See, science has its uses.

Since concluding the study, Greening says he now instructs all couples seeking fertility advice to start by having more sex. "Some of the older men look a little concerned," he said. "But the younger ones seem quite happy about it."

  • I don't want damaged sperm, but I don't have a partner. What should I do?????

    • If you don't have a partner, having damaged sperm is sort of a moot point, isn't it?

I've been wanting to respond to this, but couldn't really think of the best thing to say. But, you've taken care of it for me, buddy.

        • I'm just happy he knows how to use the word "moot" correctly. Whenever someone mentions a "mute" point, I wanna smack 'em

          • I had a "friend" at my last job who misused every possible saying like that. She also said "hunger pains" and "supposably."

          • except for the part where "moot" means "arguable" as opposed to "now irrelevant". Smile

            • okay, maybe I've been using it wrong...can you link me?

                Moot has two different meanings.

              • Holy crap, I had no idea. What an abomination. I would never meaningfully give one word those two definitions. As far as I can tell, you almost have to know what the speaker is saying without him saying anything in order to interpret which definition he means to use.

I knew a guy who commonly used this word in the sense pointed out in definition 9A in a business environment. I had to wonder why he thought that was a good idea.

              • One of my acting profs used the word "niggardly" once, which isn't related to the word it looks like, but holy hell did the dumber people in my class cringe at that one. Again, he wasn't necessarily in the wrong to use the word, but he still should've known better.

              • I always admired Rick Springfield for using the word "moot" in his lyrics, and not mute.

And for some reason, a slew of people in the StL area love to use "supposably" -- I'd never heard it before I got here.

              • This is not an indictment of the area - I'm sure there are plenty of wondrous people down there - but I've known around 10-15 people from Missouri, and every one of them was rock stupid.

Again: I know this isn't a rule or anything. Just tossing it out there.

              • Well, StL is barely in Missouri.

and I'm pretty sure there are some smart people in that neighborhood. (cough cough -- Wash U -- cough cough)

              • those folks at Wash U have to be smart, what with the $$ required. And I'd guess over half of the students at Wash U aren't from Missouri

              • The stupid people are from Missourah, not Missouri.

I think every area of the country has stupid misuses of the English language. My favorites in Minnesota are misues of borrow and myself.

I have to admit I've been guilty of the "come with" abomination.

Do you know what I hate? When people say, "This is addicting..." Addictive, people.

I knew a guy who would always say, "I have did that." Drove me crazy.

              • Ugh. I occasionally do the "addicting" thing. I hate hearing it too, and I hate it more when I do it and catch it later. It's one of those words that almost nobody even realizes exists, so the mistake persists.

But I have never and will never say "I have did that."

              • Oh, and Algonad? I love the Missourah/Missouri comparison. I can get behind that.

              • The stupid people are from Missourah, not Missouri.

They say if you give Missourah the bottom row of Iowa counties, both states' average IQ will go up 10 points.

              • "Missourah" should only be used in the Mizzou fight song, otherwise it IS an accurate indication of a resident's IQ

          • SBG

Does "mute point" == sign language?

  • Wow, a post about sex devolves into poor word choice and use. I <3 this place. And farting.
