It sure beats having Tony Batista at third

Not exactly a walk in the park

In hindsight, the Span triple kind of looks like the game giving us the finger. Summing up Lookout Landing style:

Biggest Contribution: Jason Kubel, +48.1%
Biggest Suckfest: Matt Guerrier, -38.2%
Most Important AB: Kubel HR off Zumaya, +38.3%
Most Important Pitch: Crain 2-out, run-scoring, tie-breaking balk, -32.0%
Total Contribution by Pitcher(s): -54.6%
Total Contribution by Lineup: +104.6%

So it's kind of like the pitchers lost the game, but the hitters got that win back and then won another game to finish the day out.

I noticed the 104.6% contribution by the lineup earlier and was quite amused by it.

Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
      Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
      Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.

  • And the Tigers hitters won a game, then their pitchers lost it and then lost another one

  • brianS

that graph should go to eleven.

So, the most important pitch wasn't even actually a pitch.

  • I'd say the odds are 3:1 that the Twins manage less than three hits in today's contest game probable loss.

  • I can't help but notice that Granderson's WPA was .623 last night. I'm assuming that WPA assigns him all the credit for Crain's balk?

    • ubelmann

Yeah, plus a +23% for the triple preceding that and in the 5th he got about +13% on one of the most generous runs you'll ever see (walk, SB, WP, WP.) WPA's not really the brightest bulb in the batch, but I think it's fun to look at after games to see which events were the most pivotal.
