Keeping up with the ex-Twins:

Arizona signs Trent Oeltjen.
Atlanta removes Corky Miller from the forty-man roster.
White Sox grant Jason Tyner free agency.
Colorado grants Mark Redman free agency.
Florida signs Michael Ryan.
Dodgers grant Terry Tiffee free agency.
Milwaukee grants Randy Choate free agency.

Did Jason Tyner's revenge list just get longer? He's going to end up like the Steve Buscemi character in Billy Madison.

He's going to end up hating the entire AL Central at this rate.

Florida signs Michael Ryan.
I can't believe he was a Twin as recently as 2005. It seems so long ago to me (I guess because he got so little actual playing time and was so useless except for those 68 PA in '03), that might as well have said "Kansas City signs Jarvis Brown."

The Arizona Fall League starts today. The Twins have seven players on the Phoenix Desert Dogs:

Rob Delaney
Tim Lahey
Jeff Manship
Dustin Martin
Anthony Slama
Steven Tolleson
Danny Valencia

Also, the manager is Stan Cliburn. Go Desert Dogs!

Hey, I'll be in Phoenix for a long weekend with my oldest brother's family; sounds like a ballgame would be a good idea!

meat replied on October 7th, 2008 at 10:16 am

Phoenix Municipal Stadium is a fun place to see a ball game. I had the opportunity to see the end of spring training in 05, caught games there, and at Bankone Ballpark - BoSox vs. D-backs exhibition game to end spring training. Bring a hat and some sunscreen.

I was just sitting here, longing for the good old days when the Vikings had a real special teams unit ("special" as in "uniquely valuable", not like the "special" in Special Olympics).

Obviously why Childress needs to dress Tahi instead of Tapeh, what with his special teams prowess and all.

I'm going to start a "Free Tomas Tapeh" campaign, since it worked for Kubes.

How bad do you think FOX wants Manny v. Red Sox?

Jeff A
Jeff A replied on October 7th, 2008 at 8:34 am

Well, of course, they'd want Boston and Los Angeles even if not for that. But yeah, if it happens we'll hear about that angle roughly every other minute, even when Manny's doing nothing but sitting in the dugout or standing in the outfield.

cheaptoy
cheaptoy replied on October 7th, 2008 at 8:35 am

Probably about as badly as I want Ray-Phillies just to spite FOX.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on October 7th, 2008 at 9:20 am

I am rooting for a Sox v. Dodgers match up in hopes of Manny going something like 20-24 and the FJM guys getting to write about 30 pieces about how chemistry doesn't exist and having an awesome baseball players on your team is more important than whether or not someone is a distraction.

I've been secretly hoping for Manny vs. Red Sox (granted, as long as Manny wins) for a long time just because Manny might actually take a dump on home plate in Fenway after winning the series. Otherwise, GO TAMPA BAY!

Torii Hunter, the leader of this team, the one who shows more emotion than nearly almost any player, sat at his locker, facing the room, fuming. He kept calling himself a failure. He was a failure for not getting his team out of the first round of the playoffs again

I really miss Torii.

[EDIT] I kid, I kid.

cheaptoy
cheaptoy replied on October 7th, 2008 at 9:17 am

Considering the sound bytes I heard from him going into this series about how great it is to finally be on a team that has a chance to go somewhere in the playoffs, I don't feel all that bad for him.

Algonad
Algonad replied on October 7th, 2008 at 9:23 am

The problem with Torii is that emotion makes him stupid in big games. He tries to do too much and he ends up diving for balls he can't get to or trying to stretch a single into a double when it isn't there.

meat
meat replied on October 7th, 2008 at 10:07 am

Oh, I totally agree. I'm more than satisfied without his 'leadership' in the Twins clubhouse

brianS
brianS replied on October 7th, 2008 at 11:45 am

what's the over/under on Torii being the source for

"I didn't like [the call]," one player said shortly after the game, still in disbelief the Angels had lost.

in reference to the squeeze play??

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on October 7th, 2008 at 12:31 pm

I would guess it was Lackey, considering how mad he sounded. Torii's other quotes had him placing the blame on himself.

socaltwinsfan
socaltwinsfan replied on October 7th, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Maybe, but he certainly came through in big situations in the series, more than any other Angel. He was something like 5-for-11 with RISP including the game-tying hit last night in the eighth inning. And that was only his second-biggest hit in the posteason after his 12th-inning homer in Game 2 in 2004. In Game 1 of that series, he threw a runner out at home plate and robbed someone (A-Rod?) of a homer in a 2-0 victory. The previous year, in Game 1 Torii had an RBI triple and scored on an error in the sixth inning of a 1-0 game that the Twins won 3-1. In Game 2, his fifth-inning HR tied the game at 1-1 before the Twins gave up three in the 7th to lose 4-1.

For the most part, the Twins lost in October in spite of Torii, not because of him. The guy certainly said and did stupid things, but he was a good player that was all-out effort all the time. I try to remember both when it comes to him. He was my favorite Twins player in 2001-03 and I certainly wish the Twins could have kept him (but not for that price) and I don't have any problem with him taking the offer from the Angels. Who wouldn't? Of course, I don't like it when he tries to spin it that he came to play for the Angels because it gave him the best chance to win. If the White Sox or Rangers offered him that much, he would be playing for them.

This makes me wonder, though, if the Twins would have made the playoffs if Torii signed with the Sox? I'm not sure when the Sox got Carlos Quentin and Nick Swisher, but it seems like they would have waited on acquiring other outfielders until they knew if they had Torii. They also would not have been able to trade for Griffey because of all the extra money tied up in Torii.

SBG,
Did you still want my "one man's opinion of top300" to put up somewhere on the site. I have it updated through the end of 08 stats. I just need an email address to send it to, the one I tried yesterday (SBG@stickandballguy.com) bounced back at me.

That was my favorite part of the story.

Aaaarrrrghh.

I was checking the statistics on my personal blog today, and I noticed that a potential employer had been accessing it. A potential employer who I interviewed for today. They repeatedly accessed the post in which I explicitly mention their company and all of the reasons why I am not sure I want the job. They also read the posts in which I illustrated my poor work habits. It was intended to be read only by my friends.

They had found the blog through my private facebook profile, which was apparently and very mysteriously no longer private. So not only did they read my babblings about their company, but also probably took a gander at a few of the countless photos of me on facebook where I am drunk off my ass. I had thought the interview went very well, but now I have no idea. There is a great difference between how I present myself professionally and how I appear on facebook, which is why I fucking made my profile private. I realize that it is foolish to assume any sort of privacy on the internet, but I am still furious that facebook somehow changed my privacy settings and I have deactivated my account until I figure out what happened. I feel humiliated.

I am sorry for ranting here, but since my facebook account is deactivated and they are obviously reading my own blog, I have nowhere else to do it.

Ack. Sorry to hear this, NG.

and I apologize in advance for the following "old guy" response. Cover your tracks, people. Don't post sh!t anywhere that can be linked back to the real you relatively easily unless you are ready to bear the scrutiny.

I've read horror stories similar to yours before. Makes me glad that I don't really understand (or "get") Myspace/Facebook, etc.

which reminds me. I actually live in Antigua and work a taco stand. My real name is Clyde.

New Guy replied on October 7th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

It's okay, I realize that if I hadn't thrown my information out there then there would be no problem. I take almost full responsibility the situation, but I am still boggled as to why they were able to see my facebook profile. I had a little incident a few months ago in which my information was maliciously used by the jealous ex-boyfriend of a girl I was dating, and after that I made absolutely certain that it could only be accessed by my friends. I have no idea what happened.

Thankfully my blog post was fairly benign, and besides a few dozen old pictures of me drinking while underage, there is nothing patently offensive on facebook. But I still feel violated by this, and frankly I feel less inclined to take the job now.

A similar thing happened to me. I had an article posted on Buffalo.com, an employer where I write about the Buffalo Bills, which linked to my own Buffalo sports blog. . My boss discovered the article on Buffalo.com and said, "you had better not be doing that shit at work". That totally f's up my whole blogging thing. Now I have to write while I am drinking. Drinking!

yeah, that's crappy news, NG, especially how this company could misconstrue the humorous postings and photos (of someone looking only somewhat similar to you) and assume they were you. Your outstanding work ethic is well-known in The SBG Nation.

and bS, ditto that. I haven't even considered MySpace or Facebook; I already have plenty of friends, and they don't have to register at a website or anything.
