Just like last year, the Wolves are 1-6 through seven games with only a narrow win at home against a crappy Sacramento team to show for their efforts. Of course, last year, the Wolves kept going and were 5-34 at one point. I don't see that because the Wolves average margin of "victory" is just -4.9 (pretty bad, but not 5-34 bad), but I can see something like 2-13 or 3-12 to start the season. Then again, the Wolves have played, the easiest schedule in the league so far (opponent's winning percentage in games not with the Wolves: .298), so don't expect that the schedule is somehow going to make things better.

Two other groups who would fit nicely next to Mogwai are Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The former being lighter and more wistful (they scored Friday Night Lights); the latter darkly brooding and ominous.
EitS
GY!BE
Eh, I always thought Godspeed You! Black Emperor was a really phony band. Phonier than Sigur Ros, phonier than the Polyphonic Spree even. I really like Mogwai though, so go figure. This concludes my Holden Caulfield moment of the day.
See, it's kind of the opposit for me. I really dig Sigur Ros, but haven't really ever gotten into more than bits of pieces of Mogwai.
Did you hear (insert Sigur Ros' new icelandic-ly titled CD here)? Curious to know what you thought of a few of the curveballs they tossed in the begining of the album.
I don't actually hate Sigur Ros. In fact I enjoy some of their stuff. But I still think they are a little phony. I had a conversation once with a musician from Iceland, and he said that in Iceland they are regarded in the same way that we regard Dashboard Confessional. I also had a really pretentious roommate in college who was obsessed with them, and that also tainted them for me.
Haha, if I let pretentious people ruin bands for me, I'd never listen to music.
Iceland also gave us Quarashi, who do they view them as? The Beastie Boys, just like everyone else?
"All morons hate it when you call them a moron." Holden Caulfield.
I can see not liking GY!BE, but calling them phony? Meh. Their live show was one of the most intense (and disorienting) concert-going experiences I've ever had. A full multi-media assault of the senses. Probably no surprise that the Walker Art Center sponsored the gig.
Then again, I like Sigur Ros, too. And the Polyphonic Spree once boasted the wonderful St. Vincent (Annie Clark) as a member, so maybe I just like phony music.
I enjoy GY!BE sometimes, it's just difficult to fit in time for them. They're one of the few bands I've ever listened to that require an appointment.
LOL. That's true. It lends itself to long road trips.
What makes for phony music? Other than Milli Vanilli, I mean.
Okay so I had The Catcher in the Rye on my mind today, and I was just itching for an excuse to use the word phony
What I really meant was pretentious. With GY!BE, it's the name, the 25 minute songs, the name, the snide attitude towards the medai, the name, the half-hearted politics, and let's not forget the name. It's also probably because I don't "get" their music, but I just think they are way too self-serious.
With the Polyphonic spree, it's just, like, I mean come on... presenting yourself as a cult? But at least they have a sense of humor about it.
As for the Sigur Ros, yeah that was a mistake. I don't have huge beef against them, but I needed a third band to strengthen my argument. I should have used The Mars Volta. They are far worse.
EitS is a nice comparison, but I have problems listening to their music. Well, listening as background, anyway. Their music is too dynamic; they have a beautiful background ambience going, then they hit you with some explosive guitar sections. I enjoyed watching them perform on Austin City Limits.
Gotta say though, between the various SBG music selections, I'm finding more tracks that I'm indifferent to than I really like, but then again if I really enjoyed everything you've queued up, you wouldn't be doing a good job. Keep up the great work.
Speaking of Austin City Limits, I caught a few songs of John Mayer on PBS over the weekend. While uncomfortable feelings of interest in the Princeton first-year may or may not have stirred in my breast as I gazed upon his work, I still think he's pretty good.
is he an example of phony music??
(and to Rhu_Ru: thanks for the compliment, I think
New Guy and E-6 really bring the variety)
