockey, some dude in Russia created this SuperLeague and is offering big dollars to NHL players
DK replied on July 24, 2008 at 1:41:04 pm
So far, though, the only good hockey players that have jumped to the KHL have been Russians.

Paging the Dread Pirate:
Tickets for the World Cup Qualifier go on sale Monday.
Dread Pirate Will Young replied on July 24, 2008 at 11:03:52 am
I actually sent you an email about that before seeing this post.
Andrew replied on July 24, 2008 at 12:09:17 pm
Either way, Chicago here we come.
Algonad replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:27:08 am
I still think we should have beaned Jeter in the first. Sure, we still would have lost but it would have given me a warm feeling inside.
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:08:50 am
I'm with you. If you are going to lose, make the other team hurt a little. That series was like an elixir for the Yanks.
Algonad replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:30:52 am
I saw the Dark Knight last night. It was good but not as good as Batman Begins. Batman Begins took the super hero movie to a new, realistic level. The Dark Knight was down a notch.
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:07:43 am
I think I am with you there. BB was SUCH a good movie for this genre. TDK is a lot of stuff, but it didn't make me go MAN! afterwards.
kg2005 replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:31:54 am
I disagree. What about a machine that makes all of the water in a city turn into "fear gas" is realistic?
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:35:23 am
The current water supply is filled with anti-depressants and female hormones.
kg2005 replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:44:50 am
Are you trying to say the League of Shadows didn't even need the Scarecrow?
brianS replied on July 24, 2008 at 10:49:59 am
yah. I loved BB, but certain elements were, shall we say, comic-bookish.... And as much as I like Rob Qui-Valjean Schindler Aslan, Heath Ledger's Joker was a much, much better villain.
maybe in the Director's Cut they will cut out the Harvey Dent character entirely?
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 10:58:58 am
The wife is out of town, so I'm going to watch BB again and then go see TDK again at the IMAX.
Andrew replied on July 24, 2008 at 11:00:13 am
I've been thinking on this, and I think I would have prefered to have the Harvey Dent incident be the setup for the 3rd Bale/Nolan Batman. I'm just not sure how to rework the plot of TDK.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:52:20 am
Well I sure am glad that I flew to New York for yesterday's game. That was an excellent usage of my time.
Jeff A replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:09:34 am
Bad as it was, I have to say the series in Chicago in early June was worse.
Besides, I'm willing to cut the Twins some slack here. I don't know if you heard, but this was the last series the Twins will ever play in Yankee Stadium. That had to add to the pressure.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:13:13 am
Really? I hadn't heard that mentioned. Is Yankee stadium closing down or something?
Diggity Dino replied on July 24, 2008 at 10:03:26 am
No, they are just having the Twins forfeit all future games to save the pitcher's arms.
socaltwinsfan replied on July 24, 2008 at 11:36:02 am
If Mike Mussina makes the Hall of Fame, he'll have the AL Central to thank. He's now 86-45 against those teams. The 86 wins are more wins than he had against the AL East, the division in which he's pitched his entire career. He's 22-6 with a 3.06 ERA against the Twins and he's 17-7 with a sub-3.00 ERA against both Detroit and KC.

Rhu_Ru has been MIA. You don't suppose he OD-ed on the pills that meat sent him?
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 1:15:33 pm
Band camp, I think.
Algonad replied on July 24, 2008 at 3:02:56 pm
I've met Rhu_Ru and promised I wouldn't reveal his true identity but I figured I'd share a picture of him he sent me from band camp.
Algonad replied on July 24, 2008 at 3:04:27 pm
Oh, never mind. I can't figure out these new-fangled computers!
meat replied on July 24, 2008 at 5:24:30 pm
Dude, I can't be held responsible for Rhu_Ru's decisions regarding the pharmaceuticals I may or may not have given him. I'm just sayin'...

Andrew, you'll be getting an invoice with charges associated with lost productivity after you gave me that link to "TV Links" (that I requested). I am fully engrossed in the second season of Dexter right now.
Andrew replied on July 24, 2008 at 1:57:52 pm
Yeah, you're gonna wanna be careful with that. It can and will lead to obsessive catching-up on shows you've wanted to see for awhile.
brianS replied on July 24, 2008 at 3:57:54 pm
is all the additional foul language the major difference between the cable version of Dexter and the broadcast version? 'cuz the family S found the broadcast version rather captivating.
brianS replied on July 24, 2008 at 4:00:11 pm
plus, I spent waaay too much time kind of hoping that Darla would put on her catholic school-girl uniform and go all fangy on Dexter.

In case you were wondering, I was doing a little playing around on the site tonight. A small innovation: if you roll your mouse over the tabs in the tabbed window, it changes the tab without a mouse click.

Sans avatars we are like B52 bombers without cities to bomb.
New Britain Bo replied on July 24, 2008 at 7:50:36 pm
Hey Stick - is this testing during production?
Real question - why is Michael Douglas on the podium at last nite's Tour de F?
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 7:54:54 pm
Boy, I have no idea.
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 7:57:07 pm

New Britain Bo replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:04:01 pm

SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:40:03 pm
How's this???
brianS replied on July 24, 2008 at 9:39:29 pm
pretty clean. It'll do.
I was worried that you were going to turn me into Rodney Skinner, but I'm seeing avatars after all.
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:03:51 pm
I'm also not sure how fast these are or if they are saving any processing time
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:20:26 pm
And we're back to the old way of doing things.
SBG replied on July 24, 2008 at 8:35:08 pm

There you have it. AJAXed threaded LTEs. That's good enough for tonight.
