Game 142: Tigers @ Twins
September 6th, 2008 by FirstTimeLongTime
I usually try to write my game logs during the Twins Thursday night games. So I sat down in the one corner of my apartment that gets free wireless, opened up a pack of cigarettes, cracked a cold one, and cranked up the Hold Steady, while getting ready to write the game log for today's game. There was one problem though, how on Earth am I supposed to write about todayt's game when so much hangs in the balance with the two games that fall between Thursday and now?
A win on Thursday, followed by a return to Minneapolis and a victory at home brings all of the joy back to the Twin Cities. Conversely, a few more losses and the tone would be a little bit more reserved. And what was I supposed to do if we split the next two games? Guarded optimism? And what about those Damned White Sox? They are playing LAAA on Friday night. What if they lose? There were so many questions, with so little time before today’s game.
So I tired my best to write a preview for today’s game on Thursday and I realized that there was just no way to make write something meaningful, with emotion, for a Saturday on Thursday.
So here I am, it is Saturday morning around eleven am and the Twins absolutely crushed the Tigers last night. Since Thursday Carlos Quentin has been injured (by himself), Ozzie is saying the Joe Crede might be out for the season, and Justin Morneau is starting to gain some support for this second MVP award in 3 years. Though to be fair, in the past two days the Twins were demolished by an inferior Blue Jays squad, the White Sox won against the Angles, and Gardy seems determined to play every single player on the 40 man roster, no matter the game situation.
Ultimately, the point be made here is that both the Twins and the White Sox have just over 20 games left. There are going to be highs and lows between now and the end of the season. We have to keep a level head on our shoulders. Currently, Baseball Prospectus gives the Twins a 26.24% chance of making the playoffs. My first though to that is, screw you BP! Don't you see that Quentin and Crede are hurt? Don't you know that the Twins have youthful exuberance? Come on we are only 1 1/2 games back! Then I realized, no, they do not. Then I tried to tell myself that it is only baseball.
That didn't work at all.
Depending on what you were looking for at the beginning of the season, this season may already be a win for you. Did you know that if the Twins win today that they will have equaled last seasons win total? How crazy is that?
For me though, matching last seasons win total isn't enough anymore. Sure, if you would have told me before the season that this team would have a 78-63 record on September 6th, I would have smiled and said, sure, and I bet that the Tigers and Indians have 90 wins each by now. But no, we are 1 1/2 games back for the division lead, and the Indians and Tigers are no where to be found. The Twins can do this, we can do this.
And if you think this is rampant optimism, well, wait and see what I have to say next Saturday if we are still in striking distance or, heaven forbid, in first place.

Just finished mowing the lawn and am sitting down with Rhubarb daughter to help her with a couple college applications. The neat thing is, she is next door dog-sitting, and we are both on laptops on our wireless -- high-gain antennas kick major @ss, just like the Twins are going to do today. Time to get some Baker K images readied...
Algonad replied on September 6, 2008 at 2:47:45 pm
I'm heading to the game with the family. The last time I took them to a game, we left in the 5th inning of a (then) perfect game. I was so busy with ice cream, cracker jacks, etc. that I didn't even know it was a perfect game (I did realize it was a no hitter).
So this time we are going to try to get there in the 3rd inning or so and see if I can coax 6 innings out of them. The hot dogs, etc. at about the 7th inning should help!
diehardtwinsfan replied on September 6, 2008 at 2:54:58 pm
Hopefully, a win can set the tone with the Twins going forward... and if things go well, put is within 1/2 game of the Sox.

nibbish replied on September 6, 2008 at 3:07:20 pm
That 'hit' call is ridiculous. An error could have easily been ruled on either the missed catch or the throw, but to call it on neither? Poor scoring.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2008 at 3:12:26 pm
Yeah, it's a tough catch, so I can see hit there, but certainly an error on the throw in any case
Beau replied on September 6, 2008 at 3:08:14 pm

StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:23:24 pm
Morneau has one job in this AB...
Get Casilla in to score a run from third.
Nothing more, nothing less.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:24:47 pm
Ugh...Morneau has chased 2 bad pitches.

StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:28:48 pm
I actually thought Morneau was beginning to get locked in again at the plate for the stretch run...I thought wrong.
Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:36:25 pm
Well, he and Kubel did combine to get the Twins a run with two out and none on. The two DPs hurt, of course, but no one can come through every time.

For those watching the game: was Buscher's out a reasonable gamble or a foolish chance?
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:48:28 pm
He was out by quite a bit...and although I don't agree with Ullger most of the time, I probably would have sent Buscher also.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:46:11 pm
Been a while since Ullger had someone thrown out at home; good to see he's getting back into the game again.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:51:42 pm
Big inning here by Baker.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:53:57 pm
And it starts off quite poorly.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:52:35 pm
Not a real smart play by Span there.
Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:52:46 pm

Beau replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:54:10 pm
he had no chance
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:55:02 pm
Given the circumstances, a foolish chance IMO.
Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:54:16 pm
Is the number of times the opposition scores right after the Twins score exceptional, or does it just seem that way?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:56:34 pm
both, if you ask me.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:57:14 pm
It sure does seem that way.
I would bank on most "experts" claiming it's due to inexperience on behalf of the Twins starting staff.
Beau replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:00:28 pm
and then Mazzone, a real expert, says Baker is mature and knows exactly what he's doing out there.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 4:58:27 pm
Why is Crain warming up?
Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:00:35 pm
Pretty good inning for Baker, all things considered.
Now, to whom do we entrust the eighth?
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:01:41 pm

Personally, I think Gardy is making the wrong decision by sending Baker out for the 8th.

Whiffers replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:14:54 pm
A couple things I don't like -
Sending a pitcher out for another inning when the manager plans on removing them as soon as a runner reaches. I get the short leash, but that's a bit too short.
I am really tired of announcers always bitching about pitch counts. It seems like more and more sound like Bert. Give it up, it is how the game is played these days.
Beau replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:16:32 pm

Pretty predictable bullpen performance.
We missed way too many scoring opportunities in this game. That's the real story. That killer instinct is missing.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:21:09 pm
BTW, is Joe Nathan not with this team?
socaltwinsfan replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:22:41 pm
Had to see that one coming. I'm like blind with rage with Baker. Totally inexcusable walking Santiago. That's like an error on a routine play. You have to throw strikes to that guy. Unbelievable. I was fuming before the homer by Granderson because I already knew what was coming. And Gardy had to go get Baker after that. This all came down from a walk to the No. 9 hitter. I don't care how he pitched before that or how the Twins missed opportunities to extend the lead, etc., this all came down to Baker walking a guy he should never walk, but especially in that situation. To me, the rest of the team is off the hook for this one. This is all on Baker, although he won't get a loss.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:39:24 pm
A little harsh there. Even though someone else allowed Santiago to score from first, Baker still allowed only 3 runs through 7 1/3 innings. I'm not going to hang a loss on him.
Guppy replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:23:40 pm
Gardy really has no one to go to in the 7th or 8th inning. Hasn't Breslow earned some consideration? Fuck Gurrier
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:23:54 pm
Fuck this performance.
Postseason my ass.
nibbish replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:25:05 pm
give breslow or nathan the fucking ball
Beau replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:26:27 pm
Ugh...I'll say it again. More than one pitching change in an inning should be against the rules. Any whining about the time instant replay would take pales in comparison to these nauseating chess moves.
Guppy replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:27:18 pm
When I hear Reyes, Crain or Guerrier is warming up in the bullpen my asshole puckers up and I get a sick feeling in my stomach. They've all let this team down.
Twinsfan, I agree Baker walking their #9 was foolish, but he pitched a great game and didn't deserve a loss. Can't hang it on him.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:28:22 pm
Every starting pitcher on this roster should get the opportunity to kick every member of the bullpen scare in the nuts.
E-6 replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:38:27 pm
That's probably not gonna help much.
nibbish replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:29:38 pm
Check the damn splits. If we want to start winning games, we'll make Breslow the 'setup' man, with Nathan on alert in case anything goes south.
Reyes, Crain, and Guerrier shouldn't see any situations where the tying run in on-deck or worse. Ever.
StatFreak101 replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:30:23 pm
Oh, so NOW Breslow warms up.
Nice fucking call, Ron.
nibbish replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:34:02 pm
On one hand, it's got to be insanely frustrating to only have 2 reliable relievers in the bullpen, but for Gardy to keep trotting out Reyes/Guerrier/Crain in gme changing situations is awful bullpen management.
If we don't make the playoffs, our terrible bullpen, and the poor way it was managed will be what killed us. No question. Our starters have done well, our hitters have done plenty, our bullpen/bullpen management has killed us.

WTF!?

Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:36:37 pm
I understand the frustration, but it's not like Breslow is some kind of superstar. Gardy could probably just toss the names in a hat and pull them out and have just as good a chance.
meat replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:41:16 pm
I agree, but the other arms in the pen have been ridden like mules this season and most appear to be out of gas. Poor bullpen management has cost the Twins a number of games recently, and this will probably be just another one of those losses.
nibbish replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:44:16 pm
Breslow's not a superman by any stretch, but he's better against lefties than anyone else in the pen, and has kept right handed bats quiter than anyone but Nathan. This whole idea of Reyes being some god against lefties is ridiculous, and Guerrier is just shy of the point where he should be shut down for the year. Every pitch he's thrown for the past month has been flat, and any good outings he's had have been coincidence lately.
Jeff A replied on September 6, 2008 at 5:39:07 pm
Remember the 2001 team that collapsed in September. That was a team with some good young players, but that really was not quite ready to win yet. It did lead to some good things in the next few years, though. Maybe this team will do the same.
