Before the game, Bert says:
"Scott Baker, maybe the best pitcher in the American League since June."
Dang
He was effusive about Baker earlier. I didn't hear anything about pitches being left up.
Coomer even said one of the keys to Baker's excellent pitching is being able to "elevate his fastball."
Dick says: "I have no intelligent basis for saying this..."
Me: You should put that before everything you say.
Thanks, sean!
With that walk, Delmon has reached the exclusive 10 walk plateau.
season or career?
Remember, he's only 24.
apparently, Gardy doesn't really like offense either.
but I'm sure Carmona will challenge his dislike again.
So, Morneau's injury allows Gardy to start all 5 outfielders (Kubel DH), but instead he opts for No Gomez and Buscher DH. It's not like Baker is a fly-ball pitcher who could benefit from OF defense.
I wonder if Grinderman could write a song "No Gomez Blues."
Yep. I did the math for it:
By using Span in CF and Kubel in RF versus Gomez in CF and Span in RF is roughly a -45 run difference. Buscher is roughly +10 runs over Gomez offensively, but over a season that's still ~3.5 wins lost because of this.
Posnanski loves it.
Evening, gents. Just finished making dinner - Philly cheese steak sandwiches, chips, and Diet Dr. Pepper. It's a cheat meal night. :)
chips, salsa, Sierra Nevada Kellerweis, leftovers.
I'm thinking about making mac & cheese. That or leftover red beans and rice.
Grilled porkchops, squash, mom's potato salad.
what kind of squash?
It's kind of sad that we no longer have to fear Pronk anymore. I mean, it's good for the Twins. But I hate to see it happen so young.
Yea. I liked being scared by Pronk. Kinda like going to a slasher flick -- you know that there's gonna be bloody mayhem, but you can't help yourself.
Yeah, felt the same way about Thome. Only did one thing well, didn't do it incredibly often, but often enough that you had to worry every time they were batting.
Baker == ground ball pitcher!!
Has to be! Can't trust the outfield.
Anybody have a good reason why they don't call up Valencia and see what he can do before having to evaluate him in Spring Training?
It's not like 3B isn't a giant hole right now...
Well, Tolbert got two hits yesterday. He battles his tail off.
Service time.
I thought expanded-roster time (Sept Callups) didn't start their clock.
Had to double check, and it appears it does count (so says the Reds' GM at least). Also, Valencia isn't on the 40-man roster so they would need to clear space for him *cough*Morneau*cough*.
I read Gardy saying something about "lack of Major League experience"
as far as I know, there's only one way to acquire that
unless you're Corbin Bernsen
So I got to see The Girl play volleyball today. Rally scoring (every serve leads to a point), which makes for awfully fast matches.
the girl went 1-2 on serves and had one successful dig, which put her on the leaderboard. Her team won the first game and the first six were done. The second six lost the second game; the third six lost the third. All over in about 20 minutes.
My three brothers and I all played on school sports teams from the time we could start playing on school sports teams, but only my sister, who only played volleyball for two years, played on a state championship team.
your typical 4-6-3 putout
This is the fourth series in the past month in which the Tim Tschida - Jeff Nelson crew has worked at the Dome. Pretty nice of MLB to be so compassionate with Nelson's mother in the hospital.
Kudos for them for getting something right for a change.
DnB saying that Wedge should get the job next year. I hope they're speaking as Twins fans. If he were my team's manager, I'd be looking forward to the day he's fired. Maybe with a bottle of champagne in storage for the event.
When I was in Cleveland last summer, fans already had their pitchforks out. Mark Shapiro took a Q and A at the SABR convention and had to sit there for about 20 minutes as a parade of Indians fans ripped Wedge to shreds. I'm shocked he's still around.
O-Cab's been pretty bad since joining the Twins
Since joining the Twins? That's generous of you, sir.
checking b-r, you're right.
he's had an OPS+ north of 100 once, 105 in 2003.
and it's not because of a lack of power, his OBP has never been above .347
As SBG often notes, he's an out making machine.
But that's not to say he hasn't served a purpose. He was a relatively inexpensive public relations move to keep Mauer happy, and he was a definite offensive upgrade over Punto.
But, really, does an out making machine help keep Joe happy?
Well, having a near-guaranteed out before Mauer sure makes Mauer look like a megastar. He casually gets on base directly after another guy makes it look like the single hardest thing in the universe.
Thanks for covering my six, Spooky. ;)
Well, after looking at the numbers, he's not that much of an offensive upgrade, especially since he's filled the two spot ahead of the M&M boys.
evening, folks.
Atkins Man.
that pansy Mauer walking, again.
WITH MORNO OUT, HE KNEEDS OT SHOW SOME LEDERSHP! SWING THE FAKING BAT!!!!
Dick and Bert talking about the possibility of Pujols winning the triple crown this year. I would really enjoy seeing that. I was 9 when Yaz won his.
It would be nice to see, but I don't see him passing Hanley. Hanley has a .360 average versus .329 for Pujols.
Cuddy Special.
On The Cutting Board: Sushi, seaweed salad, tempura roll and spicy california roll, and dessert.
dick rally sounds down about the last 7 Aflac questions in the dome.
heh heh. He said "dick rally".
plane has landed, Omaha is in the rearview mirror, the Twins have an early lead, and Dazzle's voice helps me concentrate on completing my expense report. Good to be home again.
Oh, and On the "Grill": 2 breakfast bars, 2 bags o' honey roasted peanuts, and a ginger ale -- an airline supper
okay, I'll take the blame for that run
"expense report" + "airline supper" does not compute.
Agreed. The time of my return flight doesn't allow for me to expense the evening meal.
So, when did dick 'n bert get on the Scott Baker's a good pitcher bandwagon?
When he stopped leaving his pitches up. And looking at the bullpen.
so, are they ripping on him now?
I'm sure it's not in-game related. He probably tapped Bert on the shoulder earlier today to wish him a happy birthday six and a half months early.
Morelas would have got that one, Joe's a punk.
Keppel warming in the pen? Why does Gardy feel this is a low leverage situation?

hey, I don't know if the boss has a theme for tomorrow's movie discussion, but I wanted to throw out a few of my favorite character/supporting actors as a discussion point...
Cool. You ever been bit by a dead bee?

I know where you stand and what your sympathies are. It's alright for you, but I don't want any part of it. They catch me fooling around with you fellas and my goose will be cooked. Probably lose my boat too. I ain't that interested.
+ 1 "Hee HEE"
Eli Wallach! Brad Dourif!!!
Was Dourif creepier in LOTR or Dune? A question for the ages.
Playing Piter should give anyone +10 creepy points.
Still, not as creepy as Sting in a leotard.
tru dat.
Dourif was nominated for an Oscar for a role in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I did not know that he was that old. (I've never seen the film).
But his greatest triumph has to have been playing Chucky (even though he looks nothing like Jon Gruden.
Wait, you've never seen one flew? That shocks me, doc.
He was pretty awesome in Cuckoo's Nest. But so were Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, and that Nicholson guy.
"And introducing" Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd. Quite the one-two punch there.
Del, that wasn't a good AB.
meat, that wasn't atypical.
I know, I just want him to know.
I'm not sure Delmon reads
this blog.KC up 11-1 on Detroit. We have to win this game tonight, I'm tired of treading water.
Jeremy Washburn got knocked around tonight. I guess that means he'll be well rested when he faces the Twins this weekend.
No matter what Washburn does against the Twins, it's better than what he would do with the Twins. We dodged the Washburn bullet, but got hit once or twice by the ricochet.
That
buntFC really tied this inning together.D'nB agree.
Yep, nothing like forcing a weak hitter to swing at a bad pitch. That nearly always pays off.
folks, we have a rally
way to spook it, Rhu_Ru.
Shut up, Brian. Stop distracting me, too...I predict the Twins are gonna pull within one here.
Waitaminnit, it's not as though Rhu_Ru said he "totally called that rally in his head"!!!!
Fan of the game is a little slow.
Didn't the sign say "Circle You, Bert?"
"Uh, I believe that's bert...." /mouthbreathing
Almost Famous.
O-Cabulous!
Knowledge of winning!!!
That was a whale of a shot!
ORRRRRCCCCCCAAAAAAA?????????!!!!!!!!!!!
I predict an 0-Cab homer!1!1111!!!
FOUR MORE YEARS!!!!
Tie game! OCab shuts my mouth.
I swear I was gunna call that.
OCab!
lets try again

The original "speechless" post was fine, too.
OrCa with a shot!
again, Mauer bats with the bases empty.
See, the HR was a rally killer.
Empirical, Doc.
I guess if you go back-to-back you might as well just forfeit and go home.
Well, Dick, I'm pretty sure that after Joe's done wearing number 7 nobody else will get a chance to wear it in a Twins uni again.
Is Punto like the recording secretary for mound conferences or something?
Secretary...hrm, I think he's just lonely.
+1 cabbage head.
That reminds me of what Bob Gibson once said to Tim McCarver when he went out to the mound. "The only thing you know about pitching is that it is hard to hit." Punto is in the same position.
Damn, I loved Bob Gibson when I was a kid.
Bring on Neck Tattoo!
That's some damn good relief work, Lou.
Neck Tat.
Neck Tatoo!
Delmon with extra-base power!
Extreme placement!
Due.
Heh, delmon with the gift double.
meatgristle of the order up.gristle of the order up.
So, the good stuff.
And when there was no meat, we would eat fowl.
And when there was no fowl, we would eat crawdads.
And when there was no crawdads, we would eat sand.
Would have seemed to be a good place for a bunt, but what do I know.
Give that man a cold one!
Untie game!
Tolbert, doing the little things.
dazz: "That's as good as a bunt right there."
Me: so we score more runs this inning?
My word Buscher is a lucky dolt
Buscher says FU to Ullger. Can't really blame the guy, but damn did he get lucky.
Yes.
TwinsIndians' baseball!and the key to the inning....
Brawl at Yankee Stadium!?!one? I thought heros played in NYC, for shame.
Huh? The new season doesn't start until Monday, meat!

5 game suspensions for all of them. Beginning on October 4.
If only justice was that swift.
w00t! More Neck Tattoo!
another inning would be a tall order.
I don't know, there's something Abbey Normal about that guy.

<3 mijares.
I balls him too.
Muscular Man.
Wow. That kid is pretty good at baseball.
Mauer is on
that girl who got Mauer's double was subconsciously stroking her ring finger
Mauer, against the Indians this year prior to this game:
.438/.515/.652

Off to get beer. Do any of you other snobs know of Deschutes? Small sample size of just one of their beers, but I'm pretty sure they're awesome. They also have a drink called "Arrogant Bastard," with which I'll need to pose for a photo.
Arrogant Bastard is a Stone brew. But yeah, it does kick a lot of ass. Never heard of Deschutes, though.
Arrogant Bastard is a pretty good amber. Not Dead Guy good, but good.
Deschutes makes Mirror Pond (a respectable Pale), a nice Porter, a pretty good winter ale, and assorted other stuff. An excellent brewery.
They do Mirror Pond? Wow, yeah, I've had that. I had no idea it was theirs, that's all.
Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter, Inversion IPA (meh), Obsidian Stout (v. nice), Bachelor ESB and a couple others year-round, plus Jubelale, and a fabulous Reserve Series.
All their stuff was on sale for 5.99 today, and every one of them were out except Great Lakes Organic Ale, where I was able to grab the last sixer. It's excellent, hoppy, bitey. After drinking junk too often lately, it's really hitting the spot (admittedly, I asked for opinions because I was afraid it was benefitting from poor recent competition).
Come on, Spooky, you could at least challenge us a little with the straight lines.
Black butte porter is really, really good.
Man, Cuddyer has some of the worst swings of a good hitter EVER
He does tend to bite on the slider low and away. Delmonesque of him.
oh hey, Magglio Ordonez's 18 mil option for next year vested today
Is there enough money left in the city of Detroit to even consider that an option?
productive out!
Start printing the 2010 playoff tickets now.
Really? Mijares was only good for one out?
Peralta is a terrifying righty. He's batting fourth!
Oh, plus a few other righties too I guess. Not entirely paying attention apparently.
I just went to look at his splits. And what was the first split displayed? Why, yes, the split EVERYONE wants to see: his line in New Yanqui Stadium.
anyway, his career split against righties: .246/306/385. Not too shabby.
Nice cheese tonight.
I just polished off a great Planter's nut mix - almonds, cashews, and macadamias.
Solid hit
byon Buscher. It's a new feeling, not being sure going into the 9th inning.
Punto should have slid.
walk DSPAN2 to get OrCa?
I hope Joe doesn't give me a stress reaction tonight. Because that is a real injury, you know.
out-cab in the field.
Gameday did not agree with ball one.
grrrr
Wieters With Power.
Jesus, joe.
Lovely. Stress reaction time.
This is so right. Soooo right. I get back from the beer run, and the first thing I see is the home run swing.
I suck. I suck so hard.
Only if you called it in your head, Spooky. Only then.
Heh. I didn't even have time! Eyes on the screen, swing. Instantaneous. I didn't even know if there were baserunners, so that was worse still.
Golf balls through a garden hose, Spooky.
Obligatory baserunners are more fun than obligatory runs.
Could be worse. We could have Fuentes. Or
F-K-Rod.That crazy drunk is our Rally Monkey, thunderstix and cowbell all mixed into one!
This Tschida crew is Feeling Minnesota
she should sue for molestation.
Nice job by the director to keep taking the shot of the obnoxious drunk guy.
Reality bites.
Nice save, Twitchy. Now never f*&^in' do it again.
Delmon puts it away!
Twins Win!
Sure, now you chime in. Where you been all night, Vincent?
Played a set of tennis with my pal TILT earlier this evening. (Good lord, the mind tells me where I should position myself for a shot--the legs apparently didn't get the memo...) Watched innings 3-7 at some horrible suburban bar after the sad display of tennis.
Beer snob alert: I enjoyed a couple of Peroni on tap. You got a problem with that?
ahh, good to see the bouncy canines again.
White Flags game is on WGN. And I'm going to watch the rest of it. Why? Because, there's only one September.
Crazy like a FOX.
Thanks for the tip.
Pregnant wife was tired, went to bed early. West coast baseball for AMR!
what the hell?!? i have a late business dinner, and i come home to see the twins win on an o-cab home run, and buscher and punto rbis? did someone clip my driver side door on the way home?
.500's in the rear-view!
Twins are the closest second-place team in the AL!
Someone's got to overtake someone, right? There haven't been any lead changes in ages.
Right. I thought it might be the Texas, but just like the Twins and ChiSox and Rays, they got close enough to make the lead team worry, and then faded. Only the Twins* faded first, so they have more time for a rebound.
*And ChiSox. Twins fans need the ChiSox to stay in this enough so that they whoop the Tigs for games against them.
Jon Rauch with 4 decisions already. He was awarded the win tonight and is now 3-1
just award win the Cy Young now.
