JoePos to SI.com

Joe Posnanski has an announcement to make:

Starting next week, Sportsllustrated.com — si.com, for short — will be reprinting this blog. Don’t even ask how that happened. And, even more thrilling, starting next week I will write one column a week for the Sports Illustrated dot-com — I believe it will appear on Wednesdays.

Like of one Joe's commenters said, Reilly out, JoePos in - things are looking up for SI.com. It doesn't appear from what I can tell, however, that he'll be in the the print edition.

Good for him and good for SI. SI used to be the gold standard, but it's really slipped. Losing that idiot Reilly and inserting JoePos really is a massive upgrade. Plus, they have the best comedy writing around (AKA Peter King's MMQB).

  • There's a lot to like about JoePos -- but the more I've ready his blog lately, the more it seems to me like he's a KC version of Bill Simmons, less the wrestling references, of course. When I read this entry the other night, it reminded me how much I hate the technique of the paragraphs sandwiched between italicized "tangental thoughts". What I like about SI is that they don't wall off the content like ESPN and you will be able to read his stuff. I'd love to see SI go after a few of the ESPN baseball heavyweights - like Neyer, Crasnick -- hell throw in Keith Law, the smarmy bastard.

I did like what Pos had to say about Deford-- who was great at one time.

Deford was great at one time, but he also wrote that hatchet piece on Kirby Puckett. Not his finest hour.

I see what you're saying, but I don't agree. Simmons comes off as a pretentious douche - the kind of guy who liked all the bands before they "sold out" and finds his own inside jokes the funniest things ever put to paper (or internet). JoePos, on the other hand, seems to me to be genuine in his ranting. Sure the formatting could be different and a bit easier to follow, but he just seems like he has too much to say rather than trying to be "indie" or whatever.

  • SI.com has a nice stable of writers. Tom Verducci covers baseball, I think he is pretty good. Peter King, while obsesed too much with Brett Farve, seems pretty plugged in. I love the old grump Dr. Z

I always check SI.com first, then in an afterthought go to ESPN. I hate that all their articles are not free

    Whatever happened to Steve Rushin?

    • He still married to Rebecca Lobo?

Wiki says yes--with two kids. (I'd forgotten about that.)

It appears he's got a blog. I'll have to check this out as I remember enjoying his writing. Not sure if that was predicated on the "local-boy-made-good-angle", or if he was actually funny. I'm thinking it was the latter.
