Just a note on the daughter's sleeping: when she was in Winona so much, she often didn't get to bed at the right time and didn't have her dad there to enforce bed time. So, when she got home, she figured that she could just get out of bed after bed time. Not in the middle of the night, but up to say 10PM. Now, though, she is back to staying in her bed once I put her in there.
The routine is mom and dad each read to her. Then she and I go upstairs and I rock her for a little while and sing her songs. Then I ask if she wants to get into bed. She says, "Yes". I ask, will you get out? She says, "No." And she stays in bed. I'm pretty amazed by that, actually.
It is amazing how much kids need routine. A few years back, when my dad was in his last few months, we also were making drives back and forth to see him. Our 2 kids got out of their sleeping patterns, and boy, was it hard to get them down each night. It wasn't until it was all done, and life got back to normal, that they suddenly got back to a normal bedtime routine.
I am happy for you that things are settling back down.
It is pretty amazing. I guess that the take away is that she really wants to go to sleep, but all of the disruptions have just made it difficult for her to settle down at night.
Can we get a few songs at the convention?
I think that what Gene Wojciechowski is saying here is that Derek Jeter is bigger than baseball. If Jetes were found to have tested positive, it wouldn't be the end of baseball. Far from it. It would, however, crush any remaining mystique associated with the most recent Yankee dynasty.
I don't understand how articles like this still get written. Pro sports has a lot of money involved! People will do a lot of things for fame and fortune! There are a lot of trappings associated with fame and fortune! We all know that.
My perspective will probably change as my son gets older, but I just don't care if the players I cheer for are good people or if they are a**holes. It is easier to just assume the worst and hope for the best.
Does it seem like Joe Mauer and is a nice guy? Yeah, but would I be surprised or dissappointed to find out otherwise? No.
Joe Mauer is quiet and reserved. I wouldn't be too surprised if he's a sleeper-cell Al-Qaida agent that clubs baby seals for fun in the off-season for all I really know about him. I doubt that's the case, but who knows?
Don't forget, people -- day game today...
grumble, grumble.
oh good, it's raining! that means I dont have to drag the hose down to the community garden. My parent usually takes care of all this gardening stuff, but they had to stay down South because of an emergency with my sister. I picked about 25 Roma tomatoes yesterday, and I have no idea what to do with them. I made a salad and tossed some in, but I can only eat so many. I'll probably pick another 25 today, and another 25 tomorrow. I think its a mutant plant
DW, I implore you to make some fresh salsa (or as we call it in Nodak... hot sauce). I wish I had the recipe my ma used growing up, it was blended salsa with a very smooth consistency and a sweet foretaste with a moderate jalapeno bite that followed. Makes my mouth moisten!
Exactly -- romas good for salsa. My mother used to make the chunky kind, but now goes with the smooth. V. good.
great minds....
the recipe below also works well as a blended salsa if you are lazy. I often add a clove or two of smushed garlic.
hmmm. I think I might do that.
make salsa, dw. Here's a nice recipe for pico de gallo (from Mark Miller's Coyote Cafe cookbook; I've used the recipe for years):
makes about 2 cups of salsa, so double or triple the recipe!!
2 tablespoons diced onion (rinse the onion with water to reduce the "oniony" smell if desired)
2 cups tomatoes chopped into small cubes (meh; seed and chop)
2 serrano chiles, finely chopped (or substitute jalapenos for a milder bite)
2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro (the Mrs. hates cilantro; I often substitute flat-leaf parsley)
2 teaspoons sugar (I usually reduce this a bit; maybe 1.5 teaspoons)
2 teaspoons salt (I usually reduce this a bit; maybe 1.5 teaspoons)
juice of 1 lime
1/4 cup Mexican beer (or any lager or not-too-hoppy ale)
Put onion in a strainer, rinse with hot water and drain. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Let sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes before serving. Helpful hint from the author: "Feel free to consume the rest of the beer while waiting!"
you can also throw some reconstituted red chili pods (now available in St.Pete, so I assume in other smallish towns in MN) to the blended into the tomato. Red chili has that classic mexican spiciness, and by adding it a bit at a time you can control the amount of heat that your salsa has.
mmmm. pico de gallo
The thieves came at night and took everything in sight
I'm beginning to wonder who I pissed off, who cursed us, or what kind of cosmic forces are at work here, but man I'm tired of paying.
We were robbed, twice. I needed to buy a car in order to live in Abq. and got totally hosed by an unscrupulous craigslister and our apartment complex was unguarded for several days.
So, as the song says Dr. Chop and I are holding our heads high and fleeing to Texas.
Perhaps the whole SBG Nation is cursed. Someone give us some good news, please!
I have bought only one vehicle from a private citizen (not a dealer) and the guy was someone that my brother knew well and vouched for. Plus, it was only a $1200 car.
Dang, that's rough man.
Maybe its a conspiracy to help you not feel bad about leaving NM for TX.
Good grief. That's a rough stretch.
My car was broken into many years ago and my stereo was stolen. I remember feeling offended because they left all of my CDs, as if my tastes weren't up to the standards of a common thief. What's wrong with a little Sinatra anyway?
I know a guy who recently had his truck broken into. The thief took cash, left the credit cards where they were, and left a note:
"Great taste in music! But a piece of advice: lock your truck from now on!"
That is funny. I wish I had left the doors unlocked. Then, the chump wouldn't have had to break my window.
I knew a dude whose roommate had a sign in his window that said "No stereo in here," which was true. One day, his windshield had been smashed, and the sign had been turned over and the perp wrote "Just making sure."
Gees meat, you could always come to Buffalo. Your house might still be burned down and your car will certainly get broken into (your apartment too!) (all of the above have happened to me!), but bars are open until 4am. So at least we have got that going for us, which is nice.
I'm glad I live in Wisconsin for having good stuff to drown any sorrows I may have, but I would love to be able to regularly drown them in some Brooklyn Lager.
Michael Vick is in Buffalo today. I think my career as a football fan my soon be over.
Yuck. I thought he was going to the Bears?
I'm sure that T.O. would love to have Vick's scattershot arm throwing him balls.
Nothing has been confirmed by any major media outlets. People who work for such local outlets have told me independently that he is in town but don't expect a signing right away. When I asked why his news outlet isn't all over this he said the team doesn't want it getting out... yet.
Ughh.
Man, TO is one thing, but I wouldn't wish Vick on Buffalo even if I hated the city (wait, I take that back, I hate Chicago so I would wish Vick on them). No way they deserve that.
There are way worse people in the NFL than Michael Vick. It's not even close, in my opinion.
I'm with you on that. What I see as being intolerable for Buffalo fans is what I mentioned above. I mean, TO ripped Garcia, McNabb, and Romo, three pretty darned good QBs. Just wait till he gets three balls at his feet and a fourth five feet over his head. He will come UNGLUED!
True, but Ray Lewis doesn't come with quite the same media circus and potential for PETA to be involved.
What Ray Lewis has (I think) that MV doesn't have is a lot more media savvy and smarts. Lewis appears to be a pretty smart dude and capable of manipulating people in a way that I don't think MV can.
The media circus is the thing I am the most afraid of. I don't even care if he is a bad dude; he served his time, whatever. I just hate more negative attention being directed on Buffalo.
No worries, FTLT, Vick will remain a bird.
He'll be an Eagle.
Got me thinking though, if a Buffalo Bill were something, would it be deep-fried duck mouths dipped in hot sauce?
True Hoop with a really good article about my favorite hapless basketball team. It seems impossible that a nice article like this about the Wolves would find its way onto the ESPN website. But, there it is, pretty well balanced about the remarkable process that the Wolves are going through.
Al Jefferson = the awesome
I just met him today. He already got my respect for that, because a lot of people don't want to come to Minnesota. I'm here and I want to be here, and I want do something this team has never done before, we're going to need all the main pieces to get us there.
Les Paul is Dead.
Tiger -4 and tied for first through 14 at Hazeltine. Minnesota could turn into Tigerville this weekend!
Thankfully, it's the Clevelands and not the Detroits playing the Twins at the Dome this weekend.
You know, I could see people using this recent stretch of games as validation that Morneau is the team's MVP, not Mauer. After all, even though Mauer has had a hot streak of late, it hasn't really helped the team; when Morneau isn't hitting, the team also suffers, so therefore his performance is more valuable to the team. Look at today's game -- 4 Baby Jeebus RBIs, yet the team lost.
And those people would be idiots.
Unless the Twins are contending until the final week, Mauer has to finish really strong to win MVP. He has a lot of knocks against him in the eyes of the voters that include missing the first month, not playing for a contender, and I think how the pitching staff has fared also hurts his rep for helping a pitching staff.
If he can win the batting title and hit 30+ HRs with 100+ RBIs, it would be real hard for voters to pass on him. He's at 21 and 70, so he needs nine and 30 in the final six weeks. Not impossible, but a tall task. If he can get close in both then he has a shot.
Of course, if the Twins manage to get back above .500 and contend until the final week, I think he wins it easily barring injury or major slump.
Mauer not winning (again) will be a lot more palatable to me if Morneau doesn't steal it (again). Objectively speaking, there's going to be a fair number of people who will have a reasonable case, including probably four Rays (which will probably hurt all of them), and several players I subjectively dislike (Captain America, the Greek God of Walks, Chone Figgins(!)).
Ichiro just struck out to end the eighth and will most likely finish the game at 1-for-4. So, he's at .358 and Mauer is at .370. Mark Teixeira homered to get to 85 RBIs to tie Evan Longoria for second behind Morneau's 91.
