Games 147 & 148: Minnesota @ B-more

September 13th, 2008 by FirstTimeLongTime

After yesterdays rain out we are playing a "twin" bill today.  I wasn't sure if we were still going to use SBG's game log from yesterday so decided to throw an extra one in here just to be safe.

Anyway, here we are, with 16 games left in the season and the Twins are still just one game out of a playoff spot. By the time that the day is over we could have either a one game lead or a three game deficit in the AL Central.

Here is hoping for a one game lead.

Game 1:

Scott Baker (xFIP 4.23)

Daniel Cabrera (xFIP 5.29)
Game 2

Glen Perkins (xFIP 4.97)

Garrett Olson (xFIP 5.28)

I know I am a little bit early with the posting but I am going to be sleeping one off most of the afternoon.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 2:59:23 pm

This scheduling could get crazy for the Sox. It looks like they're rained out twice again today. I vote for a tripleheader tomorrow, really tire out their pitching staff.

Of course if it starts coming down in Baltimore I take back all talk of tripleheaders.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 3:16:14 pm

As I said in CoC, the grouble with the Sox being rained out today is that they will probably have an "if necessary" game on the Monday after the season ends. You know the Tigers won't want to play that game. That means if the Twins want to win the division, they'll need to be far enough ahead of the White Sox so that extra game is not necessary.

brianS replied on September 13, 2008 at 3:32:09 pm

You know the Tigers won't want to play that game.

I dunno. Who wouldn't want to stick it to the White Sox???

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 3:41:42 pm

Wow, Milwaukee looks like ass these days. (it's all I got on, cause I don't care about college football.) They're getting ripped by Phillie. They're collapsing big time and are looking a little iffy on the post season chances.

As I watch this, I think I prefer to have a team struggling to get into first rather than a team being at the top and falling off a cliff.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 3:45:58 pm

Attabury says Cuddyer has been activated. I'm not expecting big things, but an extra bat can't hurt anything.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 3:56:57 pm

So no TV period until 6 central? This is what Joe C's blog seems to say. I'm in Canada with Mlb.Tv, does that mean I don't get Dick n Bert or the Baltimore feed?

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:06:18 pm

Have they said anything about how wet the field is?

nibbish replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:07:48 pm

Huh... that's disappointing. Ah well, time to fire up game day, grab a beer and put on some music.

...I guess that's not such a bad day to spend an afternoon.

cctwinsfan replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:10:58 pm

The Baltimore feed is on MLB.TV - no blackout today - at least not yet. I will switch to FSN at 1800.

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:11:52 pm

afternoon folks.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:22:20 pm

Meat- Did you see the UB game today? It looks like the Bulls are turning into an actual football program.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:25:54 pm

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:26:55 pm

No I didn't, regardless what you say I won't believe you. The Bulls were so awful when I was there that I can't believe they could ever improve- okay maybe they can, but still, awful.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:35:09 pm

Did you watch that hail mary? They even had almost 20,000 people at the game today. Catch the Fever- you can finally be a proud alumni member.

Meanwhile, my alma mater goes to 3-0, and I still can't scare up any school spirit.

nibbish replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:14:21 pm

Ah, the dude is doing his part.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:14:24 pm

I wish they could have scored Morneau on that, but I have no way of knowing whether he had a chance.

Beau replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:16:45 pm

If it was a hard ground ball like Gameday said, I doubt Morneau scores unless it goes all the way to the wall and bounces around a bit

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:24:51 pm

Are you trying to say that Morneau isn't swift?

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:15:32 pm

This Baltimore announcer is baffled my Daniel Cabrera. I don't think that he cares for him.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:15:52 pm

Rats. A big inning early might have discouraged Baltimore the rest of the night.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:26:04 pm

Apparently, one run was not enough to discourage them.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:17:33 pm

Clutch on the Balt feed being up.

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:21:08 pm

Well there goes the perfect game. Way to go fellas. way to go. /snark

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:27:56 pm

Baker better start figuring something out pretty soon.

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:27:56 pm

Is Baker making his pitches and getting beat or is he missing his spots?

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:29:29 pm

Baker is scary today. Lousy breaking ball on the RBI single.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:36:42 pm

Okay, Scotty, new start. Get 'em 1-2-3 this inning.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:41:43 pm

Good job, Scotty. Now lets get some Twins runs.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:43:14 pm

All the fly balls to _elmon make me nervous.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:44:37 pm

As Dazzle said, they're finding his glove so far.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:43:49 pm

Spanning the bases!

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:44:19 pm

SPAN-tastic!

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:44:40 pm

D-Rock is bringing it in the field today. Late Gold Glove charge!

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:45:30 pm

I think someone with more photo manipulating skills than me should shop the "Denards" onto the Big Card for his home runs.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:47:10 pm

I love that Darnell Span kid.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:47:13 pm

Mountie-ing an attack.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:47:42 pm

Keep 'em coming.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:52:39 pm

We'll take all the breaks we can get.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:52:42 pm

Well, sounds like the O's D is helping us out a bit today.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:53:50 pm

Darn it, that was supposed to be a wild pitch.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:53:51 pm

Is anyone else annoyed that the Orioles announcer keeps calling him "Butcher?"

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:59:26 pm

Maybe he has watched a few Twins games this year.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:59:47 pm

So the Twins are using the Butcher and the Baker?

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:11:12 pm

You're on a roll.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:54:35 pm

I honestly don't think that I have ever heard a pair of announcers give a home pitcher a harder time than I am hearing now. These guys do NOT like Daniel Cabrera. Wow.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:57:16 pm

You must not have heard how Bert used to be with Scott Baker.

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:07:32 pm

yeah, Bert seemed to LOATHE Baker, for whatever reason

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 4:54:40 pm

Good job, offense. Keep shutting 'em down, Scotty.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:04:31 pm

Good job again, Scotty. Let's get some more Twins runs.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:10:08 pm

The Twins offense thoughtully made it easy for Dazzle to describe the action that inning.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:14:57 pm

Come on, Scotty, no let-up now. We don't need lead-off walks.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:16:35 pm

Baker struggling to find the strike zone today so far.

31 strikes, 25 balls...not good.

He'd be better served to throw strikes to these hitters.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:17:15 pm

Please give me Dick and Bert...now!

I cannot stand listening to Gladden...Denard Span "fields it."

WTF!?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:19:51 pm

Throw strikes Scott!

*clap clap clap clap clap*

Throw strikes Scott!

*clap clap clap clap clap*

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:21:40 pm

The Twins saw "how bad" the Mariners were Dazzle?

The Twins went 5-4 versus the M's this year, you douche.

Beau replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:22:56 pm

Just because we were terrible doesn't mean they weren't as well

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:22:20 pm

Way to get through it, Scotty. A tack-on run or two for the Twins would be nice.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:23:50 pm

Or 6 or 7 so the newbs can pitch today.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:25:16 pm

Too bad Major League Baseball doesn't play two 7 inning games for double headers.

The Twins would find themselves sitting well with those.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:26:03 pm

Let's have some abidage, Jason.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:26:07 pm

Kubel is SO due for a HR.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:26:51 pm

And it sounds like he just missed one...damn.

Let's see if DY can at least get Mauer in from 3rd.

1st pitch swinging? Of course.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:29:20 pm

Amusingly, in the break, the Hardware Hank commercial came on: "In some cases, a ballplayer needs to work smarter, not harder."

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:26:58 pm

Well, some might say Jason did his job.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:27:26 pm

I hate Delmon.

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:27:26 pm

Awesome. I leave for a while and the Twins take the lead. I <3 it.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:28:21 pm

Well, that could have gone better. Keep getting 'em out, Scotty.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:29:47 pm

I say this a lot...but this is a big inning for Baker.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:36:56 pm

If he's going to do that well when you say it, keep saying it.

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:37:17 pm

Was that big enough for you?

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:37:42 pm

Good inning Scott.

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:32:54 pm

Okay folks I'm out again, I hope that my leaving will bring more runs.

cheaptoy replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:37:08 pm

They may get more runs, but at what cost?

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:36:16 pm

Good job again, Scotty. Strong inning. Let's have a couple Twins runs this inning.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:36:28 pm

81 pitches for Light Rail through 5. It would be nice to see him go 7 rather than 6 innings today.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:38:59 pm

I think Gardy has to push him to go 7 as much as he can.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:42:23 pm

Gomez walks on 4 straight!

!!!!

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:42:45 pm

Dazzle and Gordo are basically calling for Gardy to use the B squad in the second game to give the regulars some rest. I could not disagree more. I know it's late in the year, and I'm sure they could use the rest, but the Twins cannot afford to give away the second game.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:46:29 pm

And that's why those guys are in the booth and not in the dugout.

Beau replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:43:04 pm

Ha ha ha. 4 pitch walk to Go-go

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:43:48 pm

a 4 pitch walk to Gomez? Unbelievable.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:46:57 pm

I'd be down for the Twins adding 3-4 runs here.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:47:33 pm

Do it big here Alexi!

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:47:36 pm

Is that true? Dazzle said the Orioles went through a several-game stretch when their starters were averaging ten walks a game. That doesn't seem possible. Maybe the staff as a whole could average that many, but the starters?

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:11:12 pm

Dazzle corrected himself later to say it was the staff, not the starters.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:50:14 pm

You've gotta be fucking kidding me!

Just put the damn ball in the outfield!!!

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:50:39 pm

Thems the breaks.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:50:49 pm

No way to know if that was a good call, but I think Gardy is smart not to go out and argue. We don't need to do something that might wake the Orioles up.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:51:53 pm

Jeebus, what a horsecrap ending to that inning. Wish I could have seen Span's slide, I'm not very trustful of umpire calls like that these days. Dazzle didn't seem to agree with the call.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:53:14 pm

I'm not very trustful of Dazzle's call, either.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:52:29 pm

Keep getting outs, Scotty.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:56:00 pm

And stop walking Ramon freakin' Hernandez.

cctwinsfan replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:54:06 pm

Span wasn't close to the bag and took out the 2B real nice. It was the correct call.

StatFreak101 replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:55:18 pm

I think the more frustrating thing is that Casilla failed to get any run home when he was sitting with a 3-1 count while facing Brian Burres.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:58:52 pm

Good job, Scotty. Not to be greedy, but I'd sure like to get a couple more runs yet.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 5:59:39 pm

Okay, so 94 pitches for Baker. Do you give him the next inning? Don't forget that unless you toss in a spot start he'll be on short rest in his next start. I'd say put him back out there for one more.

DK replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:02:41 pm

I think if you put him out there for one more today you'd better be willing to go with Humber or Bonser on Wednesday.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:03:52 pm

Let's see if the Twins can score some more runs before we make the decision.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:02:23 pm

I understand why they would move the Cubs-Astros game out of Houston, but why to Milwaukee? Why not some place that's not quite so much a home-crowd advantage for the Cubs?

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:02:32 pm

I like sending him out. If he can get through in 15 or so pitches he'll be alright. Just have someone warming (Reyes?) in case he allows a hit or two.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:03:05 pm

I like M&Ms.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:03:05 pm

That's the way, Justin!

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:05:08 pm

Is anyone else having problems with mlb.tv right now?

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:05:24 pm

Why could I imagine Delmon swinging at these pitches?

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:07:01 pm

And I miss another Morneau double. Crap.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:07:24 pm

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:13:08 pm

So these announcers have never seen a Twins game before between Butcher and Punto (soft U).

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:15:51 pm

As well as claiming that the Twins are a patient team with no free swingers.

Any chance of a lil' Mijares today?

davidwatts replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:22:03 pm

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:54:27 pm

The chances are increasing.

Jeff A replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:17:26 pm

I'd be okay with taking Baker out now.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:21:02 pm

Yeah, with the extra runs it's the right call.

TobaTwins replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:19:02 pm

You know your team has bullpen issues when I'm still not comfortable up 6 runs and needing nine outs. Can we just use Nathan for 3 innings so I can relax?

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:20:14 pm

Is this a BOOf! proof lead?

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:25:46 pm

Hrm. The way the first couple of batters is going here I'm not sure if it is.

New Guy replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:20:50 pm

This game is going well.

So in game 2, are we going to see the starters again or might we see some of the Twins' B-squad? Is anybody ready for another dose of Jason Pridie?

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:23:35 pm

I can only speak for myself here, but the answer is no.

twayn replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:25:35 pm

I'm assuming we'll have Redmond behind the plate in game 2 with Mauer catching tomorrow. Delmon should probably sit game 2 with his ankle hurting, his limp is pretty noticeable. Maybe give the Mountie a rest tomorrow?

meat replied on September 13, 2008 at 6:21:02 pm

Hey look at that. I ask, and the Twins provide.
