Guided By Voices “Hold On Hope” w/ “I Am a Tree”

September 5th, 2008 by E-6

Before the Hold Steady were deemed the "World's Greatest Bar Band", these gentleman wore the crown--at a rakishly, drunken angle. And so today is a 2-for-1.
First up, a rare ballad. (Twins fans, note that title.) From 2001.

And as it's GBV, "Let there be RAWK!" Tallahassee, 2000. The Club is Open.

FWIW, lead-singer Bob Pollard was a 3-sport standout as a prep athlete in Dayton, OH and later pitched a no-hitter for Wright State University.

Thanks. Once I "discovered" GbV I went head over heals for them. I went from 0 to over 200 songs on my I-Pod in the span of a few weeks. I have a I-pod playlist of GbV greatest hits that is over 100 songs long. The top 25 songs on my i-pod based on number of songs played is GbV. I could listen to that band all day long and never get sick of them.

200 songs? That's barely 3 hours of music with these guys. :) Seriously, their catalog of "great" songs is pretty astounding.

I remember browsing at Let It Be Records when all of sudden Bee Thousand started playing. About 3 songs in, I walked up to the clerk and asked who it was. I bought it, and they immediately became one of my favorite bands. (It's still probably my fave LP of theirs, though, Alien Lanes, Isolation Drills, Mag Earwig, and Propeller all have held that spot at one time or another. I actually tried to be a completetist at one time, but Pollard's ridiculously prodigious output eventually scotched that idea. Still, I think I probably have 14(?) releases by the group.

Also got to see the band 6 times, including what was their first visit to Minneapolis--behind Bee Thousand--at the Uptown Bar. Before their set, a roadie brought up a bus-tub of iced long neck bottles and placed them on the left side of the stage. A few minutes later, he brought up another one and deposited it on the right side of the stage. One more(!) was placed in front of drum riser. I bet singer Bob Pollard opened 20 beers during the next hour and a half--though only half of those made down his throat. Fantastic show, though. They never disappointed live.

*Bob appears to have drank all 20 beers on the second clip.

I've heard "Hold On Hope" before from Scrubs. It's a very good song. Thanks for the second song to go along with it.
