Game 115: Twins at Kansas City
Posted by ubelmann on Friday, August 8th, 2008 at 6:00 pm
Slowey vs. Davies
Using Myron Logan's analysis of RZR data and VORP, a comparison of overall player value:
Defense, runs above average at his position:
8.06 -- Gomez
-3.45 -- Delmon
Offense, VORP (runs above replacement hitter at his position):
-4.5 -- Gomez
6.5 -- Delmon
Total:
3.6 runs -- Gomez
3.1 runs -- Delmon
Gomez is bad in obvious ways, Delmon is bad in somewhat less obvious ways. This doesn't make Delmon any better, though. (Also, Delmon is bad in ways that help expose the weak underbelly of our bullpen.)
Dumb stats of the day:
5-7 -- KC vs. White Sox
2-7 -- KC vs. Twins

So I puchased mlb.tv today and I have no idea how to make this thing work.
So I purchased mlb.tv today and I have no idea how to make this thing work.
and I just had to download some updates. This is going to be great.
Thanks to you (and everyone) who pimped the site at LENIII today. That's a pretty good gateway to find like minded souls who might want to join in on the fun.
You is welcome.
The wife wants to watch the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. I say, go ahead, I want to watch the Twins. If I provide no other LTE than this one, you will know that that was not an acceptable answer.
Tell her she's 12 hours too late (or whatever it is).
She can watch all she wants. We have four TVs.
Must be nice to be the boss.
ubelmann gamelog intros are back! Whew, that was like sitting through the all-star break.
Owie.
I kid! I kid!
That defensive metric has Carlos as the best CF in the AL with over 400 innings in CF (he's over 800). That contradicts a first-hand account we were given earlier this week.
Oh, Jack Morris, you are so rusty at announcing lineups:
"Joe Guillen"
"No wait, Jose Guillen"
Just translating into English.
Obvious prediction of the day: The Twins won't score in the first three innings, but will have a big inning after that of at least four runs.
Look at that haze! Where is this game being played? Beijing?
Gordo just made that joke too! I could go for my second joke at your expense but I'll decline
Bert made it a California joke.
That's right, I'm actually watching the game, though I had to drive 5 hours to do it.
You drove 5 hours to get a TV signal?
I'm one dedicated fan.
Nah, I drove up for the second attempt at my brother's bachelor party. We've got the tailgater package for tomorrow's Saints game. The first try got rained out, so we had to reschedule. It doesn't seem quite the same, though, now that he's married.
FSN has a camera with a foggy lens. Maybe an OF cam near the fountains. It's fairly distracting when they go to that camera.
Lots of low strike calls already. Note to Slowey: Keep the ball down.
You hope for that every game though, no?
Oui.
The Royals guys just said we are the 10th best fielding team in the A.L. . That sounds much better than 5th worse.
It's all about manipulating the data.
Atta boy, ya hoser.
Life as a bachelor:
Three ears of Iowa sweet corn. One bacon breakfast sandwich on a bagel. Tall glass of milk.
you should wrap the bacon around teh sweet corn instead of putting it on a bagel
Or maybe make more bacon and do both.
The whole thing should also be wrapped in a tortilla.
and more bacon.
and some cheese.
Oh, and lots of hot sauce.
More bacon is always the right call.
Why don't I just forget the bagel, cheese, egg, and corn and just have bacon-wrapped bacon?
Now you are thinking.
If you can figure out a way to make your tall glass of milk out of bacon, you'd really be in business.
I was trying to figure out how to mix the bacon and milk but couldn't figure it out. Maybe bacon flavored milk?
Haven't you ever made a shake before?
mmm.... bacon.
Bacon!
that's one of my favorite XKCD's ever
Joe Mauer is third on the active roster with seven homers. These are not your '05 White Sox.
Seven's a lucky number though.
Twins hate those rally-killing homers.
Can somebody tell Delmon that he's swinging a baseball bat and not a vaulting pole.
Maybe they could have added that to Delmon's commercial that they played after the first inning.
Ack. Delmon hits it to a bad place. I suppose we can be grateful it wasn't a GIDP ball.
Yay! Free bases.
Isn't that the second four-pitch walk to Everett this week?
Kyle Davies with a four pitch walk to a .185 hitter...... that sounds great.
And Delmon and Carlos are up there actually swinging...
The play by play guys said of Everett walking, i'm paraphrasing .... Well, one you are a .185 hitter you aer not going to be too aggressive up there. It will help you take walks.
Come on Go Go....
F!
Three walks and no runs. Gomez and Delmon take some awful at bats.
at least Jack Morris is taking them to task. Of course, I put part of the blame on Gardy. Gomez should have the take sign on the first pitch of that at-bat.
Insert compound word here > _______________.
To Delmon's credit, he at least took a strike (that looked to be outside) after consecutive walks, unlike Gomez he swings after Everett got a four-pitch walk.
and lets not forget a passed ball.
Gameday only here; watching the opening ceremony w/wife. D@mn, it's just like baseball: if I could shut the stupid commentators off and just listen to the performance, I'd be much happier. What a spectacular performance!
$300 million budget for this ceremony. It had better be good.
More than twice as entertaining as A-Rod, easily.
hehe ... A bullet to Nick Punto....
Good start for Slowey and his defense. Probably our best defensive alignment (although I would prefer Span to be in left if he's going to play every day.)
I am digging all these walks tonight
Now lets make 'em haunt.
I would dig it more if we could follow the with some hits.
like that!
First blood.
W00t!
Davies at 59 pitches already.
I would like to see some grand abiding from the Dude.
Well, I like two runs and one out better than one run and two outs there.
It is great when the bad defense in from the other team.
Your Kansas City Royals. More Kuu-bell.
Nice outcome on that doubleplay ball.
"and any other hitter in the league probably would have taken ball four there"
better late than never
