Plant & Page “Thank You”

Irvine, CA, 1995. A bit of gratitude to Stick and Ball Guy for making this such a cool place to hang.

(I know the boss loves him some Zep. Me, too.)

  • I loves me some Led Zep, but it pains me to see Plant trying to sing the old stuff in the old way. I much prefer his Honeydrippers stuff and his countryfied stuff with Allison Krauss given the state of his range these days (i.e., any time after about 1985 or so).

I saw Page and Plant on that tour at Target Center. I was up front, close enough to see sweat on Plant's face. Jimmy was the show. No doubt about it. Got to give Plant credit for that hair, though.

I thought you were a Stones fan?

Heh. The Stones wrote a lot of their own songs.

As much as I love the sounds that LedZep made, it's disturbing to realize that they ripped off so much stuff from old bluesmen without attribution. It really puts them (at least) a peg lower than they would otherwise be.

        • I agree, and I still love both bands despite some shady history.

What shady history do the Stones have? I mean, sure, one of their members died in his twenties (termed "death by misadventure" by the coroner). And at least Mick and Keith have been arrested on drug charges. And Keith may have ingested more hard drugs than anyone who has ever lived. And their security detail killed a guy right in front of the stage. And Marianne Faithful was turned into an absolute junkie -- and the Stones stole her "Sister Morphine" tune. And they were tax exiles. And Mick has fathered children with a whole coterie of women. And Bill Wyman at 52 married an 18 year old that he'd been dating for five years. And Keith reputedly cut his own father's ashes into cocaine and snorted it. Other than that, I can't think of much else, unless I sit down and work at it.

  • I love this song, but Plant's voice sucks here and I never like these "for the cash" tours. Sorry I am giving it a 7.

I am pretty sure that this was the tour in support of No Quarter. The music had a decidedly Eastern feel and the band that supported the tour included a lot of musicians who played instruments that are not often found on rock tours. I would say that it was ambitious and not your run of the mill "for the cash" tour.

Geez, tough room. I thought Bobby acquitted himself quite nicely on this one... One of my favorite Zep numbers precisely because it doesn't sound like Howlin' Wolf on steroids.

I threw it plenty of love. It's not my favorite Zep tune, but I think they acquit themselves quite well.

But, as we know, all-time greats performing classics draw yawns in these parts.

      More William Hung, please!
