Cup of CoffeeWolves lose again by 22, Kevin Love down to 17 minutes. This is the worst possible situation for the Wolves. They are driving what is left of their fan base with a tremendous stretch of terrible basketball. Their best, or second-best, player has checked out and is getting buried on the bench. I doubt that Love is in their long term plans. How's that O.J. Mayo deal looking now? Citizens Online28 Users Online WGOM Sign InLog InRetired WGOM Jokes

7. Tommy James & the Shondells "Crimson & Clover"
I loooooooooove this song.
'Crimson and Clover' is pretty awesome. I dig 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' a little more.
Scully:
It's too bad that there's no recording of the first 8 innings.
Crimson etc:
I saw the Prince covers it on his new album, so I remembered the original and tracked it down.
Regarding yesterday's game...
No popcorn buckets, so we got peanuts instead, which was a little above his skill level.
No Joe Mauer, so I had him cheer for Michael Cuddyer and Carlos Gomez.
Wow. That's a hard life lesson for the three year old. No popcorn buckets and no Joe Mauer.
I stopped in at the office befor eheading to the Dome, and checked the lineup.
I told him "Joe Mauer's not playing today."
"That's a dangit!" he replied, ever so cutely.
We have a few Twins popcorn buckets around the house... makes the stomach flu so much more enjoyable, knowing that when you get sick, you can get sick in "Kirby Buckett." I really wanted to add to the collection.
When my brother went to college, one of the first things he bought was a giant tub of ice cream. He ate it quickly and explained to his roommates that they now had a "vomit catcher"
We have about half a dozen of the Twins buckets at home. I keep on in the car as a trash can, and one in the bathroom in case somebody gets sick. There's one under the kitchen sink that my wife uses for house cleaning, and a few more scattered around the homestead. I'm hoping that the popcorn buckets will reappear in the new stadium, but I probably shouldn't hold my breath.

10. Instead Laugh - OneSideZero
+1, ah hell +2, for Meatloaf.
However, I must subtract 1 for the Black Eyed Peas. Don't worry. Meatloaf's all-encompassing awesomeness still means you're ahead for the day.
BEP is a guilty pleasure.
I can't argue.
I have a question about the Black Eyed Peas. Who in the world was it that decided Fergie was actually attractive and worthy of limitless media attention? Because, you know, they were pretty wrong.
She's just a butterface is all. And can't sing. But other than that...
Since it's random top 10 list day, how can a jury award $80,000 per illegal download when the record industry values individual downloaded songs at 99 cents? Are damages worth 81,000 times over loss of income?
Statutory damages.
Isn't that what caused the Letterman/Palin conflict?
I'm sure their powerful lobbies in Congress help as well.

Right. You can infringe a copyright that causes damages of $.02 and get socked for a huge judgment. It's ridiculous.
I believe that it was not so much her downloading the songs, it was that she shared them on the Kazaa P2P network. That can get exponential in a hurry.

1. She Came in Through the Bathroom Window - The Beatles - Abbey Road (this album does lend itself to shuffling particularly well)
2. Black - Pearl Jam - Live at the Fox Theater
3. Karma Police - Radiohead - OK Computer
4. Some Things Never Stop - The Alarmists - Live Current Vol. 2
5. Do Me, Baby - Prince - The Hits/The B-Sides

8. Blow Out - Radiohead - Pablo Honey
9. Sunken-Eyed Girl - Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic
10. Do It - Beastie Boys - Ill Communication
(this album does lend itself to shuffling particularly well)
Er, does not, I mean.
Nice list!
I like everything but Mike Doughty. I've never been able to get into him.
I love Mike Doughty. Soul Coughing is an all time fav of mine.
Abbey Road doesn't shuffle very well, though Bathroom Window definitely stands on its own. What I did was use a joiner program to make the entire medley into one 17 minute song
It certainly stands on its own, but it starts with the last few bars of Polythene Pam. Joining them is a good idea.
Trivia Time: Name five players who have been major league teammates of Joe Mauer and Derek Jeter.
Sean Henn, to start things off
Dougie M11
RonDL
Ruben Sierra
One more. It's a motley crew, to be sure.
The Gambler?
Sidney Ponson
Dammit, Boss, I've got an essay to be writing. It was due...let's see...carry the 1...divide by shoe size...2 months ago.
Ponson. Correct.
I can think of 4:
Henn
Douggie Baseball
Ruben Sierra
Sidney Ponson
Plus RonDL and you have it.

Valley Winter Song - Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
YES! I adore that song! I was listening to that album last night (WIM is probably my least spun FoW record though)
I haven't heard any Marshall Crenshaw in a while. I'm going to have to get me some of that.
This Old Guitar - Neil Young - Prairie Wind

Floating Boy - Fugazi - End Hits
An Open Letter to NYC - The Bestie Boys - To The 5 Boroughs
Sally Maclennane - The Pogues - Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash
Criminal Piece - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - Shake the Sheets
Who can stop at just 10:
Joy - Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
Your Southern Can Is Mine - The White Stripes - De Stijl
The White Stripes seems to always have a throwawayish type song, but its really awesome at the end of their records
Meat and Neil and neck and neck for coolest list this week.
Unfortunately - Baker to Meat's Blackburn - I lack the grit and determination to finish it out.
+ 1 more
inningsongWhoa! Rum, Sodomy and the Lash back to back. There has got to be a message there.
Buy some rum this weekend?
Join the Navy?
DADT, baby.
Excellent suggestions. I'm thinking visiting the dentist is at the bottom of the list.
Nice to see some Ted Leo.
HYPERPOWER! – Nine Inch Nails – Year Zero
Stack Shot Billy – Black Keys – Rubber Factory
Elect the Dead – Serj Tankian – Elect the Dead
The Golden Section – Coil – Horse Rotorvator
Meet Me In the Morning – Bob Dylan – Blood On the Tracks
Bleeder – Nothingface – Violence
Hooker With a Penis – Tool – Aenima
Bring It On Home – Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin II
Trust in You – The Offspring – Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace
Razor – Foo Fighters – In Your Honor
IIRC the lyrics to "Hooker..." include a mention to an Offspring t-shirt.
[Looks it up...] Beasties! shoot.
Also, I'm happy to see the Horse Rotorvator on your list.
The Coil album is pretty cool - I can see how it would be a precursor to Nine Inch Nails-type music (at the major league level).
came across these while listening and filling out my playlist this morning
Howard Sinker sort of calls out Strib commenters
and
over at Yahoo! 'Big League Stew' I see a Les Straker reference
Ms. Jackson - Outkast
Arc of Time - Bright Eyes
Que Onda Guero - Beck
Help! - The Beatles
A-Punk - Vampire Weekend (my two-year old's favorite song)
A Well Respected Man - The Kinks
Contact - The Police
The Times They Are A-Changin' - Bob Dylan
Island in the Sun - Weezer
Peace Love and Understanding - Elvis Costello
Ms. Jackson may be my favorite Outkast song.
Your two-year-old has excellent taste. My two-year-old demanded "Insistor" by Tapes 'n Tapes last night after her brother got to hear his choice "It's Alright Ma" by Zimmy. After we were done listening, my wife came down the stairs and asked, "Are you in heaven right now?" "Why, yes. Yes I am."
He cracks me up--the second we get in my car he asks for "Aye Aye" and as soon as it is done, he wants "more Jimi." Jimi only means "Fire" and none of his other songs.
But I'll take it, if the kid wants to listen to Hendrix and Vampire Weekend I figure it is a good start!
Heh.
My kids used to be all over Ray Charles' "Hit the Road, Jack".
Ahhh, those were the days, before ear buds, when they listened to me too.
I've had to (been delighted to) make compilation CDs for my kids of their favorite Animal Collective and Björk songs.
Right now, their absolute favorite song is Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's "I Am a Cinematographer" (Greatest Palace Music version).
Most definitely a good start. I took my daughter to Cheapo for the first time and picked up Tapes 'n Tapes' debut, so when she wants to hear "Insistor" she asks for "Cheapo."
When my oldest was four, we took him to the Current's hootenanny at the MIA. The DJ asked him what his favorite bands were and he replied, "Romantica, Joanna James and Old Crow Medicine Show." Yes, that was me in the back beaming.
That's a fine list, Peace Love and Understanding is one of my favorite EC songs.
Strangely enough, I didn't really care for it much the first few times I heard it. But after hearing the Wallflowers cover it at some free concert of theirs, the EC version clicked and is one of my favorite songs now.
Despite all of the covers, I can confirm that I own zero versions of this song as an MP3 or on CD. I will now sit in the box for two minutes and feel shame.
i like #3-10 songs on your list
What's so funny 'bout - PEACE! PEACE! PEACE! - loooove and under - PEACE! PEACE! PEACE!
Classic.
The last time I turned on Tool's 10,000 Days, my elder daughter sang along with the opening bit of "Jambi."

It's local hip-hop day!
It's your turn to represent local hip hop this week, I see.
RE: local hip hop, any other Heiruspecs fans in the Nation? I don't listen to much, but it's a friend of a friend. We've seen a couple shows and they are always a good time.
I know of them (I feel like they played at St. John's University or some such thing). I think I have a free CD of there's floating around somewhere, too. I recall that they weren't bad but they didn't make the 8GB iPod cut.
They've been on my list to check out, but I have not yet. I hear good things.
Here's a taste. Again, about hip hop, I know squat.
Awesome - I was going to check them out at Grand Old Days, but we didn't make it.
I lurrrve Heiruspecs. I've seen them like five times in concert, and they put on a damn fine show every time. Small Steps is still one of my favorite songs of all time.
Like P.O.S. and Pharcyde had a baby.
I'm really happy others like them, because the guitarist is about the nicest guy I've come across.
They did a song with a very young P.O.S. on the Small Steps album. Compare it with Stef's new stuff, he's changed a lot since 2000.
TMBG ftw. Ana Ng came up not long after my 10 this morning.

That's how you can tell it's
athe quality list.cc to zoomx. Antie Walt and I tasted the wine you recommended and were sort of disappointed initially. Of course, we didn't follow your directions and let it breathe. We were in a hurry because we were excited due to our affinity for Layer Cake. Anyway, we tasted it again the next day and kapow! It's amazing how that wine opens up with a little oxygen; it's a completely different wine. In any event, thanks for a great recommendation and we will try to be more patient down the road.
Cool UncleWalt! I have found that there are times that I can be "blah" on a wine one day, and "wow" on the very same wine (new bottle) a few weeks later. Sometimes it is what I am eating with it, sometimes it can be the mood I am in... it is weird.
Another wine that may be in your wheelhouse is the St. Hallets Gameskeeper Reserve. We are adding it to our list at work, and I think it is very solid and affordable. The link is to a review that I think nails this wine right on the head. Thanks for the feedback!
Super. I sent the link to the wife. FYI: we also tried Thorn-Clarke's Shotfire also from the Barossa region and it didn't really hold a candle to the other two that have been in discussion.
wow... I hope I don't share your tastes on the Shotfire, because I have a bottle in my wine cellar that I may have paid too much for.
Blood of Eden - Peter Gabriel
Flute Loop - Beastie Boys
Blow Out - Radiohead
Freedom - Rage Against the Machine
Back Porch - Presidents of the United States of America
Death is a Star - The Clash
Faust Arp - Radiohead
Toolmaster of Brainerd - Trip Shakespeare
Don't Let Go - Weezer
Personal Jesus - Depeche Mode
It's a heavy Beastie Boys day here at the WGOM. And we're Blow Out twins... so there's that.
Yeah... I noticed your list was parallel to my tastes before I even hit shuffle. IMHO, a heavy Beastie Boys day is a very good thing!
The advancement of the study of the GAA into such topics at photographic and cinematic representations shows exactly how far the historiography of the subject has evolved past mere accounts of fixture results and All-Ireland Championships into new and challenging areas of academic research.
How's that for a bit of fluff in an essay?
You're getting there...
Just ~400 more words of that and I get beer.
You might want to throw in a few more prepositional phrases, just to make sure you hit your quota.
Topics show and a topic shows. Noun-verb agreement, man!
Good catch rob. Also, I have "at" instead of "as". I'm gonna post my dissertation here for proofreading assuming I ever get it done.
I normally won't came about things like grammer, but school papers seem like a good thing to be anal about.

WGOM comments, not so much.
school papers have an EDIT feature
Through the advanced study of new topics, such as photographic and cinematic representations, the historiography of the GAA has evolved from simple accounts of fixture results and All-Ireland Championships into a field of challenging academic research.
Sorry, it's the editor in me. There was too much fluff for me to handle, I had to give it some structure.
Actually, that's bleedin' brilliant. Can I interest you in a position as research assistant/editor?
That's the first job offer I've had in months.

BTW, I will be away from the computer all weekend, and wanted to say Happy Father's Day to all the dads in WGOMland. One thing I love about this site is that we have a lot of family guys swapping funny, heartbreaking, and inspirational stories about our kids(and spouses). I will be in St. Cloud on Sunday dropping the boy off for a 5 day Christian hockey camp. It is his first extended stay away from Mom and Dad without Grampa and Grandma being involved. It will be a test for him, and for us as well. It will be a bittersweet Father's Day for me.
"Christian hockey"??? Is that camp in Warroad??
um... no... but you did just make me spit coffee all over my desk. Does anything get past you?
My work here is done.
Oh man, Christian Bros. hockey sticks take me way back. I used those through squirts (age 9 or so). Those things had no curve. My backhand shot was never so awesome.
I'm going to be down in W-town with my daughter, wife, and F-I-L. I'll miss out seeing my Dad, but I've spent the last couple of Father's Days with him (one at my place, one at his -- my first Father's Day), so that's okay, I guess.
Agreed. Happy Father's Day. That sounds both exciting and terrifying.
I will be living every dad's dream brunching at a pseudo-French bistro mini-chain, rather than attending an afternoon Twins game. Ah, well. If the birthday girl wants to take over the spotlight, I'm more than willing to stand down.
Not to get all political, but things are sounding increasingly nasty in Iran.
I can't imagine that a Tiananmen-scale crackdown would be sufficient. This smells civil war-ry.
Yeah... I really want to comment, but don't want to get banned. However, I will say that we (America) need to be very cautious of what we say and do in regards to Iran. If we become a spark in this tinderbox, we will deeply regret it.
I have been just fascinated by what's going on there and hope that things turn out for the best.
It's all going to depend on how far Moussavi wants to push things. I would think that at some point self-preservation will take over and he'll back down. Time will tell.

It's been a year since the last Convention. I better get on organizing the next one.
Happy b-day, Andrew. That's a mighty fine present to self.
Oh, it is indeed. My birthday is technically Sunday, but who parties on a Sunday (OK, don't answer that, I do) I'm planning on not being sober from now until Monday morning, then spending two or three days in bed.
I seem to recall, Andrew, that you once said your hangover was soooooooooooooooo bad that you'd never drink again. We knew it wouldn't last

Apparently Dave Cameron doesn't hate all things Twins: His take on Joe Mauer
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-greatness-of-joe-mauer
From the article:
"Right now, Joe Mauer is the most valuable player in the American League, and it isn’t particularly close."
If only the voters would realize this.
For the beer fans from the City Pages. Apparently, Lift Bridge has a limited edition flavor soon to be released and has also solved its bottling issues.
Tanning season is here! Slather yourself with SPF 50 and head to the bar, because Lift Bridge's brand-new summer seasonal, Minnesota Tan, should be arriving on tap at Muddy Pig and Happy Gnome right around the time you're reading this. (It'll also be at a few of Lift Bridge's other clients, including Stub and Herb's in Minneapolis and the Mad Capper in Stillwater. I'm hoping it'll make its way to Moto-i, because I'd love to sip one up on their roof deck.) Minnesota Tan is a high-alcohol Belgian triple with the hue of a sunburned Scandinavian (head brewer Brad Glynn added pureed wild lingonberries to the fermenting tank). The beer has a cranberry-tart bite; a few funky, malt-yeast notes; and an ultra-clean finish. If you like Belgian fruit lambics as much as I do, you'll probably love it. Glynn brewed only 30 kegs, so the supply will likely last just a few weeks, especially if the weather's nice enough for Happy Gnome and Muddy Pig to keep their patios open. If Minnesota Tan is too intense for your taste, try Lift Bridge's Farm Girl Saison, an easy-drinking light beer with just a hint of bitter orange peel. The Lift Bridge guys just started bottling it, so expect six-packs to start showing up at local liquor stores the week of June 22.
I love two things about this post. First, belgian triple!!! Second, calling a saison a "light beer" is just delightful.
I have to come up to Stillwater the weekend of the 27th, so I'm already scoping out a place to get some Farm Girl. I might have to try to stop in at the Mad Capper and try to get some o dat triple.
the Yankees may not be soul crushing, evil, heartless bastards after all

Bonus since I've been listening to him nonstop this summer: "Carry Me Ohio" - Sun Kil Moon Ghosts of the Great Highway
You're the second list to have The National today. Maybe someone can help me out. What would have been their hit about this time last year? I remember they did it, but I can't remember the title of the track.
Fake Empire?
This time last year? Yeah, probably Fake Empire. The first single in 2007 was Mistaken for Strangers.
"Cortez the Killer" - Built to Spill Live
That is one excellent tune.
Twins team pitching by month:
April: 5.26 ERA 4.49 FIP
May: 4.43 ERA 4.88 FIP (second worst in the major leagues)
June: 3.39 ERA 3.59 FIP (third best in the major leagues)
Of course, June isn't over. But the perception that pitching has taken a big step forward this month is accurate.
Opponents in June:
White Sox 3.60 ERA 4.64 FIP
Tigers 4.93 ERA 5.08 FIP
I haven't checked, but it's also possible that part of the improvement in ERA and FIP has to do with lesser opponents. (Certainly getting to pitch to pitchers helps.)
That's certainly a factor:
May:
KC - 3
DET - 5
BAL - 2
SEA - 3
NYY - 4
CWS - 3
MIL - 3
BOS - 4
TB - 3
JUNE
CLE - 3
SEA - 3
OAK - 4
CHC - 3
PIT - 3
So, without actually looking up offensive stats (and instead using my assumptions for expediency), I would put the sucky/good offensive opponent splits at:
MAY: 11/19 (ratio of 0.57 suck to good)
JUNE: 10/6 (ratio of 1.66 suck to good)
I can get behind any ratio that is expressed in terms of Suck:Good.
I'm late out of the gate today because I left my music player in the car and was too lazy to get it before lunch.

11. So Long - Pat Benatar
It ain't Pigs on the Wing, but it's about that length, so there's that.
Two soundtrack items -- nice
I couldn't find a Stray Cats version of Puttin' on the Ritz, so I went with the classic Fred Astair version. Also, the Route 66 on my player is a version I found on the webz by The Replacements (but again, no video that I could find).
I thought the classic version was on the Young Frankenstein soundtrack.
+ 1 syndicated radio show.

Yesterday I was handed front-row tickets to Pat Benatar. Not what I was expecting when I woke up.
Nice Friday surprise: my daughter's scholarship appeal came through, and she was bumped up from the Excellence Award to the Curators Scholar Award: $1500 additional per year! It never hurts to ask (esp. politely, and with figures to back it up)
Congrats to the daughter, Rhu-Ru.
A new survey in South Africa reveals that 25% of all men surveyed admitted to raping a woman and that half of those men had done it more than once. 10% of the men surveyed said that they themselves were raped by another man. Wow.
Gang rape is a form of male bonding? Do they have no sports in South Africa? No fight clubs? No poker tournaments?
"fight club" was a recent fad amongst the (many) idiot boys in my daughter's elementary school. apparently it went on for multiple sessions before a parent finally reported it. incredibly, not a single kid reported it to a teacher or administrator.
*my kid claimed --credibly enough, given that her nose is always buried in a book on the way home-- no knowledge of the affairs until after the beans were spilled.
No beer?
I'm guessing that beer might be involved in a number of those gang rapes....
Dr. Chop and I watched the wrestler last night, and I have to say that it was an excellent movie, depressing, but non-the-less excellent. The 2nd half of the double feature was Jim Gaffagin's King Baby. Hi-Larious.
In my experience, depressing has a larger ratio of excellence than uplifting. I don't think that's intrinsic to the genres...it's just that the best writers are usually soul-crushingly depressed.
I agree on its excellence. I also thought it was painful just watching Mickey Rourke walk around, he really pulled off the completely broken down body effect.

"The Impression That I Get" - Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Let's Face It
I havent heard that song in ages
I just realized that I am going to 5 Twins games in the next 10 days. That's more than I usually get to in a full season!
Are you going to be internet-connected when you're here, Alg? Just want to make sure we coordinate meeting up before the Sunday game. I think you're coming from the south, right? We could meet where the two MetroLink routes meet, maybe, or whatever. Or, you might want to drop me your cellphone # to my email. I'll do the same to you.
I'll have cell and email while in StL.
In a little under half a season, the Twins have five players who have reached double digit home run totals.
Til now, they hadn't had five players do it in a full season since 2005.
they only had 3 last year
