Cup of Coffee: November 14, 2008

November 14th, 2008 by SBG

It's not exactly Connie Mack territory, but if Gardy manages the duration of his current contract, the Twins will have had just two managers over almost a quarter century.

It should be noted that former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher Preacher Roe passed away this week. Known for his country charm and a wicked spitball. He was 93.

twayn replied on November 14, 2008 at 12:07:52 pm

A couple of interesting notes about Roe. He finished his career with a .110 batting average, and the same number of career home runs as Jason Tyner. Also, his Wikipedia entry notes that after a game in which he left the mound in the second inning, he was quoted as saying, "Sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you." The Coen brothers used that line in The Big Lebowski. And now you know.... the rest of the story.

Jeff A replied on November 14, 2008 at 2:33:57 pm

The oddities of history: from 1952-54, the Brooklyn Dodgers pitching staff had Preacher Roe and Ben Wade.

I hope no one considers that politics.

Algonad replied on November 14, 2008 at 3:09:45 pm

I think it's only politics if they were opposing pitchers, not on the same team.

AMR replied on November 14, 2008 at 2:37:52 pm

But to be like the Big Lebowski, you have to pronounce it:
"Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar eats you."
I don't think I ever understood that until I got the DVD (I had the VHS so long) and I watched it with the titles on.
I thought it had something to do with workhorse bits, which are kindof like bars, right?
I feel stupid now.

brianS replied on November 14, 2008 at 3:56:06 pm

From The Source: "While coaching high school basketball after the 1945 season, Roe fractured his skull in a fight with a referee."

Apparently, Roe's sermons didn't focus on Matthew 5:5 or 5:9.

brianS replied on November 14, 2008 at 3:58:12 pm

also, according to his Source bio, there's a Twins' link!

On December 8, 1947, the Dodgers got Roe, and infielders Billy Cox and Gene Mauch in exchange for pitchers Hal Gregg and Vic Lombardi and outfielder Dixie Walker.

Mauer seemed to get a lot more press for MVP from the mainstream writers than he did in 2006 even though he also won the batting title and beat out Jeter, which seemingly allowed Morneau to beat out Jeter for MVP. I'm guessing Pedroia will win it despite losing out on the batting title. His defense at second was overrated (see Gold Glove voting) a bit and he was given a lot of props for "intangibles" on a playoff team. I think Morneau, Youkilis and Mauer will round out the top four in some order, although Carlos Quentin might sneak in there despite his lengthy time on the DL at the end of the season. Of course, I thought Jeter was going to beat out Morneau in 2006, so who knows. I really don't think Morneau will get it this year because of his second-half side which coincided with the Twins' slide, although the biggest factor in that slide was the bullpen.

Phoenix scored four runs in the sixth and six in the seventh on its way to a 15-6 victory over Scottsdale, lenthening its division lead to six games.

No Twins position players appeared in the game. Tim Lahey pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two. Rob Delaney pitched the last two innings scorelessly, despite giving up four hits.

Aragua scored three in the sixth and three in the eight to defeat Magallanes 10-6. Carmen Cali started the seventh and lasted only a third of an inning, giving up three hits and a run. Jose Mijares pitched the last inning and a third perfectly, striking out one, to get his fourth save.

You bring up a great point, SBG. I really remember the run of short term and semi-short term managers, from Rigney, Quilici, Mauch, and on through the revolving door of the early 80's, and there's something to be said for having a stable coaching staff. Even MORE to be said about a stable coaching staff that is lead by someone whom is considered to be among the top managers in the league each year.

I think the Pohlads have shown a lot of loyalty and patience with their baseball operations.

So I got offered a new job this afternoon. With the facility I currently work at less than two months from shutting the door, this is a huge relief. I'll be making a good amount more now, as well, so that'll help with those medical bills.

Also, Brian, if you want some homebrew samples, let me know. I have three batches that have been judged acceptable by me that I can send you for review: Dunkelweizen, Roggenbier, and Schwarzbier. Also, I'm dry hopping my pale ale, which should be consumable in about 3 - 4 weeks.

I am here to serve, cheaptoy. Congrats on the job offer and what can I do to facilitate a transfer of liquid assets? you can reach me at jeebusismycatcher@gmail.com.

Word to Meat: I haven't forgotten you. I just have to carve out some time to get to the post office.

cheaptoy replied on November 14, 2008 at 5:54:28 pm

Thank you. I'm pretty excited about this opportunity because its a little bit outside of where I thought I would be at this point. This is more geared towards the "corporate"/management side of things as opposed to a strictly mechanical engineering type of position. Hopefully, it'll lead to some even better things.

Then again, as long as it gets me a good enough income to be able to continue brewing and bowling, I will be a happy man. There's definitely something to be said for hobbies that you are deeply in love with, as far as overall personal happiness goes.

Jeff A replied on November 14, 2008 at 7:06:17 pm

congrats on the job offer

the market is tough out there

cheaptoy replied on November 14, 2008 at 6:12:04 pm

Thanks.

It is tough out there. I was starting to get a little worried that I was going to have to move back to my mom's house. That would have required some serious pride swallowing, although it also would have allowed me to go to more Twins games.

davidwatts replied on November 14, 2008 at 6:28:01 pm

I am doing the 'moving back to my parents house' thing
it will be temporary though..well..I hope

it will be nice to be home for more than 4 hours at a time during the Holidays though...so yay for that!

cheaptoy replied on November 14, 2008 at 6:55:15 pm

It would have been a much easier thing for me to do if I didn't have a fiancee that doesn't always see eye to eye with my mom. For us, it might have been pretty long term, because I'd have had to move there until I sold my house. Luckily, I can keep the house and not worry about all that.

Would have been free food, though, and probably free booze too.

Top Jimmy with a nice article today about Carleton football and tomorrow's "big game" between Carleton and St. John's for the MIAC title. D-III: the way college sports should be played.

E-6 replied on November 14, 2008 at 5:20:20 pm

the way college sports should be played...

By slow, white guys?

brianS replied on November 14, 2008 at 6:18:50 pm

HEY!

When I was there, we had a fast, black guy! And an Asian guy!

More seriously, I'm in favor of amateur sports being left to amateurs. What passes for "college" sports -- in the revenue sports, anyway -- these days is hardly that. It's professional sports with loose affiliations to sponsoring educational institutions. they should just stop pretending. I've got nothing against universities sponsoring sports clubs as business enterprises, but pay the players and stop pretending that they are anything other than poorly compensated employees.

at the D-III level, at least in the MIAC, the players really are students first, athletes second.

cheaptoy replied on November 14, 2008 at 6:40:19 pm

I'll have to go ahead and agree with that.

I was watching the news yesterday morning, and they were talking about a highly recruited basketball player out of Madison that was committing to Marquette. Now, I could be wrong about how he got them, but this kid had gigantic diamond ear-rings in each each ear. His dad had a matching pair as well. Again, its possible this is a very well-to-do family (although his dad works for UW-Madison, position undisclosed), but they sure looked like the type of "gifts" that come from "fans". (boosters.)

E-6 replied on November 15, 2008 at 10:50:01 am

I was just messing with you, doc. I agree with your assessment of the NCAA's arch hypocrisy.

That said, Division III athletics are of interest to me only when a family member is involved.

brianS replied on November 15, 2008 at 10:52:36 am

I was just messing with you, doc.

notice, I said a fast, black guy....

funny, because it was true.

and hey, it bothers me not at all that nobody outside of friends, family, and a few alums cares about D-III sports. The games are for the players, not for the fans. The fans are just gravy.

Having the stadium full of fans is great. It pumps up the players' egos. But I didn't play sports in order to strut in front of the fans. That was just a side benefit. I was perfectly capable of getting girls on my own ;-)

Mesa put up a crooked number in each of the first five innings as they trounced Phoenix 15-7 Friday.

Only two Twins appeared in the game. Anthony Slama pitched a perfect ninth inning. Dustin Martin was 1-for-3 with a double, a walk, and an RBI.

No result from Aragua is yet available at this writing.

Jeff A replied on November 15, 2008 at 11:53:19 am

Zulia scored three in the fourth and three in the eighth to defeat Aragua, 7-2. Carmen Cali continues to have a low ERA while not pitching all that well; he started the seventh and gave up two hits in two-thirds of an inning, but was bailed out by the next reliever. Bobby Korecky pitched the last two innings, giving up a run on two hits and a walk.

The used car salesman whose in charge of MLB is now lobbying the IOC to put baseball back into the Olympics. He promises that if they do, MLB will figure out a way to get the best players there. I didn't bother linking to the article because, despite the fact that it's fairly lengthy, it really doesn't say any more than that. It's at mlb.com if you want to see it.

I would hate that. The only way you could do this is if MLB took at least three weeks off during the regular season. Thus, everything we've heard for over a century about the integrity of the baseball season would be wiped away in an instant. I do not see any way this is in the best interests of baseball, although I'm sure it won't happen unless the owners are making a buck out of it somehow.

Rhubarb_Runner replied on November 15, 2008 at 4:46:37 pm

He won't be able to get the best players there, because the Olympics has a drug testing policy.

at least 2 more years of John Gordon on the radio

I figured he was done after last year. The first 3 months of the year, he sounded 'off'. I mean, he misses plays and mis pronounce/mis place players and all that, but it was really bad the first part of the year. It will be interesting to hear who will replace Gordon for the dozen or so games he is going to miss. Studio host Kris Attebury? another broadcaster? Dazzle? (ye gods)

Jeff A replied on November 16, 2008 at 3:15:48 pm

I'm not that disappointed that Gordo will still be around. For one thing, I expected it. For another, Gordo has gotten to be kind of like that goofy uncle you have who has his quirks and will say and do some odd things, but means well and really is a pretty nice guy if you can look past that stuff.

I hope they let Attebury replace Gordo. I think he does a fine job with the pre- and post-game shows and I thought he did a good job the couple of games they let him fill in this year.

davidwatts replied on November 16, 2008 at 5:47:02 pm

I like the 'goofy uncle' analogy.

Personally, I like listening to Gordo. He has been describing Twins games to me every since I started to follow the Twins back in the late 80's (he came in the booth in 1987)

Rhubarb_Runner replied on November 16, 2008 at 3:41:28 pm

You know, Kris doesn't have the best voice for radio (a little lower register would be better), but he sure does seem to have some insight that the current booth is sadly lacking. I could certainly get use to him. And I don't think he has a lawn, let alone be upset when someone was on it.

Phoenix scored a run in the top of the first inning Saturday. Unfortunately, they had to play eight more innings, and Mesa defeated them 8-1. No Twins pitchers were used. Steven Tolleson again did not play. Dustin Martin was 1-for-4 and struck out twice. Danny Valencia was 0-for-3.

The news was better in Venezuela, as Aragua scored three runs in the eight to defeat Caribes 6-4. Luke Hughes was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Bobby Korecky appeared with one out in the sixth inning and Aragua leading 2-1. He promptly gave up the lead, giving up three runs on three hits in a third of an inning. The runs were unearned due to a two-out error, but that's still not good. Jose Mijares pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up only a walk, to get his fifth save.
