Twayn, if you go to"edit post" and click on Cup of Coffee in "categories" it'll put our hot beverage where we always find it. ;)
Hunh. So I felt lost and confused for a reason. That's a nice change of pace.
Some birthdays for today:
John Henry Lloyd (1884)
Roy Parmelee (1907)
Lew Krausse (1943)
Greg Wells (1954)
Tony Phillips (1959)
Darren Holmes (1966)
Jacque Jones (1975)
It looks like another former Twin fill be heading to Buffalo
I wonder if I can ask questions along the lines of "how did your beard get so awesome?"
This is going to be a running "thoughts from the press box" thread for the citizens. First off, holy crap, the amount of detail available to members of the press is unbelievable. For example, Mets pitching prospect Jonathon Niese has a 13.50 ERA in the 4th inning this season. This is much worse than his ERA of 0.00 in the 3rd.
I always think that those press guides are crazy. (I believe that twayn linked to all of the MLB press guides in yesterday's CoC.) At the first Wild game I went to, I lucked into seats right behind the visiting penalty box, and someone inside the box handed us a thick packet that (I think) was the press guide for the game. All kinds of ridiculous splits for the game. Those splits can sometimes help to tell a story, but I think that too often they are expected to be predictive.
I tend to agree, especially when the stats only give the information for 14 games. Regardless, it is pretty cool.
Lastings Milledge has _elmon range in left field.
It's definitely oak allergy season here; yesterday both Runner daughter and I hit the Patanol for puffy and itchy/runny eyes. I don't have the congestion that she has, but that still didn't make it any easier to sleep last night.
I got the official letter acknowledging my acceptance to the Tamarind Institute. The pork chop pushed me to accept, and now we're gearing up for her move to TX and my move around the corner to a smaller apartment.
While I'm sure that the next two semesters will be difficult I'm positive that we've made a wise decision. I'm very much looking forward to learning the skills and art of lithography, but it's bittersweet, I'm having a hard time thinking of what life will be like with my partner 'n crime being in TX. There will be several opportunities to visit, free (!) skype video phone, and a month off over christmas to live together again. I'm excited and she's excited, I think that's all I can ask for.
fwiw, one of my best friends in the academic business did the split-screen marriage for several years. His spouse had a tenure-track job at UNH when we hired him out of Dook at Illinois. It was a great day when Illinois found a position for her, and an even better day when they each got tenure there.
so, there. a positive story to hang your hat on!
Absence makes the heart grow fonder. Hey, it's the best I got. ;)
(What's the new avatar? Hardly recognized ya?)
that, my friend, is the Tamarind print shop, aka litho press #2.
Speaking of bitter brews, my shop is doing a beer tasting next Thursday evening @ 730pm. Cellars, just north of the mall on Co. Rd. C and Snelling.
speaking of less-bitter brews, I've been hot on the cold-brewed coffee bandwagon of late, using my press-pot.
I use about the same amount of ground coffee as normal, fill the carafe with cold water, cover w/plastic wrap and let sit overnight (at least 10-12 hours, but even better if a full 24) on the counter. I then heat by the cup in the microwave.
Even with mediocre beans, this makes a smooth, tasty cuppa. The NYT piece is a little breathless, but not altogether inaccurate. Chocolatey and fruity notes come out of the brew without the often harsh notes that go with a dark roast.
The only thing missing is the aroma of fresh-brewed coffee. Not as strong, nor as acidic as regular french press coffee. But compared to the drip stuff the Mrs. makes with exactly the same beans, waaaay better. And, since I'm the only one drinking the stuff so far, a pot lasts me about 3 days (I refrigerate it after pressing).
My ex-coffee bar swears by cold press in the summers. It keeps about a week refrigerated. There's a lot of flexibility - try playing around with the coarseness of the grind, the exposure length, and the amount of coffee used and you can get some very different flavors from the same cup. It's a great way to draw some of the bite or acidity out of lighter roasts.
Basically, +1 bandwagon member. Cold press is nice.
and while I'm in confession mode, I apologize for dissin' the Mrs. yesterday in the game log. She made a very tasty frittata for dinner last night. :-)
baseball notes: I saw a big chunk of the Giants/Snakes game last night. Lincecum was dealin' (12 Ks, 1 BB, 5 hits in 8 innings). Wicked fastball in the mid-90s and an UNhittable changeup. The only thing between him and a shutout was a grooved fastball to Doug Davis in the 5th, who sent it back up the middle for an RBI single.
SoCal Jr. had the highlight of his Little League career so far last night, a line drive over a drawn-in infield for an RBI single that sparked a five-run Rays rally to tie the game with the Indians. The hit came off his own coach because the pitcher couldn't throw a strike to him, but it was still plenty thrilling for him.
The rally ended at five runs because Farm League rules limit innings to five runs, and because it was just after 7 p.m., they could not start another inning, so the game ended in a tie. The Rays are still in first and the Indians are in second place, so it was not a good day for the Indians.
+1 rally cap, socal. I'm guessing he'll remember that first one for a long time.
Among my earliest, clear baseball memories is from playing pickup ball at my elementary school yard. It was neighbor kids, mostly my brother's age (he's 4 years older). My brother, for some reason, couldn't play so they needed another. I got stuck in right field and made a "look what I found" catch on a fly ball, despite being solidly afraid o' the ball.
We added a new member to the family today, Abigail the cat:
It's turning into a frickin petting zoo around here.
Very cute! I think the photo is missing "I CAN PEEZ HEER?" on it, or somesuch, though
Ha, I thought about that after I posted it. I'm a little slow witted this evening, though.
Crazy eyes on that kitten. Nice addition to the family. I'll have to post the pictures of my completed brew kettle tomorrow, the new addition to my family.
A brew kettle is a nice addition to a family. Its the pet that takes care of you.
something pretty neat for you music fans. if you do a search on Google Books for the term 'Billboard', it will pop up the mighty big book 'The Billboard Book of #1 Hits'
Today is a day on which a lot of people who were born went on to have long careers in baseball:

CC to FreeAlonzo--I am also an intermediate level tennis player and am always looking for new partners here in the cities.
R.I.P Bea Arthur. We were at a taping of "A Night at the Improv" in the 80's that she MC'd -- she can read from cue cards with the best of them.
So I'm an idiot. I think I've been eligible for a property tax refund the last three years and haven't claimed it. I think I was filing incorrectly. Anyway, at the urging of a friend, I redid my taxes, and I'm getting back $140 this year and $109 last year! Sadly, I can't go back and do 2006. In honor of this good fortune, though, I am taking all of you here out for an e-buffet. E-steaks and e-beer, all on me.
I'll have an e-stout. Or six. Congrats on your e-piphany, Beau.

I can't believe I missed this film!!!
It's comforting to know that the Minnesota National Guard is on top of things.
