The Desert Dogs made it two in a row, defeating the Peoria Javelinas 3-2. Twins' prospects had little to do with the victory. None of their pitchers appeared in the game. Steven Tolleson was the only Twins' position player to get a hit, with a first inning single. He stole second, but could not advance past third. He was 1-for-4 on the game. Dustin Martin was 0-for-2 with a walk. Danny Valencia was 0-for-3, striking out twice.

Joe Buck's level of disinterest might be comical if that world series happens.

Had a scary incident yesterday. A fire broke out near the freeway as we were driving home, forcing the freeway to be closed. As we were waiting and watching the fire, about 100 yards ahead on the right (we were in the left of three lanes), we looked behind us and saw flames about 100 yards behind on the left. The freeway was lined with bushes on both sides and the Santa Ana winds were blowing south/southeast (we were going north).

It appeared they got a handle on the fire behind us and we could see them working on the fire ahead of us and it appeared to be dying down, however, we were stopped next to a semi and some people from other cars came up to us and told us the fire was right next to our car on the other side of the semi. So, with cars parked on the freeway as far as we could see in either direction, we decided the only thing we could do was abandon our car on the freeway, because if the wind shifted much at all, the bushes on our side could catch fire and we could be trapped in the middle.

My wife and I got our sons (ages 3 and 6) out of the car. There was a hole in the bushes that we could squeeze through and climb up to the southbound side of the freeway, which was closed and a couple feet higher than the northbound. We walked to the other side and as were trying to figure out what we were going to do, the smoke started blowing over us, so we decided to head south to the next exit and go to a metrolink train station. Fortunately, the smoke cleared after only a couple minutes, so breathing wasn't a problem. As we got near the exit, we could hear the police over loudspeakers announcing to the people at the back of the traffic jam "Turn your cars around and get off the freeway!"

My wife called friends of ours on her cell phone until she could find someone to pick us up at the train station. Our friend picked us up and then took us to dinner at a Jack In the Box. After dinner we tried to see if we could get back on the freeway to retrieve my car, but we were eventually told by a policeman that the cars had been towed and the freeway was still closed, so I will be calling the highway patrol later this morning to find where my car is and what condition it's in. Fortunately, we have full insurance and it's the car we're still paying on (I also have gap insurance).

So, how's your day going?

Jeff A replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:18:32 am

Wow. I'm sure you'll have some hassles, but at least it is not as bad as it could have been. Glad to hear all of you are okay.

meat replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:24:02 am

Jesus, I thought I had a bad day yesterday, but my day pales in comparison. I'm glad to hear that you're alright, and that your family is safe too.

brianS replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:41:43 am

SBG replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:45:32 am

Wow. Scary stuff, especially having the family in tow. Cars can be replaced, but not family. Glad to hear everyone's okay.

socaltwinsfan replied on October 14, 2008 at 12:41:34 pm

Update: The car is fine, but it will cost $230 to get it back today.

The photos I've been seeing are surreal. Like this one:

Glad everything turned out OK, socalfan.

brianS replied on October 14, 2008 at 4:30:12 pm

Oh, that's what that is? I thought that was a picture of the McCain-Palin campaign first bailout bill, err, Seligula's plans for an All-EL World Series!

Algonad replied on October 14, 2008 at 4:51:41 pm

Where is the political police when you need them?! :)

brianS replied on October 14, 2008 at 8:19:31 pm

though at least one of the major fires here was thought to be of suspicious origin

Thank God they've ruled out Zippo products.

Wow scary day. My day went pretty well today as I volunteered to help build a playground in New Britain with Chad Greenway. I am so sick of mulch!

Yet another Citizen who's car has been towed today. NBB went to local west-end civic assoc. meeting tonite, listened to cops talk about how much they've improved everything, then went back to where the car was parked. Nada. Car-ski vanishmo.

First tho't was - stolen. Then realized I had parked in a dubious B-of-A area, and that it was likely towed. An hour and a half later (and $209), I reclaimed my Subaru Forester (they're not just for lesbians anymore, fellas) and got back home. Sigh.

On a different note, does anyone out there own a Wii, and if so do you own MLB2008 or any other mlb baseball type game?

Whiffers replied on October 14, 2008 at 1:00:37 pm

MLB 2k8 is apparently a terrible game. I'd check out the Power Pros games instead--I have the original one and it is my understanding that Power Pros 2008 is even better. Don't be fooled by the cartoonish appearance, it plays a solid game of fun, realistic baseball.

I'd suggest checking out this link from the SBG Library, for a start.

btw, special thanks to Phoenix for providing free (but unsecure) WiFi at Sky Harbor airport. Very convenient.

Keeping up with the ex-Twins:

Atlanta grants Corky Miller free agency.
Philadelphia grants J.D. Durbin free agency.

In traditional Columbus Day fashion, a few friends and myself went to a local watering hole to have ourselves a few cold ones and watch some afternoon hockey. About half way through the game a young man in a White Sox tee shirt ponied up beside me. He promptly ordered a Coors N/A.

I don't know what I found this so amusing, but that, coupled with a the Sabres crushing the Islanders, totally made my day.

I don't know why I decided that was worth sharing, but I did.

davidwatts replied on October 14, 2008 at 5:10:27 pm

well, days like this makes me want to take up drinking
a person was let go and I have been shifted from full time to part time with a drastic reduction in hours. I guess the only thing saving me was a bunch of people stuck up for me
:(
at least I have my health

SBG replied on October 14, 2008 at 5:38:44 pm

Bummer. Hang in there, dw.

Jeff A replied on October 14, 2008 at 5:44:29 pm

Sorry to hear that. Wish there was something to say to make it better. We're thinking of you.

brianS replied on October 14, 2008 at 8:20:49 pm

that sucks, dw. We're pulling for you.

E-6 replied on October 14, 2008 at 8:25:25 pm

Sorry to hear that, man. Cue up "Better Things". I know you know the words.

Couldn't find a version by the Kinks, but these guys do a pretty nice job.

davidwatts replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:06:48 pm

thanks guys. I'll survive. I have a couple different options I am going to explore. It just stinks. This economy is killing the radio business right now

Here is the title track

twayn replied on October 14, 2008 at 9:18:06 pm

Ditto on the sucks, dw. I was downsized about 6 years ago and was unemployed for more than a year. There's nothing fun about it. Except maybe the pity sex, but that only lasts for a couple of days.

FirstTimeLongTime replied on October 14, 2008 at 6:20:47 pm

Here is a list with Buffalo and Minneapolis right next to each other. Albeit a bad, bad, list to be on.

While coming into StL airspace this evening, I was watching out the airplane window the "Hunter Moon" in the sky, and it got me to thinking: Wonder what Torii is up to?

Sorry, the LTE form is closed at this time.
