Game 134: Minnesota at Oakland
Posted by SBG on Thursday, August 28th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
The Twins continue the West Coast portion of their monster road trip with the first of four games in Oakland tonight. Game time is 9:05 PM CDT time. The pitching matchup is Nick Blackburn v. Dana Eveland.
The Athletics are one of the original eight American League teams and have won nine World Championships, second only (among AL teams) to the Yankees' 26 titles (St. Louis has 10 championships). They've won four of those titles in Oakland -- and five more in Philadelphia, all before 1930. They also spent several years in Kansas City, making the A's the only A.L. team to play more than one season in three different cities.
The Philadelphia Athletics were managed for their first 50 years of existence by Connie Mack, who also had an ownership stake in the club (he became the sole owner of the club in 1936). Mack led the A's to World Series championships in 1910, '11, and '13, sold off his team and spent seven consecutive seasons in last place. Eventually, he built another winner that won the American League in 1929, '30, and '31, with the first two of those seasons also including World Championships. It is notable that by winning those three consecutive pennants, his teams were a combined 47 1/2 games better than the Babe Ruth-led Yankees. After that run, the A's fell into a long period of decline and by 1950, Mack's last year as manager (he was 87 at the time), the A's had been last in the American League 10 times in 16 years. Mack holds several managerial records that will certainly never be topped -- 50 years as the manager of one club, 3731 wins (including 2+ years as a player/manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates), and the biggie -- 3948 losses. Those first two records are pretty much insurmountable, but that last one, whoa. I can't imagine anyone getting anywhere close to that. As of this writing, Tony LaRussa has 2130 losses (to go along with 2449 wins). So, LaRussa is still almost 1300 wins away, but over 1800 losses away. (Tony, by the way, has a chance for the second most wins, ever, which is John McGraw's 2763 wins.) Of course, LaRussa also managed the A's to a World Series title in 1989.
Mack owned the A's until they moved to Kansas City in 1955 and became an unofficial farm club for the New York Yankees. Mack had sold the team to Arnold Johnson, a business partner of the principal owner of the Yankees, who moved the team to Kansas City and engaged in a series of trades with the Yankees that almost always favored the Bronx Bombers. The link I provided above includes the grisly details. Just another reason to hate the Yankees. I'm sure it was sad for old timers who remembered the A's getting the best of some of Ruth's teams being turned into a farm club for the big bad Yankees.
Fortunately, Charles O. Finley bought the A's from Johnson's estate before the 1961 season and brought some respectability to the franchise, at least in one area. He refused to make deals with the Yankees and started to develop some young talent. However, Finley began shopping the A's all over the place and he had a hands on style, serving as the de facto general manager of the club for several years. He eventually moved the club to Oakland. The A's of the early 1970s were a dynasty with three consecutive World Series Championships, but Finley was a side show. He was seemingly always in the spotlight, either by feuding with players or by trying a number of gimmicks. He had his World Championship Club playing in softball uniforms -- and the players were motivated by their hatred for Finley. He tried to move the club to New Orleans. His wikipedia entry is worth a read.
Of course, the A's of the late 1980s and early 1990s were another mini dynasty, led by the likes of Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart, Mark McGwire, Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson, and Dennis Eckersley. They won three consecutive pennants, but just one World Series, that being the earthquake interrupted affair with their San Francisco neighbors. Of course, the A's of today are probably best personified by GM Billy Beane, who has been able to put several competitive clubs on the field while operating on a comparatively paltry budget.
I've never been an A's fan, but I think that they've got a pretty interesting history.
Enjoy tonight's game.

I loved those 1970's era A's uniforms
What a dreadful "shoop" on McKinney's card. Yikes...
70's A's had style, for sure.
+1 handlebar--or, er, 2 fingers.
I seem to recall that team owner Charley O. Finley paid bonuses to players who wore a mustache.
That is correct.
Well, my work here is done.
By the by, nice intro, Stick.
I actually liked those 70's era A's squads. Vida Blue, Blue Moon Odom, Campy Campenaris, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Reggie Jackson, Joe Rudi...
They had star power.
I would have bet money that someone would have mentioned the Twins attaining SBG's 'Satisfactory Win Total' of 75 in the last series, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. It took us a couple extra games, but from here on out it's all gravy!
I hope E-mail Brown is in the lineup today! As an information technology worker, it's great to have a role model in MLB.
And as someone who's hungry (and has toiled in the hospitality industry), I hope it's A-meal.
SBG, love the history lesson. You should do it with other teams too.
I think that that game log should just replace the A's wiki page.
You're in luck, sir, you are empowered to make that very edit this moment! I'd do it myself but I'm on a static IP address.
I'll let SBG handle that. Wouldn't want to be accused of plagiarism.
Dude's a Biden?
Where's Geoff? I need some Libertarian help around here.
Obama / Biden
Dudebama Bin Abiden
Coincidence???????
-1 conservative humor.
2 RNBIs for the Mountie.
Morneau is soooooooo un-clutch.....
Ya know, it felt real dirty to be cheering for the Yankees this week.
Phil Miller with a nice write up about instant replay today
One of the problems with these West Coast games is the absence of New Britain Bo.
(Howdy, pally!)
UNO!
I forgot about Uno's. Thank you.
Always here to help.
Delmon's been much better about one pitch outs since the adoption of the UNO! rule. Is it too much to claim some small portion of responsibility?
Blackburn threw two balls that inning.
Blackburns not been shy about throwing strikes lately, but in his last start (and alot here tonight) he's run alot of 2-strike counts without being able to get the punchout.
It seems to me lately that he gets ahead of the hitters and then starts to nibble too much instead of going after the hitters.
Aagh, my eyes!
I liked it better when Oakland was That 70's Show.
Glad to see that you saved that.
Am I the only person who expects Span to have a hit during every at bat at this point?
You--and his mom...
ZING - got 'im!
When it's placed on a tee, I swing. I often miss.
He's gonna earn the "Denards" img before this game is through...
Twins have found three different ways to reach first base so far (error, single, walk). Now all they need to run the gamut is a hbp, fielder's choice, K-wild pitch, K-passed ball, and catcher's interference. Did I miss anything?
Act of God.
Is anyone interested in doing a WGOM fantasy football league?
I would be
8 spots left.
count me in. Ive posted links to an NCAA and NFL pickem leagues - but if someone else is willing to commish a full fantasy league - Im there.
If it is alright with SBG I will post a headline about it tomorrow. I will be more than happy to be the commish. As of now we have Watts, Geoff and myself. If nothing changes this evening we will take the first seven people tomorrow.
Yeah, I'd enjoy that.
ESPN or Yahoo?
Go ahead. I don't think I can participate, but you can do it.
Fair enough. I think that I will just address it in CoC tomorrow. We only need 5 more citizens.
make it four, I'll do it.
I'll do it.
As a consistent lurker on this site, I'm interested in both a fantasy football league and contributing with the loss of ubelmann, which, you all should know, is felt beyond the fantastic regulars at this site, but also by serial lurkers like myself.
gotta pack for Dallas and get to bed...looks like Blackie's doing fine tonight; someone get our offense to show up soon, huh guys?
I'll see what I can do.
me too. I claim the Justin Time double.
I will take the upcoming Harris dinger.
fielder's choice
all right Justin
Any way we can get Ruiz v. Cust no disqualifications/falls count anywhere/rage in the cage match? In fact, I'd like to see an all-DH pro wrestling league in the offseason generally.
Maybe A's suffer multiple injuries to their catchers, and Cust is the emergency backup. Ruiz tags up on a deep fly, and we're off to the races ...
Wow. Cristian Guzman hit for the cycle tonight.
I'm a step slow.
love that base clogging.
I will see that on ESPN when getting ready for work tomorrow morning.
Cristian Guzman hit for the cycle tonight.
that is soooo threee minutes ago, Boss.
Hey Boss- we can't have a WGOM fantasy league if you are not involved. Watts and I need you!
Man, I pride myself in not paying attention to the NFL! I'd have to be a sacrificial lamb.
Perfect!
Come on SBG, assimilate yourself to the machine that is the NFL.......
Just say no, SBG! One of the beautiful things about this site is the distinct lack of "fantasy." Especially of the NFL variety.
You were saying, E-6?

Now, if ubelmann would just come back and give us a li'l doom and gloom
evening all
I could have used you earlier Geoff, where were you?
I waited until Oakland scored to show up so I can show my mastery in aiding the twins to come back and take the lead.
Hey Geoff - thanks for the golf offer, but realistically I gotta decline. I'll only be there for 6 days and I don't expect
muchany off time.We will just have to get you back out to Utah under better circumstances then.
