We're back up.

  • I have a back up page ready just in case things go wrong again today. FirstTimeLongTime goes Minnesota for the day.
I hope that it doesn't come to that, but this is the last game of the year, and it is better safe that sorry.

That being said, glad to have you back up, boss.

  • Ok... I have executive suite level tickets to the Wild pre-season game vs. the ChiHawks. Any idea if there is a TV in this seating area?? I have only been down by the glass in Excel. I really hope to watch hockey and baseball at the same time tonight.

Secondly, I will know more by noon or so, but I may have an extra ticket or two as I received these tickets last minute. If anyone is interested, leave a comment and I will respond by 1:00 pm or so.

  • Even ubelmann would have to agree that tonight is a must-win game.

  • Keeping up with the ex-Twins: St. Louis signs Kyle Lohse to a four-year contract.

  • Out of the Basement and back into the fold. The world is normal again. FWIW, I use bluehost, and have never had any problems with their customer service.

  • A little positive affirmation to start this morning.

We're good enough, and doggone it, people like us the Twins

  • According the the readers of tWWL, if this game were to be played in the dome, well, it wouldn't even be close

    • Ya know, it's funny, the Twins got the edge in every single poll, except the big one at the top.

If this game is half as epic as last year's Rockies comeback, we're in for a treat.

  • hey, any one seen any odds yet for tonight's game on Crazed ChiSox Fan(s) Attacks Ump(s)?

  • Some interesting stats about Danks against the Twins

His career ERA is 6.88 versus the Twins, and the 3-4-5 hitters in the Minnesota batting order have pummeled him. Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau and Jason Kubel are a combined 18-for-35 (.514 average) with seven extra-base hits against Danks over the past two seasons. If he makes it through that murderers' row, Michael Cuddyer (1.393 OPS vs. Danks) and Brendan Harris (1.315 OPS) still await.

Hitters vs. Danks with 2 strikes
    Current Twins Rest of league
    OBP .453 .261
    BA .352 .208
    SLG .463 .317

    Hitters vs. Danks' changeup
    Current Twins Rest of league
    Batting average .389 .234
    Miss % of swings 14.9 28.7
    In-play % of swings 68.1 40.8
    Chase % 38.1 39.3

    • Wow, that's crazy. I wonder if he's tipping his pitches somehow and only the Twins have picked it up.

    • The numbers are interesting, but is there any chance both Kubel and Cuddyer see the line-up in tonight's game? Considering it would probably be at DSPAN's expense, I think not. Gardy will stick with Kubel I presume, for better or worse.

Harris should definitely be in the game. I've recently been impressed with his defense at 3rd. Considering the pull-happy ChiSox line-up, good defense on the left side is useful. Unfortunately, Delmon and his roller skates in left can't be avoided.

  • Next wordpress release should make comments much easier [depending on your theme of course]. 2.7 Comments Changes. Threaded comments should be much easier.

  • So I know the Twins and Sox have been bitter rivals for a while now, but has there ever been a game like this between these two teams? One head to head meeting with the entire season literally on the line? My guess is there hasn't.

If there is a Torii Hunter/Jamie Burke type of moment, or if Gomez makes some impulsive gesture, or if A.J. has a major impact on the outcome, the rivalry could become a whole lot more heated for the next generation of players. God this is exciting!

  • 10 things sure to happen in tonight's game:
An umpire will blow a call in favor of the Twins. (Making Hawk closer to going over the edge)
AJ will make a controversial play
Griffey will hit a home run
The game will go to extra innings.
The announcers will comment on how the Twins do the "little things"
There will be countless commercials plugging "Frank TV"
Carlos Gomez will run very fast.
Matt Guerrier will come into the game at some point.
The Twins will bunt at least 3 times. (2 for hits)
Someone will make an error to cost their team the game.

10 things I'd like to see:
    Twins win (obviously)
AJ gets owned by the umps trying to do a controversial move
    Morneau dinger
    Kubel dinger
Mauer goes 4-5 (that's reasonable, right)
    Hawk announces retirement.
    Griffey hits meaningless home run.
    Gomez inside-the-park homerun
Span throws someone out at home plate
Sox make Blackburn look like Cy Young.

10 things to cause me to hurl.
    Sox win (obviously)
    Alexei Ramirez grand slam
AJ gets away with one more thing....
Umps blow call in Sox favor
    Twins blow large lead
Matt Guerrier comes in at any point
    Griffey hits GW homerun
Twins make an error that costs them the game.
    Mauer goes 0-7
Cloris Leechman wins Dancing with the Stars (not related to the game, but still makes me hurl)

    • My prediction for tonight's controversy:

-Gomez bunts in first at bat, is plunked in second at bat
-AJ is plunked, and both benches are warned
-Someone will passionately slap the plate as they score, and nerves will fray
      -A manager will be tossed
      -A bullpen will implode
-If the Twins win, Mark Buehrle will spew vile post-game trash talk about how they were the better team and the Twins are garbage
-If the White Sox win, Mark Buehrle will spew vile post-game trash talk about how they were the better team and the Twins are garbage

  • The Sox are favored tonight, and they should be, so I know we're all thinking how much it sucks to have to play this game in Chicago, but just how great would it be to win it? There's no more excuses for the Sox about losing at the dome. (And they're complaining about the Twins' home-field advantage? /dials pretend phone/ Hello, pot? You're black!)

The one thing that has me holding out real hope for tonight, (and I mean real hope, not "Well, it's baseball and it's just one game, and, well, anything, you know, can happen) is that a victory would follow the pattern for the Twins' entire season, where every time you think they're going to do it and take control of this thing, they go out and look horrible and/or lose in crushing fashion, but right when you're sure they're done and all hope is lost, then they go and win in amazing fashion.

  • If you didnt know, tonights game is on TBS. Dick Stockton, Keith Hernandez, and Harold Reynolds are on the call

  • I haven't been this nervous since:
    1) 1987 World Series game 7
    2) 1991 World Series game 7
    3) my wedding day, and
    4) every dental appointment of my life.

    • Don't forget Game 5 of the 2002 ALDS against the A's. The Twins were probably just as big of underdogs in that game, but came out on top. Blackburn is no Brad Radke, but Jon Danks is certainly no Mark Mulder. The Twins have won their last three winner-take-all games.

    • I've already warned everyone here at the HQ building that I'm on edge because of the game, so careful what they say.

My prediction for the game is that ChiSox fans will wake up tomorrow morning feeling like a VIking fan who just typed "Troy Williamson" in youtube's search.

  • So Albert Lea is all aflutter today because some TV show showed up today.

    • Forgive the intrusion, I've posted a few times on some game logs, but some of these quotes from the Sox are absolutely insane:

"You can ask Minnesota how much of a different team they are at home," Pierzynski said. "It won't be a concrete home plate like it was in Minnesota, where they can chop the ball off home plate and run. I guarantee you it will be wet [Tuesday]. They'll actually have to try to not chop it off the dirt and run.

"They'll have to get hits in the air, and I like our chances of catching them. But it's just a different atmosphere. It will be fun to play at home, especially a game that means a lot and, hopefully, lives up to the crowd's expectations."

--you mean, except when it is hit anywhere near Junior Griffey's fossilized body in CF, right AJ? Come on!

      • I'm sure the Twins are really dreading the results when they attempt to bunt on wet grass. That couldn't possibly be a problem for the Sox, could it? Especially with such stellar defenders on the corners.

Maybe Chicago's problems against the Twins this year is because they've relied solely on A.J.'s scouting reports from 2003. This team doesn't rely on chopping and running nearly to the degree that Cristian Guzman and Luis Rivas used to (and even Jacque Jones to a certain amount, but his was more flail and run). This team relies much more on bunting for hits and errors and putting pressure on the defense that way, which would be a lot more effective on a wet grass field. The only cheap hits I remember in the sweep of the Sox were bloops that fell in down the line and had nothing to do with the ballpark other than there was no wind to blow it into a glove or blow it foul.

Plus, its not like offense has been a problem on the road for the Twins. They only scored 33 more runs in home games. They allowed 136 more runs on the road than at home. So, pitching has been the difference in the home-road records.

  • I'm actually not that nervous. Maybe it's because I expect us to lose. Maybe it's because I would expect to lose to the Rays. Maybe it's because I believe our team should be even better next year. But I think I'll be fine if we get blown out. Now, if we lose a really tight game without seeing Mijares or Nathan, I'll probably break my TV, but I think Gardy will pull out all the stops in this game. I just hope he doesn't blow through the whole bullpen overplaying matchups

    • One thing I thought during last Thursday's game when Gardy used Guerrier, Reyes, and Crain early in the 5th, 6th, 7th innings, once we tied it up, I knew that he couldn't bring them in during the 9th and 10th.

Wonder if he'll use anyone like Perkins in relief?

    • I agree with all the stops being pulled. If this game isn't an early blowout, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Liriano make a relief appearance a la Santana in the 2004 ALDS.

      • I agree. You have to go all-in tonight, and if that means using starters in relief, then you do it. Of course, it didn't work out so well for Detroit with Galarrago yesterday, but that's purely hindsight. That was one ugly choke job by the Tiger bullpen. No wonder they finished dead last.

        • Yeah, once the Sox tied it up, they pretty much folded up the tents.

        • I agree with the principle of pulling out all the stops, but I don't know that using starters in relief would necessarily be a good strategy. If Slowey could pitch, he'd be starting. Who knows what we might get out of Baker on one day of rest. Perkins isn't particularly better than Bonser, and maybe not even better than Humber. Liriano is a possibility, but he'd be going on short rest, hasn't pitched in relief for some time, and has pitched poorly in two of his last three starts, so he's far from a lock to pitch well.

Granted, if Blackburn gets knocked out in the first inning, that would change things, but if Blackburn gets knocked out in the first inning the chances are that we're going to lose anyway. My thought is that, for better or worse, we're pretty much going to have to go with the bullpen we've got.

          • Christensen has this to say:

(*) Manager Ron Gardenhire said he’ll be ready to go to the bullpen early to help rookie starter Nick Blackburn if need be.

(*) It’s all hands on deck, though Gardenhire said he won’t use Francisco Liriano tonight because this is his first season coming back from major elbow surgery. Liriano pitched Friday and would be working on three day’s rest.

(*) Gardenhire said Scott Baker would be available out of the bullpen. Normally, he would throw a side session today anyway.

      • Huh, for some reason I thought that Santana made a relief appearance in the 2004 ALDS. I was wrong, he just started on short rest. But still, I won't be surprised if Gardy goes to Liriano tonight.

  • Tonights game will be on mlb tv, correct? This is my first season with the product and I wanted to make sure before I sit down 10 minutes before game time and have to run to a bar.

    • Moss

Cuddy is due. Way, way overdue, in fact.

    • That would be great for Cuddy to get a big hit in this game after missing most of the season because of injury. Interesting that the Sox are going with essentially the same lineup that scored only two runs off Blackburn (who didn't pitch well according to Ozzie). The only difference is Cabrera and Wise are switched in the lineup.

    • Yes, Cuddyer has crushed him in the past, but he's done nothing since coming back to prove that he's got his mojo back. Granted, Kubel has pretty much sucked against most lefties not named John Danks, so it's not a terrible move. But I'd rather have Randy Ruiz in there instead of Cuddyer.

  • Where's the celebratory beer spot if we win this MoFO?
