2008-09 Game 6: Wolves at Blazers
November 8th, 2008 by GreekHouse
<GreekHouse>The Wolves kinda sucked last night, losing in a blowout to the Kings. However, I'm not quite as down about it as a lot of the other Wolves fans. Yeah, the Wolves defense wasn't great and there were quite a few easy baskets, but there were also tons of difficult jumpers that kept dropping. When a team shoots almost 55% from the field, it can rarely be attributed to just bad defense. Usually it's a combination of that and teams making a higher percentage of shots than they normally would.
On the other side of the ball, the Wolves managed to shoot just 43% from the field. Given the tremendous disparity in FG%, you'd think the Wolves would have lost by 30 points. Yet they only lost by a dozen. I'm not going to say the Wolves played well, I'm just saying this game gets a big "meh" in my book. Teams are going to have shooting nights like that, and when they do, all you can do is tip your hat to them.
So now the Wolves are 1-4 and some people are already crying and throwing in the towel for the season. The 1-4 looks particularly bad given their strength of schedule, but I'm also giving the start a big "meh" in my book. People (myself included) came into this season with lofty expectations for this team, so the start is somewhat of a reality check. The Wolves won 22 games last season, so even a much improved team will still kinda suck. On the plus side, Love is even better than expected and it seems that he has nowhere to go but up as he works himself into better shape and adjusts to the size and speed of the players in the NBA.
Tonight the Wolves play another team which looked to be much improved this year. Unfortunately for the Blazers, Oden when down literally minutes into the NBA season. But this Blazers team is good and should likely give a tired Wolves team a thorough ass whooping tonight.</GreekHouse>
<SBG>Last night was my first look at the 2008-09 Wolves and I'll confess that I wasn't watching all that closely, but what I saw made me feel encouraged about Kevin Love, but I'm less excited about the overall 2008-09 Wolves. Last year was pretty tough to take, what with Our Guy being shipped out to the eventual World Champions, while the Wolves were a punching bag. The time to mourn has passed now, though, and it's time to think about whether this team can build something worth watching. So, I promise not to despair like I did last year.
The problem with promising not to despair tonight is that the Wolves are playing a young and strong divisional rival in the Portland Trailblazers. We've helped them get to where they are (Foye for Roy), but all is not Rosy in Portland. As GreekHouse mentions above, last year's first overall pick Greg Oden got hurt the first game of the season and is out. That's discouraging, of course, but I wouldn't say that a sprained ankle is the end of the world. However, it's possible that he might not be the kind of player that the Blazers thought he might be. At least, that's what the Sport Guy thinks. I should say that relying on Bill Simmons for talent evaluation is a risky, at best, proposition, but sometimes it's clear that a guy can't play. I didn't see Oden play at all in the preseason (last night was my FIRST NBA action of the season), so I can't say. But, if he's not all that, the Blazers may not become the behemoth that I thought they might.
Portland is favored by eight points. I think they'll cover.</SBG>

I would watch the Wolves to watch Kevin Love play. He reminds me, in a way, of the Twins youngins in that they seem very likeable (Delmon Young excluded) and have more talent than many expected. Then again, I don't follow the NBA all that closely anymore, so maybe the talent expectation is higher for Love than I thought. Either way, it seems to me the Wolves are set up pretty well for the relatively near future with Mr. Love and BAJ. Foye is pretty tough to watch though.
Of course, I've only got three more days on the free NBA League Pass preview, so I won't be able to watch them after this weekend. But, if the OSU - Texas Tech game becomes a blowout, I'll probably switch over.

Looks like I'm not getting any TV feed of the game here. You guys are on your own.

Looks like the problem has been solved and the game is back on. I'm here for you guys.

I hope you were just in time for the Mark Madsen sighting.

I was!

Foye/Roy...IN OUR FACE tonight!
With Foye getting benched in favor of Telfair in the starting lineup, are the Wolves close to admitting Foye isn't an NBA-caliber PG? I still haven't seen anything from him to make me change my perception that it just isn't going to work.
I really like watching Love play, he's a heady player out there and you can tell he's already making some adjustments. It should be interesting to watch Love against Aldridge tonight, that seems like a very tough matchup for the rook.

I think that you're right and the Wolves are giving up on him as a PG. He looked really terrible there the first few games, but has looked a bit better the last couple.

Wow, I had no idea Portland's defense was this bad. They're basically just giving the Wolves points.

Hmm, for a minute there, it was just showing the half time going on in the stadium. No sound or anything, just the human bowling going on. I think I could get behind that sort of halftime show.
GreekHouse replied on November 8, 2008 at 10:23:15 pm
League Pass does that sometimes. During some games, I don't get any commercials. I just get shots of the arena. This seems to happen the most with Raptors games, which might have something to do with it being a Canadian station--or it could just be a coincidence.

Not a bad first half for the Wolves, although as poorly as Portland played, I would have liked to see a bigger halftime lead. Jefferson has missed a lot of easy (for him) shots.
Whiffers replied on November 8, 2008 at 10:37:04 pm
Thought the end of the half was really disappointing, letting the Blazers get 4 unanswered points to drag themselves back in it a bit.
The Wolves are going to be a tale of two teams this year, I think. Very fun to watch on offense with the potential for the pieces to fit together really well. But the defense will be the opposite end of the spectrum, nothing really fits together defensively and D hasn't been Wittman's strength either.

Ready...
Set...
MADDOG!!!
Whiffers replied on November 8, 2008 at 10:50:30 pm
I was about to write a "Mad Dog, WTF?" post. He was buried on the bench, thankfully, for the first few games, right? I think he's more valuable as the Jack Haley memorial towel waver than he is on the floor...
GreekHouse replied on November 8, 2008 at 10:57:41 pm
I've actually read a lot of Wolves bloggers basically begging to see a bit more Maddog in the games. It has been well documented that Jefferson's numbers are better when he has a defensive center next to him, and Maddog is the closest we have. We'll likely see Collins get some time when/if he gets healthy.
Whiffers replied on November 8, 2008 at 11:02:46 pm
I always discount Mad Dog's D since his awkwardness and lack of athleticism leads to fouls, turnovers, out of position play, etc.
You're right though, he's the closest thing to a defensive center on the active roster.
GreekHouse replied on November 8, 2008 at 11:05:41 pm
I'm not a fan of the way Witt is using him tho. He's using him as a sub for Jefferson, rather than along side him. We had Foye/McCants/Gomes/Smith/Maddog out there for quite a while. I'm not sure that 5 would even be competitive in a D-League game.
Whiffers replied on November 8, 2008 at 11:17:35 pm
But would they get frozen out of a Pulley League game like Ndudi Ebi?
I think you speak for all Wolves fans when you question Wittman's usage and substitution patterns.
BTW, which Wolves blogs do you recommend?

Canis Hoopus By SBG Nation citizen Stop-n-Pop and Twolves Blog are the ones I read on a regular basis.

Thanks, really like the little bit I've read at Canis Hoopus and it looks like it has a fairly active community.

Jefferson really taking over for MN down the stretch here. If only the Wolves could get a stop...
Whiffers replied on November 8, 2008 at 11:29:10 pm
He is something to watch on the offensive end of the court.
Nice of 45 to flip away from the game for the last FT and the end of the game...

Wolves lose yet another heartbreaker. This feels eerily like the beginning of last season.
