Leon Redbone “Melancholy Baby”

From The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, circa 1980-ish.

"Diddy-Wah-Diddy" after the jump... Another one from Johnny's show.

  • For a real treat, on the Elf soundtrack Leon sings a duet with Zooey Deschanel on "Baby It's Cold Outside"...especially apropos this morning.

  • I love when a performer is able to do something completely different and have some success. These days, it seems like even the acts I like are mostly cookie-cutter soundalikes. Mr. Redbone went a completely different way, and made it work.

But I still don't know what diddy wah diddy means.

  • Leon was my Dad's favorite artist. One of the last one-on-one outings I had with my father, before he passed a few years back, was attending a show Leon did up here in Alex. I took my Dad to cheer him up, and actually really enjoyed the show myself. Mr. Redbone puts on a great show!

I saw Leon at First Ave back in 1984 or so. Had free tickets, wasn't even that interested in going, but went anyway. Glad I did. He put on a great show.
