Hey guys, I'm in need of some musical assistance. I have 7 downloads left from eMusic. Can you suggest just one track from each of these bands (or add your own band and track) so that I'll get an idea of their overall work? These are all both bands I've heard of around here and suggested by eMusic for my tastes.
Son Volt
Lifter Puller
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Blitzen Trapper
The Jayhawks
Of course, that's only 5 bands, so if you know two more bands I should have a look at, let me know.
"The Modern Leper" by Frightened Rabbit.
As for Son Volt, Trace is the best still. Check out "Windfall" for a driving tune. "Mystifies Me" was the first dance at my wedding.
Blitzen Trapper - Furr
The Jayhawks - Blue is probably their iconic song
Son Volt -- 1st three songs off of Trace
Lifter Pullter -- I would skip this band
BRMC -- Anything off of Howl
The Jayhawks -- Pick anything it is all great
Other suggetions -- I have hundreds of Guided by Voices songs you should check out. Also the Boy with the Arab Strap, Stars of Track and Field, Another Sunny Day, and My Wondering Days are over by Belle and Sebestian will definitely get you hooked on B&S
Since you're digging on Camera Obscura, Andrew, I'd second the Belle & Sebastian recommendation.
Mark me down for some Belle and Sebestian as well.
"Your Covers Blown" by Belle and Sebastian would be a fantastic choice.
It's been years since I sought out their music (and now I'll have to rectify that), but I always loved the Jayhawks' "Commonplace Streets." Who knows if I'd feel differently now, having not heard it since 1996 or so?
Birthday list:
Wilbert Robinson (1863)
Harry Frazee (1880)
Bobby Veach (1888)
Dizzy Trout (1915)
Bob Shaw (1933)
Harmon Killebrew (1936)
Larry Stahl (1941)
John Boccabella (1941)
Rick Honeycutt (1954)
Pedro Guerrero (1956)
John Wehner (1967)
Harmon! Happy freakin' Birthday!
Okay, I have yesterday's game write-up done now. And bS, I added some of the scorecard to the game 2 blog entry, fwiw.
Hey Alg, much nicer visiting with you on a Twins' win at a beautiful day at the ballpark than a Vikings' loss at the St. Louis Vikings' Fan Club. Drive safe today.
Don't forget Gary Busey!
What team did he play for?
Long live the Killer!
I got my annual edition or the SABR Research Journal in the mail yesterday and I've flipped through a couple of interesting articles already. One was short bios of players who were mostly "pinch-runners" so Matt Alexander, Herman Hill, Don Hopkins, etc.
However, one that was really interesting was a study on which players had the most consecutive games "creating a run". The rudimentary formula was simply: a created run was a game in which the player either scored a run or had a RBI. Anyway, the longest streak in baseball since 1933 in creating runs in consecutive games belongs to a Twin. Any guesses?
I always had considered Tony O to be someone of that quality.
Lew
Creating one for the opposition doesn't count.
I'll go with the obvious and say Harmon in 1969.
I just took a look at Harmon's splits that season. His OPS by month: 999, 841, 1022, 1055, 1034, 1088.
Almost as amusing was his BABIP by month: 315, 227, 276, 208, 183, 268. He hit 49 HRs on the year, tying his career high.
I'm going to go with Chuck Knoblauch.
There's your winner. From July 3 through August 2, 1996, Knoblauch scored or drove in a run (or both) in 27 consecutive games. His line during that stretch: .386/.508/.663 with 40 runs scored.
The Chuckster was simply awesome that year. I really believed at that time that there was nothing standing between him and the HOF. Man, did that change in a hurry.
Sadly, I didn't pay much attention to baseball that year, so I didn't realize what a truly remarkable player we had until he left for New York. I mean, I knew he was good, but not this good.
His 1996 was highest VORP total for a Twin, ever. He was just spectacular and Molly was pretty good, too. If only Kirby could have played and we would have had some pitching. Sigh.
I bet most teams could say that every year
Well yes, but 1996 was the year that Kirby was forced to retire.
trying to remember...why did Hrbek retire at such a young age? Was it just because of his injures? Up until '94 he was still a pretty good first baseman.
He had a number of nagging injuries and I think he was just tired of it all. Not passionate enough to stay in shape. More interested in hunting, fishing and bowling at that point in his life. Kind of hard to criticize that -- he'd made a tidy fortune, won two titles, and had a pile of money. why not go out on top?
Still, all those things are meaningless without lots of casual sex. How was he in that arena? Hmm?
I never got to first base with him.
AAaugh! I can't believe I blew that.
"Hrbek never got past first base."
Don't feel badly. Neither did Ron Gant!
I'll go with Carew, but I'll probably be wrong.
Possibility of no Gil Meche Wednesday per USA Today:
Gil Meche may or may not make his start Wednesday against the Twins because of shoulder fatigue.
Meche will attempt to throw a bullpen session Monday after not throwing off the mound the previous two days. How Meche comes out of the bullpen session will decide his fate for the Wednesday game.
"If I feel good tomorrow, then I'm pitching," Meche said. "If I don't feel good tomorrow, then I'm not pitching. Maybe it's just that time of year, going through a dead arm or something. I just got to basically do whatever I can these next three starts to where I'll feel OK, and hopefully the All-Star break will kick my arm back in and have a good second half."
After throwing 132 pitches in a complete-game shutout June 16 against the Diamondbacks, Meche has yielded 13 runs and 14 hits, including four home runs, in 8 1/3 innings.
Meche, however, does not blame the high pitch count on his recent ineffectiveness.
"I think it's stupid," Meche said to make a connection between the 132-pitch shutout and his next two starts being sub-par.
Manager Trey Hillman said it would depend on how Meche feels the next couple of days on whether he would make his next start.
C'mon Meche. Be a man. Take one for the team! Keep those Jeremies on the bench.
I've still only gotten two status updates for this month's WGOM Challenge. Send me them now people!!!
mine will be in in a bit.
I've got mine all ready to go, just have to get home to the non-work computer.
And I'm gonna eat a pint of Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey.
You are what you eat and last night I was a bowl of popcorn.
Interesting. Last night I was a dry martini, and tonight I'm a belgian pale ale.
And I'm Orange Cream Soda that only looks like a beer bottle. Baaaah.
Because you can never have too many rookie point guards: NDSU's Ben Woodside joins the Wolves summer league team.
no, that's Albert Lea's Ben Woodside. So I am contractually obligated to hate him.
I hope the Boss doesn't mind me treading on his "Either...or" bit, but I had a serious dilemma as I walked through Target yesterday.
So if faced with the decision between these two double-disc features, identically priced (at a cheap $5), which would you choose? And you can only choose one, none of this wishy washy get 'em both stuff!1!
Either...
Ghostbusters I and II
Or...
Wayne's World I and II
Neither sequel holds much value compared to the original, however I would rate WWII as an above replacement level sequel. I think the original Ghostbusters (or OG) is likely a superior movie to WW, but WW has the "Tia Carrera Advantage". Like I said, quite the dilemma.
***Interesting sidenote, the Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey double disc was sold out....whoa***
Oh, I think GBI >> WW. I like Sigourney Weaver, even if I'm unsure how to spell her name. I didn't see either sequel.
In case you never got curious and looked, yes, you have her name spelled correctly.
And since I'm here, I'll go for Ghostbusters as well. Both WW movies are better than Ghostbusters II, but I watch the first Ghostbusters probably twenty times a year.
My money is on Ghostbusters. Murray is solid gold in the first ghostbusters, and while WW is funny, the Tia factor can't contend with classic lines such as "we came, we saw, we kicked it's ass."
Alice Cooper, with his history of Milwaukee speech, was pretty funny.
does this guy know how to party or what
==
I would get the Wayne's World collection
I would have to go with this, magnified by the sequel disparity (although I do love the foreign guy and Rick Moranis with a proton pack.)
"Sir, lots of people's girlfriends are in there."
Murray>>>>Myers!!1!ones!!
Whatever goodwill I might have once felt towards Mike Myers has long since vanished. The guy is the epitome of smug.
Not enough ">" in there.
Or !111!'s
I agree with your assessments. GB1 > WW1. WW2 > GB2.
However, only one of those movies do I have a desire to watch again. And that's Ghostbusters. Think of it like the draft--take the best available
I've not seen WW2, but I wouldn't feel comfortable picking against Vigo the Carpathian.
I would be interested in your comparison of Vigo to Waynestock...you may be surprised.
If you see a naked Indian in a dream tonight, you'll know which one to pick. Then you'll have to ask yourself why the Indian wasn't wearing any pants.
Chrissie Evert with a well-deserved get off my lawn moment for young female tennis players.
Did Jime Rome interview her?
I think Monica Seles (pre-stabbing) started the whole shriek movement. I prefer women's tennis to men's, but that shrill just makes watching it unbearable.
Women's >> Men's tennis, especially at Wimbeldon. They have rallies!!! Men's tennis on grass: serve, return, volley, point. Boring!
I think you're overestimating the length of the men's points
overestimating length is a common affliction with men's points.
dude! just turn the volume down! Double-bonus: then you can't hear Bud Collins!!!one111!!!
You can't turn the volume down to escape Bud Collins's pants.
Who wants in Bud's pants in the first place?
check out this box score: 51 runs scored!!!
Time of Game: 4:10
It wasn't the 32 hits that were a problem, it was the 13 walks and 5 errors.
not enough bunting in the game I guess
What happened in the 6th and 7th innings? Was it tea time or something?
The first baseman Carrasco was 4-7 with a walk, four runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and six RBI. Pretty good game, but not the best. His buddy Clark was 5-6 with two walks, seven runs scored, a triple, two homers, and five RBI.
Two ballplayers were a double away from the cycle, two others a triple away, and one a HR away -- but each of them had the required 4-hits.
Make that four that were a triple away. Yeesh, what a mess
Gotta love the Cal League. High Desert's ballpark makes Coors seem like Petco. Who would have thought high elevation combined with hot, dry air would cause the ball to fly out of the ballpark? Lancaster's ballpark is just about as bad. Lake Elsinore's home ballpark is actually a pretty good pitcher's ballpark. I've covered three games there and it has a really high wall and its fairly deep all the way around with it going really deep in left-center. It is also pretty close to sea level.
So I found out this weekend that the cat we got has, most likely, a good deal of Maine Coon in her. Then I looked that breed up on Google Image and found out how big they can get:
That could mean a lot of food.
Yeah, but housecat isn't as tasty as it sounds.
Doh!
(I really should have seen that coming).
Our oldest cat is most Maine Coon. He is 36" nose to tail, but he only weighs about 10 pounds.
He looks a lot like that one in the picture, too.
Maine coons. Bleah. Those creatures were not meant to survive in the wild.
a Legal case probably worth watching. It involves the NFL and antitrust stuff
