Game 148: Minnesota @ O’s

September 13th, 2008 by FirstTimeLongTime

Glen Perkins (xFIP 4.97)

Garrett Olson (xFIP 5.28)

Here is to hoping the Marlo isn't upset about how we disrespected Baltimore in game one.

This should help with loading times.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:23:07 pm

Good work!

Garrett Olson is 10-10 over his career, but has an ERA of 6.72...as well as a BAA of .313.

Huh!?!?

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:28:06 pm

Win-Loss records mean squat, duh.

Beau replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:28:57 pm

How bout we get into first place again?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:29:33 pm

I'm all for that.

What do ya say Twins?

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:30:21 pm

I would really like to see Mauer get some time at DH. How taxing can it be on your body to bat 4 times?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:30:34 pm

An injury to one of the Twins relievers!?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:34:17 pm

Bonser with an injury that Telly really has no idea how to explain.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:32:38 pm

I could go for MLB.Tv posting a link to the game.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:33:36 pm

Wow, sounds like a fantastic freakin' lineup for the Twins.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:35:00 pm

Yikes. Tolbert, Ruiz, Everett? They might as well bring back Livan for the start,

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:37:03 pm

At least Pridie isn't starting...

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:34:49 pm

Lineup tonight for Game Two:

1. Denard Span, RF

2. Matt Tolbert, 2B

3. Mike Redmond, C

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Randy Ruiz, DH

6. Delmon Young, LF

7. Brendan Harris, 3B

8. Adam Everett, SS

9. Carlos Gomez, CF

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:37:10 pm

gotta play those dudes some time

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:39:57 pm

Yeah, in Rochester.

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:39:21 pm

It's hard to be confident with these guys and Perkins on the mound.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:36:36 pm

I really am disappointed that Mauer isn't at least DH'ing.

At this point in the season, there's no reason why Mauer shouldn't be in the lineup everyday.

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:37:59 pm

maybe Mauer asked for the night off

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:39:03 pm

I think Joe will make a late innings appearance if it is close.

socaltwinsfan replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:00:26 pm

Yeah, let's just have the guy play three games in less than 24 hours, two as a catcher. Chill. The only reason Mauer is sitting is because its a doubleheader with a day game tomorrow (expected to be hot) and a lefty is on the mound, which is the best use of Redmond (except batting third, but whatever). Mauer has been DHing when not catching lately. Just not under this extreme circumstance. There's many good reasons not to start Mauer at DH.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:39:36 pm

Let's hope the Twins do a little better versus Olson this time around than their last.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:41:14 pm

Not for nothing, but Brian Bass is on the other team now.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:40:28 pm

I can't get a link to the game. When is first pitch?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:41:47 pm

Right now.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:42:12 pm

Dandy

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:43:20 pm

link is up on mlb.tv now, too.

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:42:58 pm

Darnell Span keeps plugging away

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:43:11 pm

Span is having a good day.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:44:15 pm

Span is having a good day year.

fixed.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:45:23 pm

I'd really feel a lot better with Mauer at the plate in this situation than Redmond.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:47:26 pm

And I'd much rather Redmond get hit by the pitch than Mauer. (knowing full well that he wasn't guaranteed to get hit.)

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:45:43 pm

A mid-September double header with a chance to tie for the division lead. Beer run completed. Chinese food on order. Life is good.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:48:35 pm

Oh yeah, beer.... To the basement!

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:50:29 pm

What'd ya order?

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:56:07 pm

I decided to go with the grain tonight. GBP.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:59:28 pm

Can't go wrong with that.

I imagine it washes down the General Tso's damn well.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:05:57 pm

I meant the food...:-)

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:46:11 pm

If the third basemen would have remembered to tag him Span would have been out.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:47:43 pm

And after watching the replay I am totally wrong about that.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:46:44 pm

Leave it to Red Dog to get HBP.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:46:54 pm

Well, bases loaded, no out, for Morneau.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:47:36 pm

A grand slam would be a perfect way to begin this game.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:48:29 pm

Or a 2 run single...

Morneau, I believe, just tied Josh Hamilton for the RBI lead.

Yep, Bert said it.

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:48:29 pm

damn, Justin Morneau is making a play at Josh hamilton RBI lead

well, now tied with Josh

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:48:42 pm

2 Rbi's isn't too bad either.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:48:42 pm

Your American League RBI co-leader, Justin Morneau.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:49:54 pm

Josh Hamilton's story becomes less and less relevant every day.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:55:24 pm

I find it quite hilarious that it's Morneau making it that way. I keep picturing Josh Hamilton doing things other than baseball, and being all proud of himself, then the camera panning over to Morneau doing the same thing but twice as good.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:58:02 pm

Hamilton, you think that you are good at not doing drugs? Well guess what, Justin Morneau doesn't do drugs twice as hard as you.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:03:12 pm

+1 trip to rehab

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:49:04 pm

Ruiz is due, right?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:49:47 pm

For an RBI single!

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:50:32 pm

Can we please play two games against the Orioles every day for the rest of the season?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:51:04 pm

IMO, this is a critical AB for Harris here.

He has to get Morneau in from 3rd.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:52:05 pm

And he gets 'er done.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:52:13 pm

We know that Gardy's daughter is rooting for him.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:51:05 pm

Gary Thorn is impressed by Justin Morneau. So am I.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:52:24 pm

I like crooked numbers.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:54:39 pm

I'm going to make a call...

A Gomez 2-run double.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:55:43 pm

Well, it scored 2 runs...but I doubt it gets scored as a double! :-)

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:56:20 pm

Well, they did score it as a double.

I'm 1 for 1 on the night.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:55:05 pm

Randor Bierd (xFIP 5.20)

kortronovitch replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:06:49 pm

I always thought Randor was this guy...

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:55:24 pm

look at all these runs!

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:56:10 pm

Well we certainly have been wrong about this line up.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:56:21 pm

I think I'm starting to see how the Rangers put up 30 against the Orioles last year. They aren't very good at baseball.

E-6 replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:56:53 pm

Wow. Going to the bullpen?

I dare say Steak and Cake needs to make this hold up.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:59:05 pm

Yeah, he's pretty much been staked to a win here. He can even afford to give a couple of mulligans to the defense with a lead like this.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:58:55 pm

I've never been more entertained by baseball that is not entertaining. Time to make some plans for the night since this one is over.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 7:59:48 pm

There is still a lot of baseball left....... but I am quite happy with how this game has started.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:02:28 pm

I agree...way too much baseball left.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:01:34 pm

I say this a lot, and I'll say it again...

Big inning for Perk here.

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:04:07 pm

I think you and I should start a running gag wherein you call every inning a big inning and I follow up by being all Get Off My Lawn about your exaggerating.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:06:11 pm

I look forward to laughing at this on going routine.

socaltwinsfan replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:02:14 pm

If anyone else was pitching for the Twins, I would be very comfortable. Hopefully, he'll make sure to focus on the task at hand.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:04:13 pm

I totally agree.

Perkins inability to focus, as it seems, worries me when the Twins stake him to such a lead.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:05:14 pm

See, AB's such as that...

Just can't do it.

I know it's one AB...but still.

E-6 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:06:08 pm

I say this a lot...

I'm thinkin' too much. You're like Chicken fuckin' Little.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:07:28 pm

This might be an interesting game.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:07:52 pm

With every AB by the Orioles, I feel less and less comfortable.

Freakin' Perkins.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:09:21 pm

Would it be wrong for Rick Anderson to chew ass with Perkins?

Beau replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:09:56 pm

that's a disturbing image

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:10:34 pm

Meaning...tell him to stop pitching like a mental midget.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:09:44 pm

...

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:10:24 pm

Holy crap Delmon. That was a little league catch.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:10:34 pm

Delmon, you stupid son of a bitch. Don't you scare me like that again.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:11:11 pm

I think Adam Jones (Orioles) needs to claim the recently vacated "Pacman" nickname...and Perkins needs to claim a spot on the bench.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:13:44 pm

Either that or change his last name to "Uno Cero"

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:13:08 pm

After watching Tolbert's triple...

My Dad: "Pretty fast for a white boy."

haha

socaltwinsfan replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:13:11 pm

Bad start for Perkins, but at least he held them to two. Unless the offense gets totally shut down, which I don't see happening, I'm not overly worried yet.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:14:59 pm

Yeah somehow I don't think there will be a lack of offense in this game (knock on wood)

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:13:55 pm

Mike Redmond is offended that you will play the infield in on him.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:14:48 pm

Redmond gets one back!

#10!

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:15:49 pm

It's almost kind of aggravating when Tolbert triples because of all the fanbois who will go "OMGZ TOLBERT" and ignore the reality that he's a poor man's Nick Punto.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:38:06 pm

He's being a real aggravating mofo tonight.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:17:04 pm

K-ROD IS NOT THE AMERICAN LEAGUE MVP. SHUT THE @#$ UP ABOUT THAT !@##.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:17:34 pm

sorry about that.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:20:06 pm

No problem, that sort of reaction happens to everyone from time to time.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:24:40 pm

I realize that is an arbitrary award that has no real affect on anything except future contact negations but I cannot helped but get worked up over it.

With that said, K-Rod has 9 saves when his team has led by 3 or more runs this year. The only reason that his name is even in the discussion is breaking Thigpen's record. Take those 9 away and he isn't touching it.

I know that the save stat is stupid, too. I know the whole award is stupid but dammit, I can't help but curse about this. It is almost to the point that I would rather see Pedroia win the award. Which is to say, feeding fuel to millions of obnoxious Red Sox fans.

brianS replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:37:11 pm

Boy, both Ruiz and Young missed some pretty hittable pitches there.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 8:19:42 pm

That list of MVP candidates was lame. K-Rod? Dye? C'mon.

beer No. 1 was the fantastic Mendocino White Ale. I'm leaning toward the Lagunitas Censored Ale for the second.
