Interested Bystanding: Detroit Tigers @ Chicago White Sox

Posted by SBG on Monday, September 29th, 2008 at 12:04 pm

I took the second bus instead of the first one, allowing me to sleep until 5:30. On the way to the bus station, I heard Corey Cove on KFAN state that he wanted the White Sox to win because of the drama. Everyone is entitled to their opinion (even that dumbass), but I'm all for another day off before riding into Tampa Bay to face the Twins South in game one of the ALDS.

I don't find the Tigers club to be especially likable. Miguel Cabrera seems to be somewhat of a malingerer, but he did lead the AL in homeruns and Gary Sheffield is flat out crazy, but he's also sitting on 499 career HRs. Mags has the double hex of playing for the ChiSox and the Tigs, be he had another solid season. There's some talent on this club, they are just too good to be in last place. But, if they lose today, that's where they end up.

Chicago has all the advantages. They are hungry, playing at home, and they aren't trotting out some guy who's been hurt pretty much all year. The game has to be played though. Let's hope for the best -- a Detroit win and an AL Central Title for the Hometown Nine.

How did this Labatt's thing start? Is that a recent development? I should've been lurking longer.

After seeing almost no Twins action for the last couple weeks, now I can finally watch a relevant AL Central game. No Mauer or Morneau, but I'll take it. Although now I'll be listening to Hawk, so I may need a backup audio plan.

Last week. FTLT and brianS were talking about it I think. I don't really recall.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 29th, 2008 at 12:38 pm

You are correct. brianS mocked the Labatts, meat and I came to its defense, a trend of Labatts talk ensued.

Sadly, I am in the office until 5ish today. Which means, even in Buffalo, that there will be no Labatts for me until then.

Correct, but I plan to rectify it. I bought a case of Labatts yesterday before the Bills game. I had planned on drinking either this or this tonight but I suppose that this game kind of matter to the Twins.

Can we pay the Tigers to bean every one of their players, or take them out at home plate or 1B or something. Time to go Tonya Harding on these suckers.

I really hate puttin faith in the Tigers. On the other hand, I'm glad that this game is being played with us 1/2 game in front.

I also wonder that if the tables were turned and the Twins had to play a make up game, how many here would be absolutely convince that the Twins would find some way to blow it? Maybe since the Sox have been playing as bad as the Twins, that'll mean they'll choke. I can dream.

They come to the Metrodome and play a doubleheader starting tonight...assuming they win the first game.

Wow, can this get any more drawn out?

Can they start this game and finish next season, like they did with that one game at Baltimore?

The NL is going to have their champion while the AL is still trying to figure out who the heck's gonna win the Central.

(And are we SURE we want an outdoor stadium?

Hmm, a roof on Target Field is starting to look more and more like a good idea if the Twins plan to go far in October in the coming years. Of course, its not like other teams don't have to deal with inclement weather this time of year.

freealonzo replied on September 29th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

Hey Socaltwinsfan: I'll give you the benefit of the doubt because you are in SoCal but right now it's 65 and sunny in Minneapolis. Weather should be like this all week. No need for a roof here.

socaltwinsfan replied on September 29th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Algonad replied on September 29th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

There's no roof in Detroit or either of the Chicago fields. The weather is a little colder here but not that much worse.

I would have been fine with Carl putting the Target money towards the roof but he chose to put it in his pocket instead.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking but I think that the rain delay helps the Twins. I have this imagine in my mind of the BitchSox getting super pumped up for the game this morning and then.... rain.... and more rain.... and more rain? I don't know how much energy level actually factors into play, and I am sure this is just wishful thinking, but hey, maybe it's true?

Let's hope Jr. pulls a hammy chasing a ball on the slick grass and Floyd can't shake off the cold of sitting all day and the bullpen is tapped in the 3rd inning, and getting blown up. Then Korneko (or Thome) gets hit on the wrist, knocking him out for a day or two.

Here's hopin'

SBG, I hope next year you'll have a different service provider, because the server problems are beyond the irritating level, closer to unusable level.

In any event, go Tigers!

PS. I can't help but thinking the Tigers aren't taking this game very seriously. Seeing Garcia smiling and laughing while throwing warmup was very disconcerting.

punmanbowler replied on September 29th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I'm just pondering whether they're thinking "screw the Twins" or "screw the Sox" They're equally to blame for letting it get this far.

My ISP shut down the WGOM because the traffic was too large. I changed the page so that the sidebar is gone. The WGOM is at the mercy of a two-bit operation.

I'd offer space on my server, but not so sure it'd hold up much better, at least currently. Plus with how often I admin it, you're looking at a one-bit operation. And probably mostly zeros for that bit. All I have to offer is help, though that doesn't pay the bills or get it to run any faster.

FirstTimeLongTime
FirstTimeLongTime replied on September 29th, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Maybe I am just thinking Twins baseball here, but why are the Tigers not trying to bunt with a man on third and none out?

sean
sean replied on September 29th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

The Tigers don't have a single sac bunt with a runner on third. They have nine bunt hits, and never when someone was on third. Twice reached on error, but again no one on third. I don't think it was too high on their list of possibilities.
