Woke up at 5:15 this morning, and although I couldn't get back to sleep for those final 45 minutes of shut-eye, I did enjoy listening to a pair of owls on the top of the house across the street discuss all the rain we've been having lately...
"The Love Affair [Final Version]" - Roger Eno, "Music of Neglected English Composers"
"This Time the Dream's on Me" - Harold Arlen, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil soundtrack"
"Quebec" - Geoff Downes, "World Service"
"A Cry for Everyone" - Gentle Giant, "Octopus"
"Lost and Found" - Roger Eno, "The Night Garden"
"Go Forward" - Lisa Gerrard, "Whale Rider soundtrack"
"Tales of a Damson Knight" - National Health, "Complete"
"Leonard and Natalie" - David Julyan, "Memento soundtrack"
"Livin' for You" - Boston, "Greatest Hits"
"Go" - Asia, "Astra"
No bonus track this week; Roger Eno got enough airplay this time around.
Woke up at 5:15 this morning, and although I couldn't get back to sleep for those final 45 minutes of shut-eye,
too bad '%:15' by The Who didnt show up on your list!
ermm.. thats '5:15'
the owls weren't discussing the rain, the were discussing that song ("who! who!" .... no? well, screw all of you)
1. James Blackshaw "Past Has Not Passed" Litany of Echoes
2. Fever Ray "When I Grow Up (We Grow Apart Vocal Version by Pär Grindvik)
3. Grizzly Bear "About Face" Veckatimest
4. Ha Ha Tonka "Thoreau in the Woods" Novel Sounds of the Nouveau South
5. LCD Soundsystem "Sound of Silver" Sound of Silver
6. Animal Collective "Winter's Love" Live 4/27/2004, Breezeblock Radio Session
7. Animal Collective "Guys Eyes" Live 7/11/2007, Coronet Theater, London
8. Fever Ray "When I Grow Up (Håkan Lidbo's Encephalitis Remix)"
9. Gang Gang Dance "House Jam" Saint Dymphna
10. Marit Bergman "Out on the Piers" The Tear Collector
Hey, how was the Animal Collective show?
I liked it a lot, although the sound was kindof muddy and the vocals were probably too low in the mix. I dug the juxtaposition of watching moshing in front of the stage with Panda's lyrics about child-rearing (Also Frightened) and providing for one's family (My Girls).
I was really happy they played "Guys Eyes" which is by far my favorite on the new album.
The definitely take their time with songs; they nearly played for two hours, but only 13 songs, of which 6 were from the new album. Only 2 new songs. 2 songs from Stawberry Jam (Fireworks and Chores), and one each from Spirit, Sung Tongs, and Indian.
Their opener, Grouper, needed a smaller, quieter space. Any subtlety in her drone was lost, and instead she was just really boring.
Rage Against The Machine – “Wake Up” Rage Against The Machine
Panic! At The Disco – “I Constantly Thank God for Esteban” A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out
The Pogues – “London Girl” The Very Best of The Pogues
Eric Clapton – “Wonderful Tonight” Time Pieces
Feist – “How My Heart Behaves” The Reminder
Velvet Revolver – “You Got No Right” Contraband
The Clash – “Spanish Bombs” London Calling
Old 97’s – “King Of All The World” Satellite Rides
Gorillaz – “Feel Good Inc.” Demon Days
Coconut Records – “Wires” Davy
I haven't listened to the Old 97's in ages. I've got to change that.
Live Until I Die -- Clay Walker
Eye of the Tiger -- Survivor
Wishing It Was -- Eagle-Eye Cherry & Santana
National Working Woman's Holiday -- Sammy Kershaw
Anybody But Me -- Brenda Lee
Everybody Hurts -- R.E.M.
Fidelity -- Regina Spektor
Voyage Around The Moon -- Saturn 5 That Thing You Do Soundtrack
Lover's Cross -- Jim Croce
Little Rock -- Collin Raye
"Photographs and Memories" was my first album purchase, back when it came out. We lost a great songwriter there.
My Dad had tickets to a concert in October of '73. never got to use them
Croce remains one of my all-time favorites.
Your Touch – Black Keys – Magic Potion
Chop Suey – System of a Down – Toxicity
Monkey Gone to Heaven – Pixies – Doolittle
The Mountain – Heartless Bastards – The Mountain
For All the Cows – Foo Fighters – Foo Fighters
Suck – Nine Inch Nails – Broken
Powderfinger – Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Rust Never Sleeps
Dancing Days – Led Zeppelin – How the West Was Won
Smack My Bitch Up – Prodigy – Fat of the Land
Velvet Pants – Propellerheads – Decksanddrumsandrockandroll
:thumbs up:
i've only heard snippets of them, but i'm pretty sure that i'd really like the black keys if i properly got into them.
I started with Rubber Factory and went forward in their discography. I've only now started to get some of their older stuff. Anyway, it's all good, so in my mind you can't really go wrong.
Rubber Factory is still my favorite Black Keys disc.
Rubber Factory is certainly a good one, but my favorite is still their first, The Big Come Up. It absolutely blew my mind the first time I heard it.
I've never listened to that one. I'll have to check it out.
I wonder if there are any Youtube clips out there off that album?
I found a few:
Busted
The Breaks (my favorite Black Keys song)
I'll Be Your Man
I can't promise it will blow your mind like it did mine. I was in high school when it came out and was listening to nothing but Rancid and Operation Ivy and Dead Kennedys. Then I heard The Black Keys and they were a revelation unto me.
I was thinking yesterday that Mean Monsoon might be kids' music that the older folks might enjoy too.

The Jayhawks - Live from the Women's Club
I was at that show.
Re: Fatlip
Yay to the Pharcyde! I listened to BizarreRide so many times as a teenager.
I missed them playing at Cantebury last weekend... Had prior commitments and couldn't see myself buying a festival ticket for one act. If they ever do a club tour, I'd so be there.
A bit of sad news from Jayson Stark:

Ha! That is one epic AB!
I was watching the White Sox game last Thursday via gameday. I went back to Gomez's AB during the 7th, and gameday completely imploded. As best as I can figure, it put every pitch in the game to that point for that at bat. Seemed like an appropriate avatar.

Only missing the kids' music this week.
I have Wilco's "Burned" on the I Shot Andy Warhol soundtrack--a pretty sweet collection of covers and originals.
Did I hear "soundtrack"??
I love AMG's All Music site -- I've used it for years.
I love AMG's All Music site -- I've used it for years.
same here
what exactly is outtasite, outtaprint? i found a song list, and i see there's some live ones thrown in there. is like the weird demo cd for YHF that i once found who's name i have no idea?
Outtasite, Outtaprint is just a bunch of covers, in studio performances, and tracks that didn't make the albums. I got it from someone that trades bootleg discs. It's pretty good.
If you want a copy, you can email me at jncerp at yahoo.
we might have to make a trade. i have this cd or something (found it on the interwebs) that has a bunch of demos of YTF stuff, plus a few that didn't make the album. does anyone happen to know what it is? i've seen a couple of the tracks and singles and EPs, but nothing where it's all together.
I think I've got that disc, too. I just have it labeled YHF Demos or something like that.
Brian de Palma Suite - Yo Yo Ma - Plays Ennio Morricone

Bonus: The Sound of Failure -- The Flaming Lips
It is a heavy Husker Du day here at the WGOM.
What's wild is that song #12 was another Husker Du song. That close to a rare random top 10 triple shot.
1. "Brooklyn's On Fire" Nicole Atkins Neptune City
2. "Metal School" Spoon A Series of Sneaks
3. "I Guess I'm Floating" M83 Before The Dawn Heals Us

How is A Series of Sneaks? I'm a late-adopter Spoon fan, but I only have recent stuff.
A bit harder-edged and angular, but terrific nonetheless. I think Britt Daniel is incapable of making a bad record.

We have a rabbit infestation in our neighborhood, but my wife would divorce me if I got the pellet gun out and shot them, like I used to do back in ND. Last Saturday, I noticed that one of my neighbors was shooting rabbits and yesterday, another let me know that he'd shot three of them. He told me he looked out his window one day and saw 11(!) of them. I had noticed that the sightings of them critters was way down lately. And my marriage is still intact.
Kill da wabbit.

rabbits are why god invented dogs.
and red-tailed hawks. but not enough of them
mmm, yea. Red Tail. Goes good with watching dogs chase rabbits.

When the cat got out last week, my wife was worried that a coyote would get him. I told her that there isn't a coyote in our neighborhood, obviously, with all the rabbits running free.
Our Jack Russell ate two rabbits 2 weeks ago. That got them out of the back yard in a hurry.
But him some ammo and a beer.
What about hookers? Teaser headline at ESPN.COM: "Barkley stops gambling, not drinking or golfing".
Fran Tarkenton is hilarious
The columnists at the Pioneer Press today each wrote an article that talked about how Fran was a me-first player.
Well, he was, but he wasn't a wh0re for the spotlight like Favre is.

21 years ago today, the Mrs. and I were riding in a limo from Silver Spring to Georgetown. The air conditioning was inadequate and the champagne bottle was warm. But that's ok, 'cuz I couldn't get it open anyways.
Oh, and we saw some scruffy looking punks in the hotel lobby. The new Mrs. S sniffed in their general direction. Turns out they were Depeche Mode, but they weren't there to play at the reception.
Happy Anniversary, bS!
Happy Anniversary, buddy!
21?! And they said it wouldn't last! congrats
Best regards to you and Mrs. S.
Happy Anniversary to you and your wife.
thanks.
Oh, and someone tried to break into my car in the temple parking lot during the ceremony. Good times.
Silver Spring to Georgetown?! That must have been a fun ride depending upon which way you entered town.
I have almost no recollection of the ride, actually. Other than the fact that it was hot.
I'm guessing East-West Highway to Wisconsin, but really, I have no idea. We were married at Temple Shalom.
Not related to anything on this blog so far, but I have to put a plug in for my fundraiser tomorrow since most of you are so fantastic and already supporting me through the walks for a walker. But I thought this time food might interest you...
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE go to Dino's Greek Restaurant tomorrow (Saturday, May 30) any time between 10:30a and 9p. The Pink Sprinkles as a team is asking for your help. This fundraiser is based on your activity. We are not allowed to remind you, once you get there that you HAVE TO MENTION THE PINK SPRINKLES when you order. Therefore, here is what you need to do:
1. Go to either the Dino's in Edina (66th and Xerses) or Falcon Heights (Snelling Ave) (www.dinosgyros.com for addresses).
2. Walk into the Restaurant.
3. Look at the menu.
4. Figure out what you want to order.
5. Approach the Counter.
6. SAY: "Hi! I'm here for the PINK SPRINKLES and I would like __________"
7. Get your food and Enjoy!
Its not that hard. All you have to do is remember to say "I'm here for the PINK SPRINKLES." I hope you can do it!
I will be at the location in Edina just hanging out with other Pink Sprinkle Supporters if you want to join me there from 11-2:30. I will probably be eating a ton too. Man do I love Dino's.
Our goal is to have over 100 people at each location! So come by tomorrow and support the Pink Sprinkles!

back when i was 18, i was managing the big mike's (now milio's) on france. one day, i'm making sammiches, and i see this little, nerdy, bespeckled 10 year old or so, waiting for his sammich to be made. back then, we were able to play are own music, and somebody had just put III on. so, the immigrant song starts playing, and this little nerdy kid starts mouthing the lyrics word for word. i thought to myself, this kid is effing cool.
I have that Sun Kil Moon song on my iPod... Will Oldham does the background vocals. Someday, I may check out the rest of the album, but that song's kindof depressing.
Most of Mark Kozelek's songs are kind of depressing, so if that's not something you don't look for on occassion from your music, I can't really recommend him.
He seems to have lightened up (a bit) since his Red House Painters days.
I can deal with some depressing, but that song makes me feel like I did something wrong with my life that I should feel very bad about. I internalized the depression and then I get a sense of regret that lingers for hours.

CC to Twayn: Are you still pinch hitting for me for the next two Sundays?
I still need to listen to the Vampire Weekend that came out last year. I remember I liked a song by them.
Could be "Mansard Roof" or "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," which the Current has played on occasion.
Or "A-Punk," which got MTV play, or whatever passes for that nowadays.
A-Punk! that was the song
I was thinking about MTV today, wondering what channel it is on with Comcast.
I fell asleep on the couch on Weds night, and needed to get up early, so when I woke up at 3:00am or so, I flipped channels around a bit. (If I had gone to bed, I don't think I would have gotten up.) Then I found...Videos on MTV (!!!). Saw A-Punk, saw some guy named Asher Roth that looked promising. Snoozed through some, but never fell asleep hard enough so that I couldn't get moving when I needed to. Don't remember what else I saw.
I will look for it, particularly when the only thing on the tube sports-wise is the NBA. I tried to watch Cavs-Magic last night, especially since I read the Sports Guy's screed on the league, but I just don't care. We watched Lost in Translation for the first time in a while instead. I like that movie.
LeBron was awesome with a capital A last night. It was fun watching Wally Szczerbiak hugging him.
videos on mtv?!? you must still have been dreaming...
I believe it. I would prefer to read Posnanski write about for SI, than watch it real time.
I really don't understand the hype behind Asher Roth. Look past the novelty of him being an unselfconsciously stupid suburban white kid, and he's just a terrible rapper. Why are people trying to make him the next Eminem? The world doesn't need another Eminem.
I heard him at 3:00 am, with Cee-Lo. I don't know if he's good, but I DL'd the single and added it to my iPod. Don't know what I'll think of it when I'm alert.
She Swings She Sways=awesome. I have to find that album. It's around here somewhere.

That Massey Hall record is great.
where is Today In Twins History?
Sal Butera had an awesome game back in 1982. He threw out 4 would be stealers, and helped turn a triple play! (what a bizarre triple play too: Triple Play: Strikeout, Nettles Caught Stealing 2B (C-3B-1B), Murcer Caught Stealing 3B (1B-P))
The feature is there, but no mention of this game. Nice find!
oh there it is! I guess I didnt scroll down far enough
that's a 1-2-5-3-1 play. Awesome. I'm having a hard time imagining what happened. I'm guessing Murcer took off for third, and Butera threw to third. Murcer then tried to rush back to second, while Nettles was also going for second. Then the ball was thrown to first as Nettles was trying to get back. Meanwhile, the pitcher went to cover third, and after Nettles was tagged out, Murcer was trying for third again.
okay, I love the internets. From the sabr's triple play website:
Nice.
That must be where Carl Crawford got his base running from.
I was at that game! I remember being disappointed that Smalley struck out and my dad explaining what happened.
I was young.

i think hesitating beauty is technically wilco. true, billy bragg and wilco are equally credited for the album, but it's really one or the other on each of the songs:
that being said, you're right, it's a great album.
Has anybody seen "The Savages"? I just watched it last night. I like Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney.
I liked it, just not real uplifting. I don't think it's one I'd rewatch.
if its got Phillip S Hoffman in it, its probably good.
From my iPod, not my PC (so a sample size of 3000+, instead of 11000+).

I Play the Matador is one of the very finest P.O.S. songs.
LEN3 has the Twins lineup already and no Punto and no Delmon. What are we going to complain about tonight?
Not the lineup.
We can always complain about Matt "Zombie" Tolbert.
It's in your head.... in your head...
“Building a Ruin” by Skyclad
“Guiding the North Star” by Light This City
“Solitude” by Morgoth
“Suffer in Truth” by Meshuggah
“Shadowmaker” by Grave Digger
“Black Horsemen” by King Diamond
“Triangular Tattvic Fire” by Melechesh
“Tidal Tantrum” by Dark Tranquillity
“Ahead of the Pack” by Accept
“A Vulgar Picture” by the Black Dahlia Murder
I was going to see if I could come up with a story relating all the songs together, but then I saw "Triangular Tattvic Fire" and decided that would be impossible.
So I had to sadly dump out every single dry-hopped saison that I had made. Sadly, the lack of complete fermentation caused some serious pressure to build up to the point where bottles were exploding. I had to borrow some thick welding gloves and a face shield from work to open them and let them spray out. Like fountains, they were.
The building was triangular, Tattvic. Fire leaped from the rooftop making it look like a piece of birthday cake gone flaming mad.
Eh, that's all I got...
Bummer about the brews.
That's why other people creatively write, and I merely creatively brew.
That's tragic, cheaptoy.
I weapt a little, and then one of the bottle caps flew off and hit my face shield. Then it was vengance.
Then it was vengance.
And you with the perfect soundtrack for it.
looks like the Corky Miller era in ChiTown is over
How can that be???
I'm goofing with the site tonight, obviously. This is the template that I'd love to use, if I can resolve some issues with it.
juuust a few issues....
When it's done you will appreciate the work I put into it.
We always see what you did there....
