The next door neighbors back in SBGville had seven kids, five of them boys, four of them older than me. The fourth boy had a red Ford Maverick that we thought was extremely cool. Considering that he was only 16, it was pretty cool. He had a cool car stereo. We used to sit in his car, hoping that Heart's Barracuda would come on the radio. That was absolutely the song back then. You want to talk girl bands? The mid seventies Heart kicks them all to Hell. Unfortunately, the eighties came along and the $ell out was incredibly depressing. And who the hell ordered the eleventy billion dozen doughnuts? I digress.
I tried to find a video of Heart doing Barracuda from back in the day. No luck. I'm not going to show Ann at 3 large. So, how about a little Magic Man from The Midnight Special?
By the way, my neighbor totaled out that Maverick by running it into a parked car. Bummer. Okay, how about Nancy playing acoustic on another tune from TMS, Crazy on You?
Drop your lists.

The one year I was in marching band in HS, we played "Crazy on You". No one, and I mean no one, had ever heard of either the song or the band Heart before that.
I heard a band in one of Runner Daughter's competitions do a performance that included the instrumental break from Steely Dan's "Aja" Love that bridge, but again, I wonder how many in the band knew about the song before?
It strikes me that the songs high school marching/pep bands play tend to have a strong correlation to the songs that were popular when the band director was growing up.
And more importantly, they were popular when the competition judges were growing up ;)
Are there no classic rock stations in your town?
Now that just flat out hurts! But, as I told E-6 this week, I admit it, I'm a greybeard and I embrace my old age.
Are there no classic rock stations in your town?
I'll answer for Andrew here - "No"
What the heck is classic rock? You mean like Creed?
no, no, classic rock. you know, like REM.
Yeah, FTLT was meaning Oldies station
no, no, classic rock. you know, like REM.
ROFL
Now that's just mean!
I just listened to a great classic rock album.
The Joshua Tree
Are you trying to make some of us feel old(er), Milt??
I'm so old that I remember when U2 wasn't a behemoth and the fact that I was into them was impressive to a certain class of girls. You know, the girls that didn't think that Slippery When Wet was the greatest thing, EVAH!
I'm so old that I saw U2 at a half-full First Avenue. They had so little material, they had to play "I Will Follow" 3 times.
Bono probably didn't even own a pair of sunglasses at that point.
I so old I saw U2 and RFK stadium and it only cost $15.00
surely, RFK cost more than $15 to build!
To Algonad, was Mr. Aboud the band director when you attended this fine institution?
Yes he was.
His son is in my brother's class. They're juniors.
That means he wasn't born until after I'd graduated high school.

* I was at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. when this concert was recorded on July 19, 1986. Most memorable part was the outstanding series of acoustic and electric guitar solos and duets performed by Steve Hackett and Steve Howe to open the concert. And I know who the cheer came from when "Pennants" was announced.
"Any Colour You Like" - Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon
plouffe!
Trippiest song on the album, and possibly the best headphone music of all time. I just realized I've had DSOTM on vinyl, 8-track, cassette (twice), and CD (twice), and I've now ripped it to an MP3 file that sits on my hard drive and my MP3 player. I don't care what the DMCA says, I don't really feel obligated to ever pay for it again.
agreed. that being said, i'm still scratching my head as to how that can be a "walk-up song".

Lots of songs used in commercials this week.
I can never decide if "Then He Kissed Me" or "Da Doo Ron Ron" is my favourite Phil Spector single. Hearing either one in the morning is a great way to start the day.
"Be My Baby". Hands down.
Good one. All released within about 4 months of each other in 1963.
I don't know - I like them all... they're a veritable wall of sound.
Agreed. Spector is killer.
+a life term
Then he kissed me from Goodfellas

Scorsese was just repeating himself! He'd already tapped the Wall of Sound ("Be My Baby") to score a sequence (the opening, as I recall) of Mean Streets.

Back to back Neko. That deserves a picture.
Oh come on 6, I bet you could have found a better one than that...
I would listen to Neko Case sing the phone book.
For a few minutes at least...
I could listed to Neko Case pretend to have an Australian accent.
For a few minutes at least...
beat that.
I would listen to Neko Case whisper in my ear that she wanted to sing for me, and not any songs.
Beat that!

Hey, that Sonic Youth song is from this decade!
Heh. My one song from the Oughties is by a bunch of 40-year-olds. :)

Great list, dw. Love that Fastball CD, but I played it so many times when it was new that I got tired of it. Now I have to dig it out again for another listen.
I was debating with a friend the better two hit wonder band, Blues Traveler or Fastball.
I thought Fastball had three hits... The Way, Out of My Head, Fire Escape.
you are correct. they had 3 hits off that album.
I forgot I owned that album until a few weeks back when I was digging around in some boxes looking for my Strat-O-Matic game
I never listened to the whole album until a few days ago. Decent pop/rock album. I would give it 3-3 1/2 stars out of 5
I'll have my list shortly but I am guessing everyone wants to see Weezer perform in Weezer Snuggies (Wuggies) so here you go.
Kenny Gorelick!
just to tie this back into the WGOM ethos, The Repository sez:

No.

Well geez, thanks for crushing my hopes of fitting in around here.
Might I suggest growing a beard and drinking/brewing beer. And traveling to Buffalo.
Hey, wait, I do all those things!
Then we'll let the dearth of girl bands slide.
A Hold Steady album or two wouldn't hurt. Or maybe The Replacements.

Get Leviathan or Crack the Skye first. I haven't really found a good foothold to appreciate Blood Mountain yet.
'Blood and Thunder' is my favorite song of theirs (off Leviathan).
I'll second Leviathan (mostly because I haven't heard Crack the Skye.
Also, avoid seeing interviews with the band. At all costs.

nicely done, sir. i think you're one of the only other people here with liz phair on their lists.
Second week in a row I had a Liz Phair song.
Ah, Liz Phair... used to be hot and awesome. At least she's still hot.
Remind me at a SBG caucus to relay the story of when I met Liz Phair before she was famous and just another chick who hung out with Urge Overkill.
My college roommate went to high school with her.
Ah, Liz Phair... used to be hot and awesome. At least she's still hot.

No doubt, the SJU Men's chorus version of Loch Lomond gets me every time.
This version is okay, but the 2006 in concert addition (featuring a certain extraordinarily talented bartitone) is better.
New ipod, or did it get stuck on Flogging Molly? :-)
It got stuck. It's only an 8 GB and I have 4 Flogging Molly albums, so there'll be days like this.
I know what you mean. I've ditched my iPod for convenience. My phone is now my music player and it too is only 8 GB, but Pandora streaming makes it tolerable.
"Save Tonight" came on when I was at Best Buy last weekend. I started singing along, my brother (17) had never heard it before in his life.
its a good song
That song is 12 years old now. That makes me feel extremely old.
Wow. Now I too feel old.
*counts on fingers* dear god!
I found the promo single at cheapo for $0.99. I said, Neneh's Brother! Don's Son! This'll be awesome.
My girlfriend (now wife) loved it and had me play it over and over and I got kindof sick of it.
Then, about 3 months later, it start getting radio play and I'm really sick of it. And then it hits the top 5 and I'm so bloody sick of this song. I can't even remember if I ever liked it.
Neneh's Brother!
Huh? Sucka!

1. Arcade Fire - My Body is a Cage - Neon Bible
I think I've mentioned it before, but @ 2:09 in that song is one of my favorite things. Ever.
i 100% percent agree with you. i tried to show my wife teh awesomeness that is the moment, and she just told me to turn it down :(
My wife generally does the same thing whenever I play anything for her. I played 'Reckoner' by Radiohead for her, and she just cocked her head and said "what is this crap?"
*sigh*
One-hundred percent agreed.
Also, because i'm so ridiculously anal about such things, that moment placed #22 on the Top 50 Musical Moments, Ever list I made recently.
I sure hope Ashlee Simpson is on that list!
I had the distinct pleasure of seeing that "Live".

What a fantastic song.
i didn't go through the tom waits catalog in any particular order, and that album was one of the most recent ones i got into. blew my freakin' mind.
I have no list. I'm just listening to Arcade Fire. Just finished Funeral.
Always a good decision. Always.

Somehow, 'You Can Make Him Like You' didn't really do anything for me on the first 50 or so listens to Boys and Girls in America. Now it's one of my favorite songs of theirs.
I really like it too. It's just so sarcastic.
Man, I still remember hearing "More Than a Feeling" when it debuted on the radio; probably along with "Bohemian Rhapsody" the biggest impacting debut single of the mid-late 70's.
Yeah, except for the fact that Queen had already released 4 or 5 singles before that.
From the Repository:
Bohemian Rhapsody was on their fourth album.
Ha! Out in the sticks where we were, the Beatles' debut single was coming out about then, too!
Their 3rd album, Sheer Heart Attack featured the single "Killer Queen" which rose to #11 on the US charts.
"Killer Queen" preceeded "Bohemian Rhapsody" (singles-wise)? d'er, how about that; the mind IS the first go.

I think many of you here would like Micah P. Hinson. It's really, really good singer/songwriter stuff. I'd definitely recommend it to all the Wilco fans.
I've got Micah's first record. The closing cut is the epic "The Day That Texas Sank to the Bottom of the Sea." How is that Girls record? It's getting massive buzz. And that Wrens LP is sweet, too.
The Girls are playing the Entry on Saturday.
I saw that. I was trying to convince a couple of people to go. I've been unsuccessful.
Would it be bad form to blow off dinner with my mom? (She's in town this weekend.)
You could go together!
We don't have a sitter. Maybe you and your mom could take my kids. Win/win!
You know, as sweet as your kids seem and as much as I
likelove my 83-y/o mom, I'd sooner slide down a razor blade banister into a pool of lemon juice than attempt that scenario. That sounds reasonable. But if you miss out on pink eye this flu season, you can't say I didn't make the effort.
I'd go if I was in the Cities this weekend. But alas, I'm in Fargo. Sad trombone.
