October baseball: Hoodlums @ Goats, Game 1
October 1st, 2008 by brianS
Could this year finally be next year for the Billy Goats Gruff of the North Side? The Magic 8-ball sez:
Ahhhh, sh!!!!!!!!!!1tttttt!. I had about an hour's worth of series preview obliterated by one g#$&)$*# damn accidental click of the "back" button. And I really DO need to get some actual work done today.
Frack. Uh, ok, so let's cut through the cr@p. The Cubs should dominate this series, despite Man-Ram's brilliance, decent pitching for the Doggers, and the gradual emergence of a solid young core despite Ned Colletti's fetish for craptastic veterans. Chicago's pitching is on par with LA's and their offense is way, way better. The Cubbies dominate at 1st, 2nd, 3b, SS (unless we think Rafael Furcal really is ready) and LF; and have an edge at C and CF (maybe).
A sweep certainly is possible.
tonight: dirtball specialist Derek Lowe (3.43 xFIP, 138 tRA+, 147:45 K:BB) faces off against Ryan Dempster (3.94 xFIP, 133 tRA+, 187:76 K:BB). Even in Wrigley, this could be a pitchers' duel. Should be fun to watch.
Game is scheduled to start at 5:30 central time.

I hate the back button. You couldn't recover in the Wordpress revisions log?
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 5:39:44 pm
well, maybe, if I knew what and where that was ...
the "autosave" function seems to have been turned off? I had manually saved the draft early on, then was busily editing, editing, editing and didn't bother to re-save. Then OOPS. OH, MOTHER-F$)*$#UY)! and I was toast.
Yickit replied on October 1, 2008 at 5:46:28 pm
I hate when that happens. At the very bottom of the Writing Page there is a Post Revisions Box. Not sure if this would have helped but FWIW:
[Updated: removed image because it was annoying]
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 5:52:20 pm
unfortunately, the post revision was what I in fact got reverted to when I did the back button/forward button thing. again, no auto-save to save my bacon.

"Actual work"? I thought you worked for the government.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:41:45 pm
This is California. I have to craft ways to take people's money and property and otherwise screw with their lives. It's serious business.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:50:07 pm
How does that make California's government different?
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:53:26 pm
It doesn't. But it IS change you can believe in.
In fact, we change just about every year. Believe it.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:07:12 pm
I hope the powers that be here at the WGOM won't be discouraged by the low number of LTEs today. I suspect there's a significant hangover effect from the sudden end to the Twins season. Plus, both games so far have been National League games. I think if the game logs stick around there will be more interest as the playoffs go on.
SBG replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:24:05 pm
Nah, we'll soldier on. Wow, the Nation was on fire here and at Yickit last night. Two huge game logs.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:10:52 pm
KTVK in Vermillion, SD carries the Cubs Radio Network. Suffice it to say that Ron Santo was rather pleased by the DeRosa home run.
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:05:52 pm
its so odd that the Cubs have radio affiliates in South Dakota
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:53:27 pm
I think the deal is that it's a sports station, and wants to carry baseball, but WNAX Yankton, about 25 miles west, has the Twins, and KMNS Sioux City, about 30 miles south east, has the Twins, and KSOO Sioux Falls, about 50 miles north, has the Twins, so there's no point in them carrying the Twins. So they take the Cubs to be different.
SBG replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:29:59 pm
Dodgers with a big threat here in the 3rd.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:31:55 pm
And it goes for nought.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:30:28 pm
Listening to Pat Hughes and Ron Santo makes me feel even worse about the broadcasters the Twins have.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:45:59 pm
who are the KABC guys? I was hoping for Vin.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:51:00 pm
I don't have access, but usually Charlie Steiner is one of them.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:54:29 pm
ahh, I knew I recognized that voice. The color guy sounds mighty familiar too....
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:07:27 pm
I think its Charlie Steiner and Steve Sax
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:12:06 pm
Sax has a classic radio voice.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:17:18 pm
He also plays a mean bass fiddle.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:43:04 pm
I haven't had a chance to listen to any action yet. But I'm in for the long haul.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:49:21 pm
You know, the GEICO commercial with Joan Rivers is extremely not funny.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 6:52:29 pm
You know,
the GEICO commercial withJoan Rivers is extremely not funny.Fixed that for you, Jeff A.
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:10:17 pm
I kind of like that commercial
'more knives than a Behinhanas' line makes me chuckle every time
StatFreak101 replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:03:50 pm
Why isn't Vin Scully announcing this game?
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:09:27 pm
he doesnt do Dodgers games west of Denver
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:13:40 pm
but this game isn't west of Denver...
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:17:11 pm
yeah
ermm.. east of Denver
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:13:18 pm
its a threat! bases loaded
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:14:21 pm
Dempster's laboring ridiculously this inning.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:15:04 pm
Loney Salami. tasty.
Yickit replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:15:23 pm
Oh Baby. Grand Slam!
StatFreak101 replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:15:30 pm
Grand slam for Loney!
Pinella making a mistake by leaving Dempster in the game too long.
New Britain Bo replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:15:36 pm
Loney hits a looper. Hoo hah.
New Britain Bo replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:16:42 pm
Dempster to the dumpster.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:21:13 pm
oh, my. Big inning for the Doggers.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:23:00 pm
James Loney is like a bargain-rate Derrek Lee. Similar build, similar gap power. but he's got something Derrek doesn't!
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:23:38 pm
I head out to change some oil, I come back to the Dodgers suddenly with four runs. That baseball, it's a crazy game.
New Britain Bo replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:26:27 pm
Fukudome reaches on a fluku.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:26:42 pm
Who's the other guy in the TBS booth, the east coast fellow? His accent is a bit grating to my sensitive midwestern ears.
davidwatts replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:31:22 pm
Dick Stockton, Tony Gwynn, and Ron Darling are the announcers
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:35:21 pm
Darling, yeah, him. For whatever reason, his accent is driving me slightly batty.
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:28:23 pm
Ok, kids. Have fun. Turn the lights out when you are done. I'm heading home. I might pop in later to see what's up with Angles and Argyles.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:34:05 pm
Wow, the four pitch walk to Lowe, who couldn't even seem to comfortably place his feet in the batter's box.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:53:48 pm
Manny being Manny.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:54:35 pm
Damn you, I was just about to type that.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:55:27 pm
Haha, Jon Miller says "People make fun, but that, to me, is Manny being Manny."
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 7:59:47 pm
I didn't really pay attention to it until Tony Gwynn mentioned it, but that was nowhere near a home run swing. It's impressive he even got that thing to the wall, let alone over it.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:03:18 pm
Holy crap, that was a pitch waist high down the absolute center of the plate and called a ball. Amazing.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:12:19 pm
It's too bad Jeff Samardsmshaslkas wasn't an every day player. He could have been the next Darren Erstad.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:13:48 pm
+10 punting
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:19:01 pm
Two tag attempts and a force out for a double play. That was awesome.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:34:11 pm
The Dodgers do seem to have some pretty good pitchers.
StatFreak101 replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:40:27 pm
I really like Derek Lowe.
He's a free agent this season...sign him up Billy Smith!!!
brianS replied on October 1, 2008 at 9:25:23 pm
He is nowhere crappy enough for the Twins to sign him as a veteran presence in the rotation.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:42:06 pm
I wonder what non-player/team entity Cubs fans will blame this game on.
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:46:32 pm
Whatever entity it was that caused Dempster to walk 7 guys (including all three that Loney drove in).
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:50:04 pm
Probably Bartman JR.
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:46:51 pm
How long has Maddux been pitching relief, or is he just not part of the Dodgers playoff rotation?
DK replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:51:29 pm
Jon Miller just said he hadn't appeared as a reliever in a regular-season game since 1987. The Dodgers just have four better starters at this point: Lowe, Kuroda, Billingsley, Kershaw (I don't even know if they're going to start all four guys this series).
cheaptoy replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:55:07 pm
That's pretty much what I figured. I know basically nothing about the Dodgers, though, other than they made some trade earlier in the year that some people talked about.
Jeff A replied on October 1, 2008 at 8:59:35 pm
This is the first time since Sunday a team I rooted for won.
