Game 140: Twins v. Blue Jays
September 4th, 2008 by Yickit
Thirteen down, one to go. Not much to say about tonight's game. After the game, the Twins record on this road trip will either be 5-9 or 6-8, and based upon how people voted in the WGOM poll before the trip started, either record is a disappointment. For what its worth, the Twins were not being blown away in those losses as all eight were by less than two runs. I doubt that comforts anyone. The Twins have been giving away close games for the better part of two weeks . . . like it was their job. Lets hope that this is a correctable error, and that the Twins take charge early tonight. They need to find a way to protect close leads.
First Pitch: 6:07 CDT; 7:07 EST
Tonight's Probable Pitchers:
The Blue Jays will send Jesse Litsch, RHP (9-8, 4.01 ERA) (xFIP: 4.36; tRA+ 92) to the mound. Against Litsch this season RH hitters are batting .264, but LH hitters are hitting to the tune of .296. But like Slowey, Litsch does not allow free passes. For his career Litsch is 2-0, with a 3.18 ERA in three starts against the Twins. It will be interesting to see what lineup Gardy has in store for Litsch.
Kevin Slowey, (11-8, 3.70 ERA) (xFIP: 3.98; tRA+ 125) will put toe to rubber for the Twins. K-Slow leads the Majors in walks issued with just 18 (minimum 20 starts) which happens to be just in front of Jesse Litsch's and Mike Mussina’s 24. Slowey has walked just two batters in his last 44.0 innings pitched and went 94 batters without issuing a walk from July 28-August 13. Slowey is 6-2 in his last 10 Starts.
Since this is the last game of this series and the road trip, lets start off the comments with a couple of questions (if you want to that is):
1. We all know what the low points of the road trip were, but what were any of the memorable high points?
2. Has Pridie taken Harris's spot in the dog house? Or is it a double wide?
3. How do you feel about Every Day Eddie after a couple of appearances? How long of a leash does he get?
The Twins have lost 8 straight against the Blue Jays and all 5 contests this year. Its time to buck that trend. Go Twins!

Nate Tubbs Rules replied on September 4, 2008 at 4:57:26 pm
1. Its so long ago its fading from memory, but things were looking spectacular when we squeaked out an extra innings win vs the Angels in game1 and then beat them up in game2. Things were looking good, a nice 2-0 start to the trip from hell.
2. Easily. Pridie's going to have to do a lot to make up for last night, and lets not forget Harris did knock in what should have been the winning run in the 8th. I think Tolbert's throwing error in the 7th also makes Harris's re-entry into the lineup easier for Gardy.
3. I feel pretty nervous when any Twins reliever enters the game now, and that includes the guy I still think is the best closer in baseball, Joe Nathan. Eddie is probably at the top of that list though. He used to get by with a 92 MPH fastball and a 88 MPH change. I never quite understood how he got us through all those 9th innings. Now he seems to even have trouble reaching the high 80s and hitters (like Rolen yesterday) just foul pitches back until they get one they want. Short leash.
Its so hard not to be dissapointed in this road stretch. I know we're not as good as our record indicates but I've never seen so many games just given away over the span of a month. As pointed out in the NIcknNick blog earlier this week, they haven't been handily beaten since August 4, and they have 12 losses since then.
Moss replied on September 4, 2008 at 10:19:24 pm
"...they haven't been handily beaten since August 4..."
Now they have.
davidwatts replied on September 4, 2008 at 5:49:05 pm
1. Joe Mauer's 5 hit, and Justin Morneau's 4 hit game last Friday. that was pretty awesome.
2. Its a double wide
3. I am feeling less confident in Eddie. I thought he would provide some stability to a shaky bullpen
Gutzon replied on September 4, 2008 at 5:53:43 pm
1. While there were some high notes, I can't say there were any comparable high notes. The lows were much lower than the highs were high.
2. Pridie will bounce back into the lineup. If we're talking outfielders, I think the slow fade of Gomez is the bigger story.
3. Eddie looks like an entirely different person - less fire, more flop. Whatever grit got him through his first stint with the Twins seems pretty much used up.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:03:51 pm
I agree with Gutzon on point 1, Watts on point 2, and Tubbs Rules on part 3. Wow, that saved me a lot of typing.
brianS replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:52:44 pm
slow fade of GoGo??
He hasn't done anything slowly this year. His OPSs by month: 651, 796, 575, 524, 586. So, he had a "good" May, preceded by a Tyner-esque April and Punto (2007 edition)-esque June, July and August. That's horrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:09:14 pm
The Twins will win tonight if they get an early lead. After all, with our bullpen, what could happen?
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:14:24 pm
My blood pressure shot up after your first sentence. Thankfully, your joke in the second sentence rectified everything. It also made me sad.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:20:02 pm
As Abraham Lincoln is supposed to have said, I'm too big to cry and it hurts too much to laugh.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:26:07 pm
Bases loaded, and they haven't hit a ball out of the infield. This is not starting well.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:26:35 pm
LNP has got to be making his way to the doghouse soon, right?
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:32:39 pm
If '07 didn't do it, I don't know that anything can.
SBG replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:51:00 pm
Amen to that. I would imagine that Punto will be a member of the 2009 Twins. He won't be getting a two-year, $4 million contract this time, though. Or maybe he will.
Yickit replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:34:46 pm
They're going to need bunk-beds in the dog house.
Yickit replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:36:28 pm
Hopefully K-Slow has settled in now. It looked like he was pitching fine though out the inning, but he started painting the corners near the end.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:36:45 pm
Gordo said Slowey "struggled" in the first, but none of the hits were on hard-hit balls, and he did well to get out of a bases-loaded, none out situation with only one run. If the next couple innings are relatively quick, he'll be fine.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:43:59 pm
Once again, the Twins are doing very little on offense.
Jeff A replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:47:53 pm
Slowey is certainly not "struggling" at the moment. 3 Ks in a row.
brink replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:53:00 pm
He appears to be getting squeezed a wee bit too. He's definitely earning those Ks.
brianS replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:48:09 pm
Lots of "No Out Pitch" Ks so far.
davidwatts replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:55:22 pm
remember earlier in the year when someone posted a Black Holle/axis looking thing to count up the number of Slowey strikeouts?
yeah, that needs to come back. I wish I would of saved that pic
brianS replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:10:17 pm
I haven't found that, but I did find the Lego Stephen Hawking:

brink replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:52:20 pm
Slowey appears to be back on the horse. Honestly, he was snakebitten (apropos of course) in that 1st inning... giving up a run on a HBP, 2 infield singles, and a sacrifice fly. Now I know what Twins opponents feel like when Minny puts together one of those drip drip drip rallies.
Oh well, certainly not nearly as disheartening as a 3-run HR. But his pitch count is a little high now...
brink replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:55:38 pm
Another double for Nick... and that's why he doesn't deserve the doghouse, he's been one of the more useful Twins even during this terrible stretch.
I have no problem sticking guys like Gomez, Pridie, Boof, etc. in the doghouse as their value is very limited to the team, but no sense bailing on a guy like Nick who despite some untimely errors has been helping the team a lot.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 6:56:33 pm
Are the Jays announcers even paying attention to the game?
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:00:56 pm
ONE OF THEIR ANNOUNCERS JUST SAID THAT THERE ARE NO FREE SWINGERS IN THE TWINS LINE UP. HE THEN REFERRED TO THEM AS A DISCIPLINED BUNCH.
WE HAVE THE 4TH FEWEST PITCHES PER PLATE APPEARANCE IN THE AL! DELMON YOUNG AND CARLOS GOMEZ ARE ON THIS TEAM UUUUGHHHHHH.
brink replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:11:24 pm
Forgive them, they don't get many Twins games overseas.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:53:11 pm
Let me see if I can't see it out my window. ... Nope, he has no out pitch.

The Force has not been strong with Span in this series.

Man, off the bat that looked like a dinger for Tolbert. Not enough on it, though.
twayn replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:34:15 pm
I'm thinking Span was safe at second. He got there before the ball, and Inglett pulled his foot off the bag.

brink replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:36:16 pm
Dude, could the umps be bending the Twins over any more in this game?
Gardenhire needs to blow like Vesuvius here... my comments from last night still stand... him totally going off right now would be a close second to a vet player taking out a TV or something. He has my full endorsement to get tossed and I'll even abide some equipment tossed on the field.
What could it possibly hurt and maybe just maybe it would take the pressure off the team a bit...
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:41:37 pm
I agree about Gardy needing to go ape shit on something or someone but lest we forget, the umps gave us quite a few calls on Tuesday night.

twayn replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:44:34 pm
So we're in the sixth inning and haven't scored. That means Litsch is pitching a shutout. That's right, Jesse Litsch is throwing a shutout agains the Twins.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 4, 2008 at 7:46:21 pm
Only six pitches against the well disciplined Minnesota Twins lineup....

To anyone who is still here: tomorrow is my first blog post in a MinnPost kind of website. The Buffalo News recruited local bloggers to write for a "new edgy blog style" kind of website and for whatever reason, they chose me as one of the contributers. I was wondering if I sent someone the column if they could proof read it for me.
