Sorry, Boss. I will behave.

StatFreak101 replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:02:46 am

Can I voice my displeasure for Nick Punto not being asked to be VP on one of the tickets?

:-)

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:11:05 am

He's not old enough, so you'll have to hope, hope, hope for Punto's shot in a future election.

StatFreak101 replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:19:05 am

Ahh, the rules!

BTW, your picture is too big.

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:21:31 am

Are you saying that you want me to shrink KG to Punto's size?

Hey Boss, I think you need to stick it somewhere here.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:27:46 am

I guess this means no discussion of anything Curt Shilling, too. Which isn't a bad thing.

Dicta replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:39:11 am

Can I still bad mouth the hated Bison? Did I just waste my warning?

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:53:18 am

ZOMG. That is always allowed.

Moss, you are on notice.

Moss replied on September 12, 2008 at 6:30:11 pm

Moss protests the warning...the comment was not political in nature but was a legitimate question about a link provided on WGOM at some time.

SBG, just curious, may I ask why? Is it a legal thing or a preference thing? Folks getting too outta hand? Just curious. Totally fine with the decision.

brianS replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:47:33 am

He just wants more stories about puppies

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 9:59:29 am

Because that's what I want.

I know I'm not around often, so my opinion should count very little, but I'm very grateful for this policy.

I dislike politics (I'm not anti-government, but rather anti-politicians; they annoy me).

I actually enjoyed the political discussions here, even when they got a little heated. It was one of the few places I could go to read somewhat intelligent conversation on the matter. Nate Silver's site should keep me tied over, though.

Can we talk about politicians if its not about their politics? Like say, Marion Berry gets caught smoking crack again?

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 11:31:52 am

I'm working on some ideas that I have bounced off a few of the trusted SBG Nation Citizens, but I wanted a cooling off period. Let's put it this way... THIS SITE won't be open for political discussion.

New Guy replied on September 12, 2008 at 12:10:18 pm

Top secret memo to E-6 and brianS:
Let's secretly plan a protest music week ;-)

I kid, boss. Unless you would actually be open to such a thing.

brianS replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:40:01 pm

I kid! I kid!

but yea, a week of protest songs would be kewl.

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:41:28 pm

I'll allow it.

twayn replied on September 12, 2008 at 2:04:16 pm

Hehe. When I went to the John Prine concert this summer, he sang "Flag Decal," one of my favorite protest songs ever. But his intro to the song was priceless. I'll try to paraphrase as best I can from memory.

"This is a song I wrote back in the 60's, it's a protest song that I stopped playing several years ago. But I brought it out of retirement because the President requested it. [Pause] Well, he didn't actually request it. But he's been asking for it."

Jeff A replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:02:05 pm

I decided a few days ago that I was going to lay out of political discussions here, so this is okay by me. I do have a question, though. Sometimes, especially this close to an election, there are various news items dealing with social issues, economic issues, foreign affairs, etc., that take on a political flavor, whether we want them to or not. Are those permissible, or would you rather we not bring up anything like that.

I'm fine with whatever you say. I am aware, as you noted, that it is your site, and you have a right to run it any way you want. I just don't want to break the rules accidentally. I would miss it if I wasn't allowed here any more.

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:38:01 pm

I'm thinking of reformatting things a little. My policy here has always been to allow anyone to say anything, but I'm afraid that the political debates hurt the overall appeal of this site. What I don't want is for people who are interested in things like the Twins, music, barbqueing, beer, and the collegial nature of the site to be turned off by a bunch of bickering. Lately, I have become distraught with things and considered a number of options. I decided on a course of action that I think is fair to all and I'm going to get this site back to the fun that it was. So, if I have to bite my tongue on the political news of the day for the overall sake of the site, EVERYBODY else can bite their tongue, too.

My advice is to hold off on such issues until after the election, unless you are provided another forum, associated with this site but separate from it, where such topics can be discussed. HINT.

...Adding, I'm fully aware that I am as much responsible as anybody for steering us down this path. I am passionate about political ideas and I thought I could interject it into this site without it becoming rancorous. That was a mistake and I've now corrected it.

Jeff A replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:49:17 pm

Understood. I've been around here long enough to imagine this is something you are not doing on a whim, but thought quite a bit about.

I just hope this election is not causing any sort of permanent rift between you and Moss. I don't know either of you, but I know you've been friends for a long time, and it would be a shame if a long friendship was ruined over an election.

Moss replied on September 12, 2008 at 6:33:16 pm

On Moss' end, this election won't mean a damn thing to the relationship.

Moss and SBG have been through this before...

zooomx replied on September 15, 2008 at 12:18:11 pm

I am a little sad by all of this... no, I am a BIG SAD about this. I used to come to the WGOM to get the truth about politics. Now, I will have to turn other "real" media outlets for their spin. Crap... now I have to go after KG (overrated) to get the boss worked up. AND, I don't know Moss well enough to pick a safe topic to get him all riled up. This sux!

Oh... and I am voting for Ross Perot, so I guess, consider me warned!

SBG replied on September 15, 2008 at 12:32:58 pm

Can't hear you. My ears are still ringing from KG's primal screams after he won the NBA title.

I will readily take much of the blame for getting the Boss in a state. I apologize for site-jacking with too many politically oriented posts.

This is just too good a community to be ruined by partisan rancor and I should have known better. I will do my very best to stick to baseball, beer, music and snark from this point forward. I'd hate to be one of the major causes of ruining the fun here. Particularly for SBG. After all, it's his lawn and I don't want to be told to get off it.

SBG replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:40:18 pm

Thank you, sir. Your contributions to the site are vast and deep. BTW, my beer fridge is empty and I'm heading to the liquor store after work. Any suggestions (other than really expensive stuff)? I need a good session beer.

rob replied on September 12, 2008 at 1:58:03 pm

I would recommend Smithwicks, by the makers of Guiness. I have never heard a bad thing said of it, and it's much lighter than a Guiness. It goes for ~$12.00 for a 12 pack.

zooomx replied on September 15, 2008 at 12:08:13 pm

I tasted a few pints of this at Kieran's Irish Pub after the Vikes stunk it up yesterday. It was tasty!

brianS replied on September 12, 2008 at 2:03:35 pm

I have three suggestions, off the top of my head.

1. Pyramid has an Oktoberfest Ale called "Broken Rake". It is a very malty, slightly sweet amber. An excellent rendition of the style (although the "real" style is an ale-like lager, not actually an ale) and very seasonally appropriate. Good session beer despite the slight sweetness.

1.(a). Pyramid also has a Kolsch that is a very nice session beers. The Kolsch (add an umlaut in your heads) style is light, mildly grassy/herbal, relatively low in alcohol, delicate. I think Pyramid's is a nice rendition of the style, although I've never had the opportunity to try the real thing for comparison purposes.

2. my buddy John and I held a mini-tasting of belgian-style wit's recently. The big winner was the Mendocino White Ale
http://www.mendobrew.com/brews/summer_white_ale.html

it was spicy, yeasty, refreshing and dee-licious.

we also tried (among others) the new A-B belgian-style wit (Shock Top Belgian). It was decent. Hey, a Belgian style from a belgian brewery!

meat replied on September 12, 2008 at 3:16:17 pm

Not necessarily a session beer but good nonetheless, the IPA from Odells brewery is fan-freakin-tastic (if you can get it in MN?) the Deschutes Brewery Mirror Pond is also a lovely IPA, good for a crisp early fall evening. Then you can always switch to the deer brand for the session. Just my two cents.

Gutzon replied on September 12, 2008 at 3:46:52 pm

The aptly-named Session from Full Sail is a good choice. Comes in little Red-Stripe-sized 11.2oz bottles.

brianS replied on September 12, 2008 at 3:59:22 pm

I did not know that was from Full Sail. I may need to try it.

Gutzon replied on September 12, 2008 at 5:40:12 pm

A step up from their "special" summer lagers, and dirt cheap for how good it is. It's a wonderful everyday beer.

Moss replied on September 12, 2008 at 6:27:56 pm

And Moss apologizes for any inappropriate comments, inflammatory responses, and the like. No harm was intended in any discourse. Moss also accepts blame for forcing SBG's hand.

As SBG well knows, Moss doesn't take this stuff personally and doesn't get heated up about such things...Moss is personally willing and able to debate these issues with anyone, and yet be friends with those who hold views opposed or divergent from those of Moss.

And FWIW, Moss rather thought the WGOM was unique in that, in politics as well as baseball, it could permit discourse between differing opinion-holders. Not many sites can claim that. Sites that pander to one view or the other attract only those who share those views, or those who lash out irrationally against those views. Moss, for one, will miss the debate and discussion.

I'm going to stake out a position in the minority and say I enjoyed the nature of the political discussion here. I thought it was well-informed and rational on all sides, and yet snarky enough to keep a nice "edge" to it. I'm not trying to paint myself as disgruntled, because obviously it's your site and I'm happy to see you doing what you want with it. I just want to offer my view.

(If that big HINT is indicating what I think it's indicating, I'm looking forward to it, because my first thought after I saw this notice was something that I think is along those lines.)
