This Date in Twins History: April 11

1961 The Minnesota Twins played their first game after moving from Washington and they won it in style with a 6-0 victory at Yankee Stadium against the defending AL champions. Bob Allison hit the first Twins home run (giving him the first run and RBI) leading off the seventh inning off Hall of Famer Whitey Ford to break a scoreless tie. That was all Pedro Ramos would need, as he tossed a three-hitter to earn the first Twins victory, complete game, and shutout. Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew fittingly had the first Twins walk and single.
2007 The Twins score four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie with the Yankees and give Ramon Ortiz the victory in the 5-1 win. Joe Mauer's single scored the go-ahead run off Kyle Farnsworth.

Not Twins related, but a couple of other things that happened in baseball history today:

1907--New York Giants catcher Roger Bresnahan wore shin guards for the first time in a major league game.
1966--Emmett Ashford became the first black umpire in major league history.

That certainly was an auspicious debut, as the 1961 Yankees lost just 4 games all year by as many as 6 runs! And two of those were 10 run losses to the expansion Senators. That 1961 Yankee club was an awesome club, finishing 109-53. They had a couple of guys that could hit it over the fence, too.
