Cup of CoffeeOne night after the worst loss of the season, the Twins run out a September call up who wasn't even on the 40 man roster yesterday to make his major league debut against a division leader fighting the Twins for post season position. And they win. And people say this is a boring game. WGOM Map Add you today!2010 Prediction ContestSpreadsheet The third window is now open. Greg Kihn Band? Haven't heard that name for 20 years!
Who Is Greg Kihn?

They just don't write 'em like that anymore
Greg Kihn's most famous song was probably The Breakup Song you should probably recognize Jeopardy
Holy Crap, I didn't even notice The Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide. That is some wonderfully cheesy 80's music there. I'm going to have to get that on my I-pod (classified under ironic)
yeah, I heard that song on the radio a couple months ago, so I put it on my player
BB King - "Catfish Blues" - Blues Collection
Beatles - "Across The Universe" - Let It Be...Naked
Leonard Cohen - "Everybody Knows" - I'm Your Man
Kid Rock - "I'm Wrong But You Ain't Right" - Cocky

Barenaked Ladies - "Jane" - Rock Spectacle
Lambchop - "My Blue Wave" - Is A Woman
"The Christmas Song" - Seasons Greetings From Nashville
India Arie - "Nature" - Acoustic Soul
i'm torn on let it be... naked. i like a lot of the difference interpretations, but i dislike paul claiming that this is how WE wanted it to sound. lennon had no real problems with what spector did to the album, he even commended him for actually doing something with all the tapes. i think it was just paul getting the last word in. that being said, i still like it.
it's been a while since I heard that album; I remember liking about half of the new versions, and actively disliking about half of them
"ping island/lightning strike rescue op" - mark mothersbaugh – the life aquatic with steve zissou soundtrack
“(straight to your heart) life a cannon ball” – van morrison – tupelo honey

“the pilgriming vine” – basia bulat – oh, my darling
“andy, you’re a star” – the killers – hot fuss
bonus: “mean eyed cat” – johnny cash – unchained
Tupelo Honey is such a great listen all the way through.
it is indeed. i got into it, along with moondance (and van morrison in general) on a looooong drive up into canada.
My buddy in high school had two older siblings, one was into Dylan and the other Van the Man. We used to pore through their collections in the basement, when big brother and sister weren't around of course.
I've not heard of the Reverend Horton Heat, but a song named "Eat Steak" has got to be good.
"it's a grade A meal when i'm in the mooooooooooood"
the reverend horton heat is the king of psychobilly, hands down.

8. America - Simon & Garfunkel - Bookends
9. Nighttime - Big Star - Third/Sister Lovers
10. Savion Glover - P.O.S. - Never Better
I normally have a lot of what is on your lists but I'm not familiar with some of it today.
Representing Minnesota hip-hop today, I see... good times.
I like to buy local.
Even if Brother Ali and P.O.S. weren't local, I'd still buy their records. The fact that they are local (and furthermore put on damn good shows) just sweetens the deal.
I like a lot of your list
Considering how huge country music is in our culture now, and how big it still is in Minnesota, I'm surprised I'm the only person in this WGOM cross-section who is at risk for having half of his lineup come from this genre. Any thoughts from our statisticians on this phenomenon?
Til There Was You—The Beatles
Big Guitar—Blackhawk
Standing At The Edge Of Earth—Blessid Union Of Souls
Do You Love Me—Paul Revere & The Raiders
Walking Talking Man—Hans Zimmer Regarding Henry soundtrack
Like To Get To Know You—Spanky & Our Gang
If You’ve Got The Money Honey, I’ve Got The Time—Lefty Frizzell
I Never Picked Cotton—Roy Clark
Sticks And Stones—Tracy Lawrence
Smile--Lonestar
And for those needing a break from the country...
Bonus Track: Don't Blame Me--Green Day
SSST, Beau ;-)
i love country music. however, i feel that pretty much 99% of the "country music" that's come out in the past 20 years is really glorified pop music.
Agree with Jobu. I got me some Hank, Johnny, Merle, Buck, etc., but I'm not going to touch anything they play on K-102. Also there seems to be a pretty steady mix of "alt-country" on the Nation's I-pods. That's where real Country music is these days.
and I agree with you guys mostly. I do like me some pop music, but 70% of my country music is from 1988-1995, when you could still hear fiddles. I like 106.1 here in the cities, because half of its playlist is from pre-2000.
I will check out 106. I don't listen to radio much these days, so I don't always know where to go.
Beau, where did you get that Beatles track? That was the second song the Fab Four played on their first Ed Sullivan show appearance (I think the producers wanted them to do something the old farts in the audience would recognize). I've seen the video on TV several times, but never ran across an mp3 of it.
With the Beatles.
Incidentally, I think the track is also on "Meet the Beatles!" the American release.
Wow. My wife has Meet the Beatles! on vinyl. We have the album cover framed and hanging in the basement.
Love the Walkin' Talkin' Man track by Zimmer; I don't really understand why the song sort of stops and then restarts, but I'm guessing it's in context with the movie.
Gave Up – Nine Inch Nails – Broken
Ain’t It The Life – Foo Fighters – There Is Nothing Left To Lose
I Will Dare – The Replacements – Let It Be
The Canyon Behind Her – Dredg – Live At The Fillmore
Mark David Chapman – And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead – Madonna
Whatever Happened To… – Onesidezero – Onesidezero
Slither – Velvet Revolver – Contraband
Take It Like A Man – The Offspring – Ignition
Salt Of The Earth – Rolling Stones – Beggars Banquet
River Euphrates – Pixies – Surfer Rosa
I love "Salt of the Earth."
Oh Carolina - Shaggy - The Story of Jamaican Music
Everything I Own - Ken Boothe - The Story of Jamaican Music
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue - Matthew Sweet, Susanna Hoffs - Under the Covers
Time Is On My Side - Rolling Stones
The Story of a Soldier - Ennio Morricone - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
It Never Entered My Mind - Miles Davis Quintet - Workin'
Hard to Handle - Black Crowes
Love for Sale - Dexter Gordon - Go!
I'll Be Your Mirror - Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground and Nico
Without Love - Nick Lowe - Basher
Is that the saddest Dylan tune that isn't on Blood on the Tracks? I don't know this cover.
A couple of years ago Matthew Sweet & Ms. Hoffs made an album of covers of 60's - 70's hits. Kind of hit and miss, but interesting none the less.

I realize this is supposed to be a 10-song list, but I figured a progression as dynamic and awesome as this deserved an 11th track.

1,4,5,7,10: Still trying to get caught up on what's out there now.
9: Yes, from an 4-LP set of bird calls. This side features Sandpipers, Terns, Seagulls, Birds of Prey, and Gamebirds, etc. I've generally been skipping these when they come up, but someday on the bus, I'm sure they'll strike my fancy. I dig the Blue Grouse. Someone could use that in place of a kick drum.
So, what do you think of St. Vincent? That's a good song (and cool vid), but my favorite numbers from Actor are (presently): "Just the Same But Brand New", "Marrow", and "The Neighbors." Actually, the whole record is very good. Then again, I like Deerhoof...
As for bird calls, my NE MPLS neighborhood's aviary contingent was swawkin' up a fearsome racket at about 4 AM this morning. Wha??!! These birds don't sleep?! (Grumpy because I couldn't get back to sleep. Stoopid birds...)
There's a free download of a D.C. concert of St. Vincent's on the 'NPR: Live Concerts From All Songs Considered' podcast. For those who want to check out the band.
If the Twins are ever going to get over .500 (for more than two games), it has to happen now, in the next five series, against the NL Central (except the Reds). If the Twins don't managed to get more than two games over .500 during interleague, I will begin to call my final-dome-game regular-season tickets, the "last game in the Metrodome."
in other words, a preemptive "Game Over. Season Over?"

A few weeks back, I picked up the Starcraft battle chest on a whim because I really missed the old RTS games. To my chagrin, Starcraft and Vista don't play nicely (big surprise).
After 2 weeks of dinking around trying to tweek compatibility settings and dowload patches, I gave up and figured I would kick Vista to the curb for Ubuntu. About 5 minutes after Ubuntu was installed, Starcraft was up and running. I find it fairly ironic (but not surprising) that Ubuntu has a better compatibility program than Vista.
The other day my daughter picked up The Sims 3. I told her not to buy it until we had checked system requirements to make sure it would run on our primary PC (it's a custom box I built about 5 or 6 years ago). So of course she didn't wait, and not only did she buy it she opened it, so it can't be returned. Now I have to invest in a new video card that supports pixel shading 2.0. On the bright side, once I replace the video card I'll finally be able to get Medal of Honor: Airborne.
A couple of years ago I tried to convert an older PC into a NAS device running a stripped down Linux distro, but it did not like the off-brand chipset on the motherboard (anybody remember PCChips?) and continuously locked up or crashed. I finally abandoned the project because portable hard drives had become so cheap I just got one of those instead.
I am really surprised by how user friendly linux/unix OS's have become. About 3 years ago I tried to convert the same computer to Ubuntu but there were so many drivers missing I couldn't use half my components. In the version I just installed, a nifty program discovered all components without drivers and found the appropriate software. Also, very few things in the world are better than kolf.
Do you have Vista 64-bit?
Have you seen this tidbit?
I actually did see that tidbit, and I was using Vista 32 bit. My problem was that after completing missions, there would be a "cannot read memory error" and the game would shut down. At first, I thought it was the computer, but the wonderful Google gave me a fair number of results for the same problem, though no one had a solution. The solution so far has been Ubuntu!
I have to admit, you've got me intrigued. I've been thinking of - at the very least - dual booting my next machine. With the info you've given me, I might switch full over. What was the utility you found that made driver installation so easy? I had a similar issue a few years ago when I was thinking about switching over.
If you want to try it, you can download the iso for ubuntu 9.04 here
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
It'll burn onto a regular 80 minute CD and you can boot from there to try it without installing. The program that downloaded the drivers was synaptic and it was already loaded with this version. I started up the machine and synaptic popped up with a list of about 100 possible updates based on my hardware and the programs already installed. The system comes standard with firefox and openoffice, so there is a pretty good platform "out of the box". Gotta love open source!
I'm getting a lot of pressure to get an Apple next time around. Kids these days. They just don't understand the satisfaction that comes from three solid days of troubleshooting hardware conflicts and searching for up-to-date drivers.

Gardenhire must figure that all of Slowey's fly balls are just going over the wall anyway, so what's the point in putting one of the best defensive CF in baseball into the game?
And w/r/t the lineup--I don't like hitting the pitcher 9th when Mauer is hitting 2nd. Slowey and Punto should be swapped, so Mauer has at least a glimmer of hope of having some runners on base to drive in. Delmon would be kind of a bad hitter to put in front of the pitcher, though, since he'll probably just swing at everything even when they're trying to pitch around him to get to the pitcher. (I know, I know, who would pitch around Delmon? But it's the NL and they'll pitch around Adam Everett to get to the pitcher.)
maybe I won't start Slowey in my fantasy leagues today...
I bet he could go 1-3.
maybe I won't start Slowey in my fantasy leagues today...
I benched him in my league...oops.
I think Gardy's right there with you Ubes, he just thinks Slowey's a better hitter than Punto.

did you see where a bird interfered with the Cle/KC game last night
actually, here is a better post about it
The bird should've been credited with a sacrifice.
I see Livan Hernandez was the starting pitcher for the Mets tonight at Yankee Stadium. He only gave up 3 HR in 5.1 innings. He also threw 103 pitches
also Luke Hochevar for the Royals doing his best Carlos Silva impression. A complete game win while throwing only 80 pitches (57 strikes)
