Bernie Mac is dead.
That's a shame. I wasn't a huge fan or anything, but I enjoyed what I saw of his work, and it's always a shame when someone dies that young.
A couple weeks' worth of keeping up with the ex-Twins. I don't have any more long trips scheduled, so I should be able to do this more regularly from now on:
Baltimore organization places Randy Keisler on seven-day disabled list.
White Sox organization signs Jason Tyner (as first reported by davidwatts).
Colorado outrights Mark Redman off forty-man roster.
Colorado organization places Mark Redman on the temporarily inactive list.
Colorado organization removes Mark Reman from the temporarily inactive list.
Detroit places Todd Jones on the disabled list.
Houston acquires LaTroy Hawkins and cash from the Yankees for Matt Cusack.
Dodgers outright Luis Maza off forty-man roster.
Dodgers place Terry Tiffee on temporarily inactive list due to his involvement with the Olympic team.
Seattle recalls Ryan Rowland-Smith.
Okay, at the present time this LTE is all fouled up. I'll wait to post it again to see if the problem magically resolves itself.
Okay, LTEs are fixed. Note that you can now add a larger picture (up to 150px in either direction). It is now done at the bottom of your user profile page.
I consider my small picture to be a "retro" look.
By the way I'm glad to see the new picture of your daughter, but I don't think I can refer to her as "baby" any more. Although the day will come before you know it when some guy does.
She will always be my baby.
Keep doling out those changes, SBG. Can you tuck the avatar farther up into the LTE top corner? I think it's better (IMO) having more text per page (less scrolling), and that would bunch things up a little better. Or, if it's an IE thing, "Oh, nevermind."
(continues to pine for the days of an LTE Edit function)
Placing it exactly where it is prevents it from spilling out into the next LTE.
Okay, I lied.
A few interesting notes from MLB.com's preview of tonight's game:
The Twins have won 16 of their past 20 games against American League Central opponents.
That's a really good sign. A "we're gonna win the division" kind of sign.
Coon Rapids is playing Rapid City in the LL Midwest Regional Final right now on ESPN. Coon Rapids (my wife's hometown) is up 1-0 in the first.
How come avatars are on the right now? It's better when they're on the left because of the way we scan a page with our eyes. I can instantly recognize an avatar on the left and know who the LTE is from the second I start reading. With this layout the eyes have to work harder.
I'm with Twayn. (It's called placement.) With this arrangement, I'm liable to read one of brian'S LTEs by accident.
Complainers.
Also, avatars on the left provide visual balance to the column on the right hand side of the page. Avatars next to the column gave that side of the page too much visual weight.
Olympic women's fencing on NBC at the moment...two Americans in the gold medal match.
And they're wearing space suits with LED lights in the helmet...hello HAL.
Back in my day they just sharpened the foils and counted the blood spots.
I was watching the prelims late last night
the one thing I like about NBC have the Olympics is that their parent company Universal, has a lot of TV channels, so the sports are spread out everywhere. USA was carrying stuff when i got home from work/bars last night, and they were still going when I woke up almost this afternoon.
This just in: historians have determined that Marconi does not play the mamba.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
Minnesota-linked tragedy at the Olympics.
Wow. That's awful.
(A friend of mine has been a long-time Bachman's employee.)
I was just going to post something on this, I jsaw it on TV a few minutes ago. I knew Paul Bachman when I worked at KARE-TV (he's the one on the right in the Strib picture). Sounds like it was a totally random attack by a deranged man. So bizarre.
So this is the first time I've ever seen olympic handball, and what sticks out to me most is how difficult it looks to stop a penalty shot. I mean, I thought that soccer goalies had it rough, but these penalty shots look about a thousand times harder than that to stop.
Also, I was at the Star Tribune, and I noticed that they sent Jim Souhan to China. I guess they felt that we needed to spread the poultry jokes around the globe.
No poultry left in China since The SARS.
Coon Rapids NLL fails in their bid to make it to the LL World Series two years in a row. Loses 7-1 to Rapid City. Considering they had to come from behind in regionals to beat the Coon Rapids ALL team, and come from behind at state to beat the Itasca team, and pull off a huge upset of Iowa (who was averaging 11 runs per game) on Thursday, I'd say they have to be happy with themselves.
Is anyone else getting up at 6:45 to watch the US take on the Netherlands in Men's Olympic Soccer?
Ummmmmmm....... no.
I always suspected you hated America.
There are only two things I hate. Those who are intolerant of other people's cultures - and the Dutch.
yea, Baby.
That would be fun, but unfortunately, your 6:45 is my 4:45. Though, now that you mention it, I might try to tape it and watch it tomorrow morning before I leave for softball. That may depend on how late I'm out partying tonight, though.
It is the morning of August 10, and the Twins are in first place. If you had told me before the season that Neshek would miss most of the year, Cuddyer would miss most of the year, that Lamb and Everett would contribute nothing, and that the Twins would be in first place on August 10, I'd have said you were nuts. I still feel like the Twins could fall off a cliff at any time, but it's been fun so far.
Yeah, I think you really have to give Gardy some credit for what he's been able to do with this team. The experts pegged the Twins as a 4th place team this year, but right now the AL Central is a two team race. I don't see Detroit climbing back into contention this year with their bullpen. I'm liking this team a lot. Tampa Bay is getting a lot more attention from the Eastern Sports Propaganda Network, but I think the Twins are just as good of a story.
There are other stories in the A.L. besides the Yankees, the Red Sox, and Josh Hamilton? Who knew?
This just in... LeBron is an animal. At the half USA 49, China 37.
The US went down 1-0 to the Netherlands before Jozy and Kljestian scored to put the Americans up 2-1. Unfortunately, the Dutch scored in the 93rd to tie the match at 2-2. The US can advance with a win or tie vs. Nigeria on Tuesday morning.
From ESPN regarding Mariano Rivera in non-save situations '08:
Mariano Rivera made his 19th appearance in a non-save situation this season, and has now given up eight runs in those 21 innings pitched. He has allowed just one run in his remaining 29 1/3 innings.
TPJ's last two-hit game was his last game with any hit, July 3 at Baltimore. He was 2-4 with a HR and a single, and 2 runs scored.
Good: at least TPJ didn't hit a homer off the Twins.
Bad: Twins had two chances to retire TPJ and could not. This was only the fourth time in his career in which has has had two or more PAs and did not make an out.
Ugly: KC Royals' DH, Tony Pena Junior
I took the plunge yesterday and entered the digital age. Vizio VO42L, 42-inch, 1080p telebision from my local Costco, $899.
Uh, wow.
And we seem to be receiving all the local channels in high def on our cheap-@ss cable. OMG. Do I really want to see the zits on the faces of the US gymnastics girls?
HD TV is a double-edged sword. But wait until you see golf in HD. I don't know what it is that makes golf in particular so much better, but it is.
wait until you see golf in HD
I haven't been interested in golf on tv since Jack was starting to overtake Arnie for supremacy.
The mere idea of seeing cigarette ashes falling unto John Daly's beer gut makes me wanna take the HD plunge.
it's a terrible, slippery slope. I'm now thinking that I need to get a DVR because my VCR can't record the HD signals (or even access the HD stations).
I mean, can I really be expected to watch tape-quality replays of Sarah Conner Chronicles, Bones and House this fall?? I think not.
Naturally, Mrs. S is ready to put the kibosh on any such additional acquisitions. But honey, we NEEED it. And just think how much cheaper MY toys are than getting hardwood flooring like you want!
DVR is the best. You need it! Claim it as a business expense....or something.
I do not have an HD TV, but I can watch the network HD Channels. I can tell the difference between the standard and HD. The picture is clearer, there is more screen. Its awesome. I can't wait to get my HD TV sometime soon
