I know we have a number of lawyers around here: I don't know how many are trial lawyers. But I thought this was an interesting article from the UK about how young people, raised on the internet and other new media, have a hard time serving on juries because they are so unused to getting information by sitting and listening to people in a question-and-answer format.
Some of the article is the standard talk about these kids today, but what I found interesting was to speculate on how the way we do trials may need to change, moving away from the standard "put someone on the stand and question them" to something else, and if so, what would it change to. I'd be interested to know what you think.

Phoenix scored three runs in the eighth inning to defeat Mesa 4-2. Steven Tolleson was back in the lineup, so if he was injured, it was apparently minor. He struck out the first three times up, which could indicate an injury not fully healed, or it could indicate rust, or it could just be one of those things that happens in baseball. When he did hit the ball, he hit a two-run triple in the eighth, driving in the go-ahead run, and scored an insurance on a sacrifice fly. Danny Valencia was 2-for-4. Dustin Martin was 0-for-3 with a walk. Rob Delaney pitched a perfect eighth, striking out two.
Aragua fell to Margarita 7-5. The only Twins pitcher to work was Jose Mijares, who gave up a leadoff single, but nothing else in an inning of work.

SBG, I now understand why all politics was removed... Pos has an apolitical brief about what it means that Obama got elected. There was no endorsement (although maybe a bit of enthusiasm), and the comments blow up. People on both sides. I'm not sure which side's Hitler comments were removed, but I'll guess it was someone who voted my way.
I felt that with the smattering of politcs at this site, that all commenters kept the appropriate level of decorum, but if a writer like Pos can draw such a dialog, maybe it's not so farfetched that it could happen here. (Note: I do not remember all that went on in the Palin thread that preceded the ban.)
So, in retrospect, I say "good call" even though I disagreed at the time.
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 7:23:44 am
Here was my thinking on the whole thing. I knew that I would not be able to hold my tongue because of how I felt about the topic. There are tons and tons and tons of places for people to talk about this stuff. I didn't want the good stuff happening at this site to be mucked up because I'm sure a lot of people felt as strongly as I did and not everyone was in agreement. So, I took the stuff offline.
The result has been that the other site has had nearly the readership that this site has had. Not quite, but reasonably close. What does that mean? Well, it means that this site has had the lowest readership over the last month that it has had in several years. I've neglected it in favor of the other place. But, I probably also saved it by not having people's feelings rubbed raw. People aren't all pissed off at each other. So, I think that's good. I would like to extend a thanks to Yickit, who has run the other other site. That was mighty good of him to do that. I peeked in there a few times and even dropped a couple of comments.
So, now, the election's over and I'm pondering what to do with my two sites. Do I close up shop on one and fold the content back into this one, or do I try to keep both going and try to establish a readership at the other site independent of this one. I haven't decided. What I will do is get back to what I've done around here for the past 4 plus years... that is, shoveling half baked crap about sports, movies, food, beer, and whatever else comes along.
brianS replied on November 7, 2008 at 9:55:35 am
the stuff about beer is half-fermented crap.
cheaptoy replied on November 7, 2008 at 10:07:52 am
Speaking of half fermented crap, my soon-to-be-dry-hopped pale ale (flavored with cascade hops, they're back!) is about that fermented. Also, my dunkleweizen and roggenbier have officially been deemed tasty and certified for review. Expect samples of all three in about one month when that pale is ready. And I do, of course, apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.

What I want to know is why people are giving brianS free beer and NOT sending their best buddy SBG any.
cheaptoy replied on November 7, 2008 at 10:14:34 am
Because I didn't make enough for the whole class.
brianS replied on November 7, 2008 at 1:02:40 pm
because I am the Court Taster. We can't subject our Fearless Leader to that sort of risk.
Jeff A replied on November 7, 2008 at 10:32:39 am
My preference, for whatever it's worth, is that you continue to keep the political stuff out of this site. However, it is your blog. Whatever you choose, I'll still be around. If you bring the political stuff back, I'll simply absent myself from it and continue to comment on ex-Twins and winter league Twins, 70s music, and whatever else may catch my fancy.
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 11:07:10 am
I think I'm in agreement with that.
...Adding -- it's not really just my blog anymore, anyway. I own the domain name and provide the platform and storage space, but most of the content is generated by others. By virtue of paying the bills (and founding the thing), I have a little more say than anyone else, but there are a lot of stakeholders in this thing besides me. It should be known that before I decided to pull the politics, I consulted some of those stakeholders to determine what I should do. I ultimately made the decision, but the decision I made wasn't the first thing that I was going to do.

Is this new math? What am I missing here?
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 8:25:26 am
Half baked crap, I tell ya!
I think the percentage is about right, but obviously something is wrong.
socaltwinsfan replied on November 7, 2008 at 8:53:05 am
51 was the total number of SB against. It was really 29-of-80 for a 36.3 percentage. At least according to B-Ref. Joe C of the STrib had Mauer 18-of-69 (26 percent), which seems awfully low.
nibbish replied on November 7, 2008 at 9:48:01 am
He could conceivably be removing pickoffs from the overall formula, since there's been 11 lopped off of each side. They get reported as a CS, but Joe really has very little/nothing to do with them.
Rhubarb_Runner replied on November 7, 2008 at 11:08:28 am
Do the catcher's throw-behinds to first get recorded as a PO? In that case, Joe would have something to do with them. Can't remember Joe pulling this off last season, though.

c.c. to meat: got the catalog--thanks. Haven't had time to peruse it fully yet, but will this weekend. Your piece brings to mind Philip Guston in some ways. Love to see more. (And thanks for the print.
)
If I send something to the Museum addressed to you, will you get it?
meat replied on November 7, 2008 at 1:19:32 pm
you betcha- I always had a thing for phil, some of my paintings are heading back in that direction...

Found it amusing that the home theater system that I stream audio through while I work displays "BS ENHANCE" when you push the bass enhance button. Depending on what I'm listening to, it's surprisingly accurate.
btw, E-6, sorry I haven't posted your book review yet; apparently the mail at sbglibraryAThotmailDOTcom isn't receiving mail or something. B^P
btw II, SBG, Eric (Pirates of the Prairie) is a fan of the other site, fyi. I'm waiting for his business to slow down as winter approaches before hitting him up for an interview.
E-6 replied on November 7, 2008 at 11:26:29 am
What with the tumbleweeds that have been blowing across this site of late, I thought, "Why bother?" Prairie dogs don't read.
Just run another children's book review.
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 11:32:40 am
We're gonna fire this engine back up! I'm going to threaten to publish all of the incriminating photos I have of ubelmann if he doesn't start writing again! I'm going to bemoan the state of the not even mediocre T-wolves all winter!
E-6 replied on November 7, 2008 at 11:48:51 am
Promise?
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 12:01:03 pm
Yep, promise. Talked over the whole website thing with Lucy a while back. She thinks I should keep going, so I guess that means I will.
Note: I can be bribed with free beer.

I still have a few of the Election IPAs hanging around....
meat replied on November 7, 2008 at 1:26:15 pm
hint, I just need to know where to send them...
FirstTimeLongTime replied on November 7, 2008 at 5:07:21 pm
If you have an email, where I can get your actual address, I would be more than happy to some postage out for such an item.
Jeff A replied on November 7, 2008 at 12:30:12 pm
Keeping up with the ex-Twins: the Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros have signed LaTroy Hawkins.
FirstTimeLongTime replied on November 7, 2008 at 5:06:02 pm
It looks like Cuddy might have some trade value after all.
Would unloading Cuddy's contract be worth a player whose obp, on the road, was .303 last season?
Hmmm....
Sorry about the absence guys, I have just needed a month of so off.
davidwatts replied on November 7, 2008 at 6:39:28 pm
I am surprised that Cuddy name is even being floated around. Cuddy is a Twins guy, in the corproate sense. Nice guy, does good community stuff, and toes the party line. With that, I figured he was untouchable

I'll do my best to summarize the important things you've missed.
-Kris Kristofferson could kick Kenny Loggin's ass...physically and musically.
-Chris Coste got a ring.
-An "other" site was launched...another "other" site countered.
-Lil' miss smalls learned how to self feed (which makes smalls sad because I become less and less necessary for her every day).
-Meat became a bootlegger.
-T-pups started their season...blah blah blah YAWN!
-JeffA is an expert in geography (among other things).
-Punnery has been at an all time low (well, at least for the amount of time I've lurked).
If anything else happened I haven't noticed.
Is it "lake effect snow season" yet?
SBG replied on November 7, 2008 at 7:07:41 pm
So did I!
