I kid! I kid! I would never mess with a son of a b....
I implore you, sir, please don't speak of my mother that way.

This was probably the original "power ballad". And one never to be equaled by the hair-metal wieners that followed. Why? Because a good song is a good song is a good song. And Nazareth didn't write it. That would have been the husband and wife songwriting team of Felice & Boudleaux Bryant, who wrote it expressly for the Everly Brothers. Later, it was covered by Roy Orbison and, still later, Gram Parsons with Emmylou Harris. All of these versions are great.
very different from the Everly Bros' version. I like the Nazareth take much better. The Everly's sound too Pat Boone-ish for my tastes on that song.
First, I am not sure I would call Nazareth "Head Bangers." But that's just me. Also I would rate this version way below The Everly Brothers and of course Gram Parsona and Emmy Lou Harris versions. You need those harmonies to make the song work. These guys just looked bored.
Yeah, I suppose head-bangers is a stretch, but you hafta admit that the title track to Hair of the Dog would fit that description. And you're spot on saying they look bored--the singer's posture reminds me a bit of a dispirited housewife. (Chalk that up to lip-syncing, maybe.) Still, I have a soft spot for this version, as it's how I became acquainted with it. And like I said before, it's a very good song.
You're also right that GP and Emmylou's version is the definitive one. Those two worked a very special magic together, perhaps never more so than on their take of this number. As to expected, Roy Orbison takes to the material like a hand to glove. The Everly's version, like most everything they touched, is solid. (Pat Boone? LOL. That's like comparing The Monkees to the Beatles, as far as I'm concerned.)
Ah, Nazareth. I love this, ranks right up there with Whiskey Drinking Woman.
