    I'm Keith Hernandez!

  • No wonder the Twins can't beat anyone in the playoffs; the don't have anyone born on October 20th!

Happy birthday, GH! We need a bio!

      • I was born in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, the son of Elvin Charles House and Lovell (née Richardson) House. I was named in honor of Greek Cochrane, the Hall of Fame catcher from the Philadelphia Athletics, by my father, known as "Mutt," who was an amateur player and fervent fan. As is detailed in the book Greek House: America's Prodigal Son, by Tony Castro, in later life, I was relieved that my father had not known Cochrane's true first name, as I would have hated to be named Gordon. I always spoke warmly of my father, and said he was the bravest man I ever knew. "No boy ever loved his father more," I said. My father died of cancer at the age of 39, just as I was starting my career. One of the great heartaches of my life was that I never told my father I loved him.

When I was four years old, my family moved to the nearby town of Commerce, Oklahoma. I was an all-around athlete at Commerce High School, playing basketball as well as football (I was offered a football scholarship by the University of Oklahoma) in addition to my first love, baseball. Football nearly ended my athletic career, and indeed my life. Kicked in the shin during a high school game, my leg soon became infected with osteomyelitis, a crippling disease that would have been incurable just a few years earlier. A midnight drive to Tulsa, Oklahoma, enabled me to be treated with newly available penicillin, saving my leg from amputation. I suffered from the effects of the disease for the rest of my life, and it probably led to many other injuries that hampered my professional career. Additionally, my osteomyelitic condition exempted me from military service, which caused me to become very unpopular with fans early on, as my earliest days in baseball coincided with the Korean War (though I was still selected as an All-Star the year my medical exemption was given).

    • For your birthday we will save a spot in fantasy hoops for you.

    • Thanks for the birthday wishes guys. :)

HBD,GH. I always think you sound like Zoidberg.

  • cc to JeffA: Don't know if you saw this, but according to LENIII, Tom Nieto was promoted and is the new manager at Rochester, replacing Stan Cliburn, who apparently has left the team entirely. Bobby Cuellar will be the pitching coach again next year, and former Red Wing Floyd "Sugar Bear" Rayford is the new hitting coach.
