Starters:
Francisco Liriano (2-4, 5.75 ERA; 93 tRA+, 4.96 xFIP)
vs
Phil Hughes (1-2, 8.47 ERA; 49 tRA+, 6.91 xFIP)
Hughes last three starts:
| IP | R | SO |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 0 | 6 |
| 4 | 4 | 2 |
| 1.7 | 8 | 0 |
I think this means he's going to last about a third of an inning and give up 12 runs. With -2 SO.
Neither Hughes (37.2 GB%) nor Liriano (38.5%) are much of a groundball-type pitcher so some souvenirs should be expected. This is Hughes debut at Yankee Stadium!!!!!! (the one that Ruth not-so-sorta-kinda built) as well so... hmmm.. I got nothing on this. He is perfect at home though!

It's the House that Ruthless Built.
I just noticed something: the Pick to Stick does not award any points for walks. What the hell?
Walks are for wussies who can't hit.
You don't use the Stick to get a walk.
But you lose points for fielding errors. You don't use your stick for defense. I call shenanigans on the damn game!
sean passes Trend Analysis 101!
I might point out that Liriano is perfect in his starts against the Yanks, too.
This is true. Passed 101 but failed 102 :(.
Do Dick and Bert dislike each other? I noticed they're sitting like three or four feet apart. Is that normal?
It might have something to do with Bert's "I <3 to Fart" t-shirt.
"Crowd" is a relative term, Dick.
Happy birthday, Justin!
the house that Mountie tore down
Glad the first one goes to a Twin at least.
That's the way to celebrate.
I was just thinking when I read Jeff's b-day list how great it would be for him to celebrate in that fashion.
Hopefully he'll celebrate a couple more times.
I'm going to call that a prediction, and give you +1 so far.
Wow...Kubel is nailed if that is a called strike three. I don't agree with the run&hit there in this situation
I knew I liked Phil Hughes.
I'm liking where this inning is going!
another completely needless jump by Jeter
JETER WITH THE AMAZING JUMP THROW
That's one thing I'll give to Hugh's credit: he does have a good curveball.
Not to go all Stat Freak here, but I could just feel when Punto got to 3-1 that the next line would say "In play, out(s)"
he knew he was getting a creampuff, and he couldn't even hit it hard
Going Stat Freak would involve a string of four letter words followed by "game over. season over."
There is a certain amount of offensive ineptitude that I can bear when I consider Punto's defense, but where is the line?
And if Punto plays almost every day, why isn't Gomez?
According to fangraphs.com Punto is 0.5 runs above replacement. Gomez is 1.2 runs above replacement.
Delmon is 7.3 runs BELOW replacement. That's why he has 90 plate appearances and Gomez has only 62. Or something.
They spent all that money on a ballpark, and they can't even figure out how to get a radio feed from it?
thats exactly what I was thinking when Attebury butted in
Good evening, chaps.
So here's my new dilemma. Do I go high quality in MLB.tv and sacrifice the thirty seconds lag time? Or go low quality but "live"?
Low quality if you want to celebrate with us live
"Low quality ... with us"
Goes without saying.
teed that one up for bodly. And it's outa here!

I'd take the lag, but that's just me.
That was sweet. Take a powder Johnny Damon.
that was ball three; this ump has been all over the place
Uhhh... I have a-roid on my fantasy team, but I'd happily take -2 points for a GIDP.
That works too.
Was Damon just arguing balls and strikes? Anything more exciting than that?
strikes, specifically. He was okay with the balls
Was that play as exciting as Gordo made it sound?
I don't know about exciting. It was close, though. Enough for Girardi to come out
Not really. Getting out of the inning was exciting, but the actual play wasn't that great.
A close play at first, nothing more.
Heh, MLB Network guys were showing some highlights from the game, then started talking about the bases being loaded with A-Rod up. The quote "lets enjoy it together" was uttered just in time for him to strike out. I must say, I did enjoy it with them.
Well... F-Bomb is doing this one the hard way.
I love Phil Hughes.
Ground-rule double? What, are they playing in the Dome?
What is it with the Twins and ground-rule doubles?
Especially in Yankee Stadium. Don't they know everyone's hitting home runs out of here?
That's not Twins baseball.
who is doing radio? I don't recognize either one of these voices....
Today's choice:

Its made using gruit instead of hops and is very interesting so far. It's definitely some new flavors for me.
I've had the gruit at Magnolia's in SF twice. Once good, once, not so much. Weird stuff to the modern palate.
Nick Punto is going to get a hit.
Eh, the sac fly is good enough for me, all things considered.
It would have been a hit with Damon in left field, I guess I forgot to compensate for the ejection. Yeah, that's it.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, Gomez actually walks (that's nice) and its juiced with one out. On the other hand, Punto is up.....
Here was my pre-game prediction for Hughes:
Hugh’s line: 4 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 6 BB
Er... *Hughes' line
Wow, that has the potential to be an amazing call.
Close, but no cigar. Here was my prediction for Liriano:
Liriano's line: 6 IP, 3 ER, 8 H, 6 K, 3 BB
Already a walk under, but he is getting the job done so far tonight.
Kubel would have been nailed with a decent throw by Cabrera
jeez, the radio guys with a New Guy call™ !!!
I'm going to start collecting royalties. What did they say?
They were calling a line-drive double for DSPAN2 down the line.
Bremer also called for a double
Spantastic!
ack! what I just said in the wrong thread! Awesome.
Ready, aim, SPAN!
D-SPAN with the howitzer!
Gunned by Denard Span!
Save big runs with Denard!
Mountie X2!!!!!
Those watching, what happened in the Cano at-bat? According to Gameday, the pitch was practically off the screen on Mini.
Evening Citizens! Storms here, so I think the Cards game will get rained out. On the bad side, my router & DSL modem aren't on the UPS, so it could be a long night of recycling power to them. On the good side, a buddy from church invited me to tomorrow's game, and it could be close enough to fist-bump Pujols on a foul pop.
My ears are playing tricks on me; it sounds more like Dick-n-Bert on MLB Audio.
Sure looks like the new Yanks Stadium induces BBs, too.
ahh, yea, that does sound like Bert, now that you mention it.
I don't ever get to see the local TV broadcast team, so I don't know what Dick sounds like.
ditto. I recognized Bert, and extrapolated Dick.
Happy birthday, Justin!
Ho My!! Twin Homers for your birfday!
Good ol' Justin.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOR-DUDE!
Happy, happy birthday, Justin!
Dazzle, it wouldn't have hurt you to sound just a little bit excited, or at least interested.
I think Dazzle is interested, but watching a game and calling it at the same time is so difficult for him, that using inflection would probably just come out as gibberish
where are you getting Dazzle? He's not on the TRN broadcast on mlb.com as far as I have heard.
PRAISE JEEBUS!
how did this get way up here?
He's on TRN. I don't know what feed you're getting, but I have Gordo and Dazzle, just like unusual.
Mountie, you are a keeper
Justin go BOOM!
Whooo, Mountie!
I could stand to see more of the Dude getting his due returns for all those years he hit line drives straight into people's gloves.
Any idea why Crede went out?
My Choice for tonight:

Wow, you must be really thirsty!
This stuff tastes like beef jerky.
Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I like beef jerky, but beef jerky flavored beer?
In this case, that's a great thing.
Its really good. It just tastes smokey.
Well looks like the width of 80% was unnecessary there. Eh.
gotta use tighter width discretion when the image is a tall one like that.
that's SMOKIN' big.
I loves me some rauchbier.
Indeed.
That's a lot of beer.
i love smoked beers, though.
You can make that stuff at home, you know. Just put a little Old Style in a hookah and have at it.
Man that just sounds wrong, ruing a good beer like that.
I joak. Never had a smoked beer before, sounds like it might be tasty.
They are mighty tasty, but you have to be ready for it because they're very strong flavored. Yickit's up above is an excellent example if you're looking to try one.
twayn, if you like beer, you owe it to yourself to explore a bit. Rauchbiers aren't for every palate, but they are fun and interesting. If you see a bottle of the Alaskan Smoked Porter, buy and try. That's a great beer, and it's not sooo smokey.
I've had one or two rauchs that did taste a bit like somebody had dumped his butts in a keg cup of Budweiser. Not pretty. But most of the products are, if not "subtle", at least somewhat restrained.
I don't think we get that around here, but New Glarus briefly came out with a smoked porter that was excellent. Sadly, it was one of their one-off beers.
Good beer? He said "Old Style". How could putting that through a hookah, or a septic system, for that matter, make it worse?
I joak, too. Although I do enjoy an Old Style when I'm particularly broke.
that's a dog with style. Dog Style.
So you're saying pour it back in the horse?
Ugh, for saying they aren't going to be another east coast bias'ed channel, these MLB guys are slobbering on the Jeter pole just as much as anyone.
I'm not liking the sound of this inning for the F-Bomb. Thank goodness for the double play.
That's what $180 million will buy 'ya.
Weird. No commercials tonight either. We're getting booth chatter in between innings (albeit not much of it).
yeah, Twilight Zone audio, but I'm hoping the Twins' results match, and it's a blowout for the good guys.
who taught Punto how to bunt?
He's a great bunter, given the right kind of infield (and defense). Now, that head-first slide, on the other hand...
He's a great bunter, given the right kind of infield (and defense) and a conveniently, belt-high or lower pitch down the middle.
Man, I step away to wolf down three pancakes and I miss a Punto bunt? Really?
I love how Dick responds to Bert's comments: total silence.
Ugh...I hate it that Span draws a hard-earned walk and Tolbert is behind him
Span is having a great game.
and Tolbert looks clueless again
He does seem very unsuited to bat 2nd in front of the best friggin hitter in the league at the moment.
What Happened to Rat Boy! Gameday says injured back!?
My thoughts upon seeing Gameday's message about Crede and an injured back:
"lower back tightness".
I think Harris might have had a different reaction...
I hope it's not serious, I've been liking Crede. fangraphs.com has him at 9.3 runs above replacement. Considering the suckhole that 3b has been since Koskie left, that's wonderful. But if it requires a stint on the DL, I'd like to see them call up Luke Hughes. He's hitting .283/.379/.540 in Rochester. His glove is nowhere near Crede's level, but watching him during spring training, his D wasn't as bad as I expected.
He's crushing lefties .417/.462/1.042 4 homers in 24 AB.
tightness
Come on, Frankie, just get out of this inning and leave the game in the hands of our extremely capable bullpen.
Ho-hum
Joe Pauer!
That was a beautiful swing, Mauer. Dinger number four tonight.
PRIOR TAKES ONE DEEP!
Mauer Pauer kills lefties!
He's gotta be juicing!

Just don't tell Selig.
Hey, was that a slightly pulled ball?
that sounds uncomfortable
I'm really glad Mauer started doing what we wanted him to do.
Nice. A recording of the Kate Smith GBA instead of the Ronan Tynan thing.
Homers like that could turn Mauer into a major power hitter and even more of a superstar. If he can drop the bat head on the low and in pitch and drive it to right, right-center instead of putting it on the ground ... wow!
Did anybody see that guy's beard? Holy Mauer, was that thing real??????????????
He just got back from a deserted island. Or possibly Jonestown.
Or a ZZ Top concert.
Is there enough of a lead for a Crainwreck?
I certainly hope so. I'm going to drink, though, just in case.
Negatory.
Is it just me that finds it striking that four of five runs tonight are via solo homeruns? I mean, it is New Yankee Stadium, but still...
I think three of the homers are doubles in the Metrodome
That's why they've already broken ground on New New York Stadium.
Good grief.
D-SPAN what was that? :(
I don't believe what I just saw...
Cripes. Span really misplayed that. Delmonesque.
oh, cr@p. How did Delmon Span pull that off?
Atta boy.
Seriously?!?
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Damn.
Ya gotta catch the ball, Nicky.
Tough play with the runner sliding into you like that, though. I'll give Punto a pass on that play.
Please tell me that it was at least close on the throw to home...
about a second and a half late
I don't know if they pitched around Rodriguez or if Crain just couldn't throw it over, but if it was the former, I disagree with it.
That last pitch was right down the middle, letter high. Crain couldn't believe he didn't get the call.
It seemed pretty obvious Anderson told him to pitch around A-Rod, because the first two pitches were sliders low and away and nothing was really close. In this ballpark, you can't keep walking people and expect to get away with it. A-Rod's hitting .136 or something like that. Challenge him!
Swisher's going to fit right in with the Yanks, pouting about every called strike.
MLB just cut to the game, and I can't believe Swisher had any issue with that second pitch being a strike. Also, he manages to look like a D-bag even without facial hair.
I can't take it any more. Gotta go pick up the Girl. Save us Joe Nathan. You're our only hope!
That was sure a lot of activity for only one run.
Iced lard in that boy's veins.
Nice :)
whew! 8 walks and none have scored. wow. I wonder what the record is for that.
You can only win for so long when you play Russian roulette.
looks like its 11
done twice, last done in 1970
Did someone say d-bag:?
+ 1 singles hitter.
Good god, he looks like Don Rickles there.
Holy crap, good call.
I'd rather listen to Don Rickles show.
What started all this?
Wha happened?
Throw was up the line and Gomez ran into Texiera's arm basically. He was bitching that Gomez was out of the baseline or something, but he most certainly was not. The Cano came over, Girardi came out, Gardy came out, blah, blah, blah.
Tex angry at Gomez for allegedly running inside the line. Whatever his faults, I love how Carlos gets the opposition worked up for no apparent reason.
I'm no lip reader, but I'm pretty sure Gomez told Texeira to "Shut up." Ha!
He's certainly no AJ in that regard.
Haha, they just showed it on MLB. That was just a shitty throw. Gomez was running right on the frickin line.
I agree, but AJ was/is a jerk, intentionally. Carlos is more like a six-month-old puppy who doesn't know where he's going next.
That's what I was getting at. Both pissing people off with very different methods. For what it's worth, I find Gomez's method to be far, far more refreshing and entertaining.
Right. I agree with you and I agree Gomez is more entertaining. But I liked AJ as a Twin and I appreciated what he did with the Sox. But, full disclosure, Esa Tikkanen was my favorite hockey player. I like the agitators, I guess.
I wish I could say I hated AJ when he was a Twin, but I didn't. (I never met him, either, so maybe that helped.) Definitely hated him as an insert-team-he-played-for-here, though.
I was living in Chicago a couple years ago and got to see a lot of the Sox games. He does his job.
I know, but I've been to Chicago twice, and absolutely hated both experiences. So, I have an irrational hatred of all things Chicago.
clearly, ct, you've never been to the Clark Street Ale House. That's a part of Chicago worth loving. Bell's Two-hearted Ale on cask. Mmmmmm.
Mark, STFU. Gomez did nothing wrong there.
What a load of Yankee bullshit.
They lead the league in whiners. Again.
Multi-millionaires are delicate.
Gomez should have done something classy, like try to slap the ball out of his glove or something.
Or stick a needle in his ass.
Not smart, Harris.
Harris!

That is beautiful. Can we save that for _elmon plays?
Absolutely.
I'm thinking you'll have plenty of source material for this one.
Span walks! Yes! Here comes Tolbert!
YAY! TOLBERT! YAY!!!!
Nice of Gardy to put an out between his two best on-base guys. Very sporting of him.
If I were Span, I would leave a bag of dog poo in front of Gardy's door for every day that turd hitters like Tolbert and Casilla have to hit behind him until a real frickin hitter gets put in that spot.
I'm no Tolbert apologist, as if one exists outside of his extended family. But who bats second? I think this lineup is the Twins' best defensively on the team right now, but that leaves Tolbert, Gomez or Punto, 'cause Gardy's batting Mauer third regardless.
And therein lies the problem.
Why not Cuddy? He's walking quite a bit lately and is hitting a whole lot better than Tolbert/Punto.
Really? Cuddyer at the two? I guess I never considered it. That leaves you with Tolbert, Gomez and Punto at seven, eight and nine, and not much balance.
But considering Gardenhire's tendencies, I think the Twins are stuck with those three, none of which provide any confidence.
Yeah, I wasn't really thinking about balance. I was just trying to suggest someone that wouldn't send Span (or Mauer) into a blind rage because they'd score less/drive in fewer runs.
The best option, I suppose, would be to find a better 2B option.
Agreed.
I'm going to petition that "Here's a drive..." be removed from Gordo's narrative. Even if he was right, there's gotta be something else he can say sometimes.
That's like telling Arthur Fonzarelli he can't say "Aaayyy".
Tolbert is struggling at the plate.
Why can't we have a decent secondbaseman!
At least he's not taking into the field with him. His defense has been very good.
This, I agree with. I'm definitely more comfortable with him out there than Casilla, with the way he was going. (then again, I'm not manager, so what do I know.)
we traded him to the Yankees
...then he got dirty with PEDs.
...and lobbed hot dogs
We have one. Gardy won't start him.
Harris? He doesn't seem like a typical two hitter either.
Were we talking about a two hitter, or a #2 hitter? Because Tolbert hits like #2.
Again, agreed. I'm just saying options are limited.
Go ahead and hit him, JoJo. Make sure it's a fastball.
15 BBs in this game, wow.
And none of them have scored (yet). Apparently "Walks will haunt!" doesn't apply in the new stadium. Weird.
Very strange.
Yeah, Gardy, but the entire month of April you had a 2-run lead in the ninth maybe twice.
What the hell.
Some poor D in the outfield tonight.
Ruh-roh. Feller gets an in-the-parker, and now sitting at 3rd without a throw by us. Tex the tying run.
I've got a very bad feeling about this...
K for A-Rod. That's a call (praying to New Guy).
Fail.
Well hey, you were only one batter off.
Screw magic. We'll get 'em tomorrow.
I hope so, for FTLT's sake.
Get Dickey up.
clutch situation for A-
holerod. DP time.Lets hope they play some Madonner on the speakers to throw him off.
Matsui looks off
Wow. Thank you Hideki
Mountie!
Nice play.
I hate intentional walks. Hate them. Hate them. Hate them!
The worst part is that unless some pitcher throws a complete game 27 strikeout perfect game tonight, this will be the first story on ESPN
Well, that sucked.
I really, really hate the Yankees.
What's even worse is after pitching a lot in his fourth straight game, I don't see how Nathan is available tomorrow.
Cabrera disaster. Yanquis win.
aw, FLAPJACK.
where's the N-Bomb
Walking A-Rod three times was the worst. He's obviously not swinging well right now and we refuse to challenge him. Make him swing the bat!
Make that four walks. That's awful!
Well that was fucking shitty.
Dammit. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing the Yankees bitch their way through a game only to f*ckin win in the end.
neither team deserved to win this game...at least we can't feel like this was stolen from us.
The Twins deserved to win the game because it's Morneau's birthday (and he seriously delivered on it).
And I really, really, really hate the Yankees, possibly more than the White Sox, so they tend to piss me off more than other teams.
I don't know. The last two hits were a grounder that found a hole and a flare into left-center.
Really, this game was lost when the Twins get three home runs and only four runs. They need to get more runs against the middle relievers the Yankees trotted out there.
And against that turd Hughes....
Twins will pitch better tomorrow, hopefully the Yanks will continue the same.
Now that's a concise summary!
Damn, ruined my streak of wins. @&^%(@ Yankees.
the last time a Twins team had 10 walks in a game was in 2007, you have to go back to 2000 to have it done in a 9 inning game
I had to catch the end of this one on the radio while picking up my daughter. Almost tore the steering wheel right out of the dashboard. I guess we can't hold a lead any better in this fucking Yankee Stadium than we could in the last one. I'm ready to drink now.
