It's Runner daughter's HS homecoming tonight. The homecoming tradition began at Mizzou, at which the largest volunteer blood drive is held.

brianS replied on October 10, 2008 at 11:15:20 am

very cool. Much better than my alma mater's tradition, which involved bawdy skits.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on October 10, 2008 at 11:42:21 am

I'm guessing it makes the drinking later in the day hit that much harder, though.

brianS replied on October 10, 2008 at 12:14:38 pm

depends on whether you are going for volume or impact.

Still plugging away at the other site.

Any hockey fans out here in the WGOM? Anyone have any predictions for the upcoming season?

E-6 replied on October 10, 2008 at 9:22:04 am

The NHL declares bankruptcy by April.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on October 10, 2008 at 9:35:04 am

Damn declining Canadian dollar.

brianS replied on October 10, 2008 at 11:21:12 am

maybe China will cash in some of its $2 trillion reserves and buy the NHL. And everything else.

I'd say that the Sabres have a chance to win it all, but that would be like pointing out that we all have a chance of winning the lottery too.

Kidding aside, I have to say that I am a conflicted hockey fan, Buffalo is near and dear, but I have to hold loyalty to the Wild. So here's to a good season for both.

brianS replied on October 10, 2008 at 4:35:43 pm

speaking of the NHL, apparently some fans are rather Def to its charms.

davidwatts replied on October 10, 2008 at 4:34:58 pm

I hope the Wild suceed, but they didnt seem to do anything in the offseason

What is awesome is that the NHL Network will carry the Hockey Night In Canada doubleheaders every Saturday. I think I will save the $150 for the NHL Center Ice Package, because those were really only the games I watched

Am visiting Budapest for a couple of days.

Walking along the Danube, we came up to a place where there is a monument along the river, which is a bunch of pairs of shoes along the edge of the cement barrier by the edge of the river. In 1945, the Arrow Cross execution brigade shot and pushed some of the few remaining Jews that hadn't been deported to the concentration camps, into the river. People were forced to removed their shoes before they were shot.

We visited the synagogue in Pest as well, the 2nd largest in the world (largest is in NYC). There I read that in Hungary, in 1942, there were 724,000 Jews - of these 600,000 were killed in the Holocaust.

E-6 replied on October 10, 2008 at 9:36:05 am

A bit more powerful than a bunch of Snoopy statues, no?

Love it when you do your travelogue monologues, Bo. Keep 'em coming--and safe passage.

(And a belated Gamar Chatimah Tovah.)

New Britain Bo replied on October 10, 2008 at 10:31:52 am

Lets just hope that the French don't invade St. Paul, capture all of the Snoopy statues, then take them back to Paris, melt them down, and make an obelisk out of them, meanwhile lying about the number of Snoopy's they actually captured...*

(* - reference to the Battle of Austerlitz, where the Austrian and Russian reportedly had 318 cannons. The steel obelisk in Place Vendôme in Paris was made from melting down 1200 cannons that were reportedly captured at Austerlitz.)

SBG replied on October 10, 2008 at 10:46:00 am

Or invade Minneapolis, steal E-6's paintings, and display them in one of their museums.

E-6 replied on October 10, 2008 at 10:49:04 am

I would gladly assist the French for that cause. ;)

I just got back from Des Moines yesterday. While I was having dinner at a local English-style pub, I was involved in a conversation in which a Cubs fan was admonishing a Yankees fan for the Yankees buying all those championships. It was pretty sickening. They did both manage to voice some respect for the Twins organization of this decade, at the very least.

And the Fuller's Pride off the beer engine was mighty tasty.

Watching FC Barcelona thugs in a trip-fest over Deportivo (3-2 in 2nd). You'd think you were watching hockey. Ref barely bothering to put yellow card back in pocket.

These boyos know how to back-foot-flick, foot plant, sandwich, clothesline, head-butt, ankle-gouge, knee-scrape with von-Raschke 'Who Me?' finesse.

The Phoenix Desert Dogs fell to 1-2, losing to Peoria Javelinas 6-4 yesterday. Jeff Manship started and took the loss, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits in three innings. He also struck out three. Anthony Slama pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, giving up no runs and no hits.

Danny Valencia went 1-for-5 as the DH. None of the other Twins' position players got into the game.

Jeff A replied on October 10, 2008 at 1:41:20 pm

I thought this was kind of an interesting take on the players' association and free agency.

CC to bS: The beer is in the mail. Let me know if it gets there okay, I'm pretty sure that I overpacked it, but I've had some lost in shipment.

brianS replied on October 10, 2008 at 3:15:34 pm

mmm, beer!

I played hookey from work today to brew my 30th Birthday beer, a bourbon barrel porter (recipe stolen and modified from the northern brewer BBPorter). This stuff smells so freaking good, I just don't know if I'll be able to wait the 5 months until it is ready.

davidwatts replied on October 10, 2008 at 5:32:11 pm

happy birthday!

davidwatts replied on October 10, 2008 at 4:38:13 pm

Anyone watch The Office last night? I am hoping the show will pick up the pace a bit.

davidwatts replied on October 10, 2008 at 4:40:31 pm

hey, there is a baseball game this afternoon!

4-2 Phils in the 3rd

davidwatts replied on October 10, 2008 at 5:31:30 pm

Man Ram still in 'beast mode' 3 run HR to get the Dodgers within 3, at 8-5

Jeff A replied on October 10, 2008 at 6:00:15 pm

Joe Buck is apparently channeling StatFreak. He just said this would be a big inning for the Phillies pitcher.

Jeff A replied on October 10, 2008 at 6:49:43 pm

I guess it shows my age, but it does not seem right that Sandy Koufax should be seventy-two years old.

Jeff A replied on October 10, 2008 at 7:04:04 pm

Wow. Lidge walks two to bring the tying run to the plate.

Jeff A replied on October 10, 2008 at 7:09:20 pm

But he strikes out the next two to close out the game. Philadelphia 8, Los Angeles 5. Philadelphia leads the series 2-0.

speaking of winter sports, the T-pups have signed David Harrison.

He's got to be an improvement over Jason Collins and Calvin Booth, right?? Right??

No one put the coffee on this morning?

Nice little article about former Twin Charlie Manuel and his mom. Oh, and happy birthday, Emily Deschanel.
