Wife called in, again... not expected to make it through the day. She was with him last night and he was alert and he was doting on Miss SBG and playing with her. We were so glad that he was able to spend some time with her. This morning, he was unresponsive and struggling for every breath. The nursing home brought in cart of things for my wife so that she wouldn't have to leave and could be with him on this, the presumptive last day of his life. Some time later, he motioned to the mask on his face and my wife discerned that he wanted to say something. It was something that he was responsive at all, but what he said was shocking: I'm hungry. So, they brought in a ham and cheese sandwich and he ate the whole thing. And then he was smiling and Miss SBG was sitting by him and he was making funny faces at her. And he started to talk again. Amazing. Simply amazing. My wife related all of this to me and after our discussion, we both started to laugh. What was so funny? I don't know. I suppose that it's the fact that they've called us in four times. I guess it's that she and one of his friends and his brother all thought that this was really it -- he looked terrible and it seemed like he was going to leave us. And then, all of a sudden, he's eating a ham and cheese sandwich. The man is TOUGH! It has been a wild day down there. Wife called in, again... not expected to make it through the day.
