2009 SBG Nation Convention

I have been putting off the Convention for awhile because I'm not 100% sure, given my family situation, that I can make it myself. But, after thinking about it for a while, I've decided that we need to go forward. I've come to realize that this group isn't about me, and if I'm not there, there's still plenty of people who will want to be there.

I am planning to be there, unless I'm just flat out unable. The date is August 1. The place is Minnehaha Falls Park. The time is 12:00 Noon. We will have a picnic. Bring your glove if you want to play catch. Bring your family. Have a little food and go enjoy the park if you want. At 5:00 we'll head off on the Light Rail to the Twins game.

I'm asking for $5 a person/$10 a family for the picnic. We'll provide food, plates, utensils, etc., ad soda pop. If you want a ticket to the game, I'll buy a block of tickets in upper deck reserved for everyone that says, "I want a ticket". I think they are $20 a piece. If you are planning on taking part, please let me know.

Last year's event was a lot of fun. It was a beautiful day, we had about 20 or 30 people there to enjoy conversation, some delicious Banjo cooked brats and various other picnicky type foods. It was a lot of fun to visit with the people who converse around here. I would hope that you will consider joining us. Again, we'll start at noon and we'll have food available through out the day. Be a part of the 3rd Annual Convention and show your WGOM bonafides.

To sign up, leave a response here. I will contact you from there to firm things up.

  • Unfortunately, Sheenie and I will be departing Seattle on an Alaskan cruise that day, but have lots of fun without us. If the ubeldude or spookymilk don't have plans, we'll be attending the August 8 M's game (I believe against Tampa Bay).

    • I put it on my calendar. I might be able to make it, but I'm not sure yet. One thing to keep in mind is that the Seattle Sounders are playing a 6pm game next door at Qwest (which, honestly, may outdraw the Mariners game that evening) so traffic and parking in the stadium area is going to be a total mess. I kind of wonder if one game or the other will have its time changed.

    • Huh, it looks like that's the same night as the USS Mariner event at Safeco, too. So you'll be in the same ballpark with Dave "Eric Hinskie" Cameron.

  • Sigh, I won't be able to make it either. It's Kari's sister's birthday on the 2nd, and if I don't go with her to that, I will get in big time trouble. I've managed to get out of quite a few of her family events, and she hasn't been pleased.

  • I'll be there. Gimme a ticket!

  • I would dearly love to be there. Not this year, I'm afraid.

  • I'd love to be there, but I'm going to have to put myself down as a maybe for the moment. Between family issues and our belated honeymoon the next week there's just too much up in the air to say without discussing it with the missus.

  • Sadly, I'll be making it 3 for 3. Yes, missing all 3 conventions. Family reunion that weeked...

  • I can't make it this year, but I can vouch that the last convention was a lot of fun.

  • I want to, but it's all contingent upon whether contracts are signed for the show beforehand, and whether we'd go into production immediately. I wish I could give something firm here, but I probably won't know anything until about three days before it happens.

  • I had a good time last year and would love to come again, but it's looking like I'll be in Chicago that weekend.

It's open for me. I'll have to talk to my wife, but I'm optimistic!

  • We already have tickets for the game, but I'm planning on bringing the family to the convention.

    • That's a banner idea. With kids ages six, three and one, as well as the requisite gear, the UW fam doesn't do reserved seating very well. I think we will attend the convention and then ruin the enjoyment of the game for the folks up in GA. Or, more likely, we'll just blend right in.

That's what's so great about this location. You can bring little kids, stop by and say hi, have a little something to eat, and then go off and have fun with the kids.

  • well, i will randomly be in town so that i can attend that very game. i've got the tickets already, but i wouldn't mind stopping by the convention.

  • Dang! 2nd year and a row that I will miss. Will be on the shores of Lake Superior taking a much needed vacation.

Were you at the first one? I don't recall. I know that Andrew and Carter Hayes were, as were Aaron Gleeman. Who else was at Convention #1?

      • No I wasn't. For some reason I thought last year was #1.

The first one was on a Saturday morning. The Twins had one of those early morning games before a Goofer football game. We met up at Hubert's and had a little breakfast before the game. Last year was the first picnic, but second convention.

      • Here's the list cribbed from this post:

John Sharkey & Kyle from Gameday, Will Young, Scot, Scot's new boy, Scot's wife Emily, StatFreak101, The Then-Future Mrs. Hayes (Jo), CarterHayes (Wyl), Q, Andrew, SBG, Aaron Gleeman, plus Moss & family who sat elsewhere but showed up to Hubert's

  • Boss...how can I help?

  • I can probably make it to the picnic part, but that night is going to be my super exciting 5-year high school reunion so I'm gonna miss the game. The reunion is pretty pointless though, since I basically hang out with my high school friends all the time anyway, but perhaps I can at least get some closure on an old unrequited crush or two.
